GUARD YOUR HEART

Not Everything Deserves Access

đź“– Theme Verse

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”— Proverbs 4:23 (KJV)

🌅 GOOD MORNING & HAPPY TUESDAY!

Yesterday we began studying the Breastplate of Righteousness.

Think about where a breastplate sits.

RIGHT OVER THE HEART. ❤️

That makes today's lesson especially important.

Proverbs tells us:

“KEEP THY HEART WITH ALL DILIGENCE.”

In other words:

GUARD IT.

But guarding your heart doesn't mean becoming cold.

It doesn't mean refusing to love.

It doesn't mean never trusting anyone again because somebody hurt you.

It doesn't mean building such high walls that nobody can get close.

Biblically guarding our hearts means being careful about what we allow to:

Influence us.

Take root in us.

Control us.

Shape our decisions.

And pull us away from God.

Because here's something we need to remember:

NOT EVERYTHING DESERVES ACCESS TO YOUR HEART.

đź“– TODAY'S SCRIPTURE READING

Proverbs 4:20–27Psalm 51:10–12Psalm 139:23–24Matthew 6:19–24Matthew 15:10–20Philippians 4:6–9Colossians 3:12–17Ephesians 6:10–18

❤️ YOUR HEART INFLUENCES YOUR LIFE

Proverbs 4:23 says:

“…for out of it are the issues of life.”

What lives inside eventually affects what comes outside.

Jesus said in Matthew 15:18:

“But those things which proceed out of the mouth come forth from the heart...”

Our heart influences:

Our words.

Our reactions.

Our relationships.

Our priorities.

Our decisions.

Our attitudes.

Our desires.

That's why God isn't interested only in changing our outward behavior.

HE WANTS OUR HEARTS.

We can learn how to look right on the outside while something very different is growing inside.

God sees deeper.

🛡️ GUARDING YOUR HEART ISN'T THE SAME AS HARDENING YOUR HEART

There is an important difference between a guarded heart and a hardened heart.

A guarded heart says:

“I WILL USE GODLY WISDOM.”

A hardened heart says:

“I WILL NEVER LET ANYONE CLOSE AGAIN.”

A guarded heart can forgive while establishing healthy boundaries.

A hardened heart refuses forgiveness.

A guarded heart learns from hurt.

A hardened heart allows hurt to become bitterness.

A guarded heart still loves.

A hardened heart becomes suspicious of everyone.

Jesus doesn't call us to become cold because someone hurt us.

WE CAN HAVE BOUNDARIES WITHOUT LOSING OUR LOVE.

đź’ś BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU ALLOW TO TAKE ROOT

Hebrews 12:15 warns about a:

“…root of bitterness...”

Think about roots.

They usually grow where nobody can see them.

That's how bitterness can begin.

Someone hurts us.

We replay it.

Then replay it again.

Then tell the story again.

Then imagine what we should have said.

Then resentment grows.

Before long, something that happened to us has started changing us.

Friend, someone may have genuinely wronged you.

Guarding your heart doesn't mean pretending it didn't hurt.

But it does mean refusing to allow their actions to plant something inside you that God never intended to grow there.

DON'T LET SOMEONE ELSE'S WRONG BECOME A ROOT OF BITTERNESS IN YOU.

🌿 FORGIVENESS DOESN'T ALWAYS MEAN ACCESS

This is important.

Sometimes Christians hear:

“YOU HAVE TO FORGIVE.”

And assume that means they must immediately give someone the same access they had before.

Forgiveness and trust are not identical.

You can forgive someone and still recognize that trust needs rebuilding.

You can forgive and establish boundaries.

You can forgive and say:

“I LOVE YOU, BUT THIS BEHAVIOR CANNOT CONTINUE.”

You can forgive without pretending something harmful was acceptable.

Romans 12:18 says:

“If it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.”

Notice:

“IF IT BE POSSIBLE.”

We should pursue peace.

But biblical peace does not require us to continually place ourselves in unhealthy situations.

FORGIVENESS RELEASES BITTERNESS.

WISDOM DECIDES ACCESS.

📱 GUARD WHAT ENTERS YOUR HEART

Our hearts are influenced by what we repeatedly consume.

What are you watching?

What are you listening to?

What are you reading?

Whose voices are shaping you?

What fills your social-media feed?

What conversations do you continually participate in?

Philippians 4:8 tells us to think upon things that are:

True.

Honest.

Just.

Pure.

Lovely.

Of good report.

That doesn't mean Christians have to hide from the real world.

It means we should pay attention to what we're continually feeding our hearts and minds.

If something constantly produces:

Anger.

Fear.

Lust.

Jealousy.

Comparison.

Bitterness.

Confusion.

Ask:

“WHY AM I GIVING THIS SO MUCH ACCESS TO ME?”

⚔️ THE ENEMY LOVES AN UNGUARDED HEART

Think back to our first week.

We learned that spiritual warfare often involves deception.

If the enemy can plant a lie in the heart and convince us to nurture it, that lie can influence our choices.

Maybe the lie says:

“NOBODY CARES ABOUT YOU.”

