What Burden Has God Placed on Your Heart?

Theme Verse

“And when He saw the multitudes, He was moved with compassion on them, because they fainted, and were scattered abroad, as sheep having no shepherd.”— Matthew 9:36 (KJV)

🌅 Good Morning & Happy Monday!

A brand-new week is here.

New opportunities.

New people to encourage.

New prayers to pray.

And perhaps... a new step toward discovering the calling God has placed upon your life.

Yesterday we asked:

“What has God already put in my hands?”

Today we're going to ask another important question:

“What has God placed on my heart?”

What breaks your heart?

What need do you notice that others seem to walk past?

What situation causes you to think:

“Someone needs to do something about this.”

Sometimes that “someone” may be you.

Not every burden is a calling, but throughout Scripture we repeatedly see God using compassion to move His people toward action.

Sometimes your calling begins with something you simply cannot ignore.

đź“– Today's Scripture Reading

  • Matthew 9:35–38

  • Nehemiah 1:1–11

  • Esther 4:13–16

  • Luke 10:30–37

  • Galatians 6:2

  • James 2:14–17

✝️ Bible Study

When Jesus looked upon the multitudes, Scripture tells us something beautiful.

He was moved with compassion.

Jesus didn't simply notice their condition.

His heart was moved by it.

There is a difference between seeing a need and feeling compelled to respond to one.

That same pattern appears throughout Scripture.

🌿 Nehemiah Heard—and His Heart Broke

Nehemiah wasn't living in Jerusalem when he learned that the walls were broken down.

He could have said:

“That's terrible.”

Then continued with his life.

But he didn't.

Scripture says:

“I sat down and wept, and mourned certain days, and fasted, and prayed before the God of heaven.”— Nehemiah 1:4 (KJV)

Something happened inside Nehemiah.

The broken walls became a burden on his heart.

That burden led him to prayer.

Prayer led him to action.

Action led him into leadership.

And leadership led to restoration.

What began as heartbreak became part of Nehemiah's assignment.

đź’ś What Keeps Tugging at Your Heart?

Perhaps you have a special compassion for:

Children who need guidance.

Families struggling financially.

People battling loneliness.

Those experiencing grief.

The elderly who feel forgotten.

Young people searching for direction.

Single parents.

People recovering from addiction.

Those who don't know Jesus.

Families needing food.

People experiencing homelessness.

Prisoners.

Veterans.

Widows.

People with disabilities.

Broken marriages.

Or believers who desperately need encouragement.

Pay attention to what repeatedly moves your heart.

God may be showing you something.

🌻 Compassion Is Different From Recognition

Sometimes we mistakenly believe a calling must come with a title.

Pastor.

Missionary.

Teacher.

Minister.

Leader.

But God isn't impressed by titles.

He's interested in obedience.

You don't need a title to visit someone who's lonely.

You don't need a microphone to tell someone about Jesus.

You don't need a ministry building to pray with someone who's hurting.

You don't need thousands of followers to encourage one discouraged person.

And you don't need everyone's approval before obeying God.

Sometimes ministry begins with simply noticing the person everyone else overlooked.

✝️ Esther Had a Choice

Esther discovered that her position wasn't merely about privilege.

It came with responsibility.

Mordecai reminded her:

“And who knoweth whether thou art come to the kingdom for such a time as this?”— Esther 4:14 (KJV)

Esther could remain comfortable...

Or she could use where God had placed her to help others.

She chose courage.

And an entire people were impacted.

Perhaps God has placed you exactly where you are because someone there needs what He has placed inside you.

Your workplace can be a mission field.

Your neighborhood can be a mission field.

Your business can be a mission field.

Your kitchen table can be a mission field.

Your social media page can be a mission field.

Wherever God has placed you, there are people who need to see the love of Jesus.

⚠️ A Burden Must Lead Us Toward God

There is an important distinction we should remember.

Not every frustration is a calling.

Something irritating us doesn't necessarily mean God assigned us to fix it.

A God-given burden should draw us toward:

Prayer.

Compassion.

Scripture.

Service.

Love.

Obedience.

Nehemiah didn't immediately start criticizing everyone who had failed to rebuild Jerusalem.

He prayed.

Before you run toward something simply because it moves you emotionally, bring it before God.

Ask:

“Lord, is this something You are calling me to do something about?”

Then listen.

đź’ś Reflection Questions

Take some time with these today:

  • What need consistently touches my heart?

  • Who do I naturally feel compassion toward?

  • What problem do I find myself praying about repeatedly?

  • What injustice or suffering is difficult for me to ignore?

  • Have my life experiences prepared me to help someone facing something similar?

  • Is there a need right in front of me that I've been waiting for someone else to address?

  • What could one small act of obedience look like?

🙏 Today's Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for giving us hearts capable of compassion.

Help me see people the way Jesus sees them.

Open my eyes to those who feel forgotten.

Help me notice the hurting person, the lonely person, the grieving person, the discouraged person, and the person who desperately needs hope.

Lord, reveal the burdens You have placed upon my heart.

Give me wisdom to know the difference between my emotions and Your direction.

If You are calling me to serve somewhere, make the path clear.

If You are asking me to speak, give me courage.

If You are asking me to listen, give me patience.

If You are asking me to give, make me generous.

If You are asking me to go, help me obey.

And if You are asking me simply to pray, teach me to pray faithfully.

Use my hands.

Use my voice.

Use my testimony.

Use my experiences.

Use my life.

May everything I do point someone toward Jesus.

In His precious name,

Amen.

🌼 Today's Calling Challenge

Open your journal and write:

WHAT BREAKS MY HEART?

Don't overthink it.

Write down three needs, groups of people, or situations that consistently move you.

Then beside each one, answer:

Why does this matter so much to me?

Has something in my own life connected me to this need?

What could I realistically do to help?

Finally, circle the one that weighs most heavily on your heart.

Pray over it this week.

Don't immediately create a huge plan.

Simply ask:

“Lord, what is my next step?”

🌟 Today's Encouragement

You don't have to solve the entire problem to make a difference.

Nehemiah couldn't rebuild Jerusalem in one day.

Esther couldn't save her people without taking one courageous step.

The Good Samaritan couldn't heal every hurting traveler.

But each responded to the need God placed before them.

Maybe you can't feed every hungry person.

Feed one.

Maybe you can't comfort everyone who is grieving.

Comfort one.

Maybe you can't reach the entire world.

Tell one person about Jesus.

Maybe you can't change everything.

But with God's help, you can change something.

“Bear ye one another's burdens, and so fulfil the law of Christ.”— Galatians 6:2 (KJV)

🌿 Monday Reminder

Don't begin this week asking only:

“What do I need to accomplish?”

Ask:

“Lord, who can I serve?”

Someone may cross your path this week who has been praying for exactly the encouragement, wisdom, kindness, or help God has equipped you to give.

Don't be so busy looking for your “big calling” that you miss today's divine appointment.

🌻 Closing Thought

Your calling may be hiding inside the thing that repeatedly breaks your heart. Pay attention to what moves you toward compassion, prayer, and action. God may use the very experiences that once brought tears to your eyes to help you wipe the tears from someone else's.

Don't worry about changing the whole world today.

Just ask:

“Lord, show me the person You want me to love, the need You want me to notice, and the step You want me to take.”

Then be willing to obey.

Your calling isn't only about what God wants you to do. It's about who He wants to love through you.

Have a beautiful and purpose-filled Monday! ✝️💜