Then isolation grows.

Or:

“YOU HAVE EVERY RIGHT TO STAY BITTER.”

Then unforgiveness grows.

Or:

“YOU DESERVE THIS TEMPTATION.”

Then compromise grows.

Or:

“YOU'LL NEVER CHANGE.”

Then hopelessness grows.

This is why we need both pieces we've studied:

🛡️ THE BELT OF TRUTH

helps us identify the lie.

And:

❤️ THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS

helps protect the heart from allowing that lie to control how we live.

✝️ ASK GOD TO SEARCH YOUR HEART

Psalm 139:23–24 gives us a courageous prayer:

“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

That's a powerful prayer because it doesn't say:

“LORD, SHOW ME WHAT'S WRONG WITH EVERYBODY ELSE.”

It says:

“SEARCH ME.”

Lord—

Is there bitterness in me?

Jealousy?

Pride?

Unforgiveness?

A hidden sin?

A wrong motive?

An unhealthy attachment?

Something I've justified because nobody else knows?

SEARCH ME, GOD.

Sometimes protecting our hearts begins by allowing God to show us what has already gotten inside.

đź’ś GUARD YOUR HEART FROM COMPARISON

Comparison is another quiet thief.

We see somebody else's:

Marriage.

Home.

Career.

Ministry.

Body.

Vacation.

Children.

Success.

Possessions.

And suddenly the life God gave us doesn't seem good enough.

Social media can make this worse because we're often comparing our ordinary Tuesday with somebody else's carefully selected highlight.

Guard your heart.

Celebrate other people's blessings without believing their blessing diminishes yours.

SOMEONE ELSE'S HARVEST DOESN'T MEAN GOD FORGOT YOUR FIELD.

Be grateful for what God is doing in your life.

🌻 GUARD YOUR HEART WITHOUT CLOSING IT TO LOVE

Maybe you've been hurt.

Maybe deeply.

And you've said:

“I WILL NEVER LET THAT HAPPEN AGAIN.”

Be careful.

Wisdom is good.

Boundaries can be good.

But don't let one person's actions rob everyone else of the love God placed inside you.

Don't make a permanent decision from a painful season.

Ask God:

“LORD, SHOW ME THE DIFFERENCE BETWEEN WISDOM AND FEAR.”

Jesus knew betrayal.

He knew rejection.

He knew false accusations.

Yet He continued to love.

Our goal isn't to become untouchable.

OUR GOAL IS TO BECOME MORE LIKE CHRIST.

🙏 GIVE GOD THE THINGS YOU CANNOT FIX

Sometimes our hearts become overwhelmed because we're carrying things we were never meant to control.

Other people's decisions.

Tomorrow's possibilities.

Family problems.

Things that happened years ago.

Questions without answers.

Philippians 4:6–7 tells us to bring our requests to God, and then speaks of:

“…the peace of God, which passeth all understanding...”

And notice what that peace does:

“…shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.”

There it is again.

GOD GUARDING THE HEART.

You guard your heart partly by giving God what is too heavy for you to carry.

❤️ DON'T FORGET WHAT BELONGS INSIDE

Guarding your heart isn't only about keeping things out.

It's also about intentionally putting the right things in.

Fill your heart with:

đź“– God's Word.

🙏 Prayer.

đź’ś Gratitude.

🎶 Worship.

🌿 Forgiveness.

❤️ Compassion.

✝️ Jesus.

Colossians 3:16 says:

“Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly...”

Don't merely empty your heart of the wrong things.

FILL IT WITH THE RIGHT THINGS.

đź’ś TODAY'S REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  1. What currently has the greatest influence over my heart?

  2. Am I guarding my heart—or hardening it?

  3. Is there bitterness taking root inside me?

  4. Is there someone I need to forgive while still maintaining healthy boundaries?

  5. What am I repeatedly watching, reading, or listening to?

  6. Is comparison stealing my gratitude?

  7. Is there a lie influencing my decisions?

  8. What would I be afraid for God to reveal if I prayed, “Search me”?

  9. Am I carrying something today that I need to give back to God?

  10. What do I need more of in my heart?

🙏 TODAY'S PRAYER

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for another day.

Today I ask You to help me guard my heart.

Not with fear.

Not with bitterness.

Not with walls that keep everyone away.

But with Your wisdom.

Search me, Lord.

Show me anything that has taken root inside me that doesn't belong.

If there is bitterness—

remove it.

If there is jealousy—

remove it.

If there is pride—

remove it.

If there is unforgiveness—

help me release it.

If there is fear—

teach me to trust You.

If there is hidden sin—

give me courage to confess it.

Guard what enters my heart.

Give me wisdom about the voices I listen to, the things I watch, and the thoughts I entertain.

Help me establish healthy boundaries without becoming hard-hearted.

Fill me with Your Word.

Fill me with gratitude.

Fill me with compassion.

Fill me with Your peace.

And help me wear the Breastplate of Righteousness faithfully today.

In Jesus' precious name,

Amen.

🌼 TODAY'S ARMOR CHALLENGE

❤️🛡️ THE HEART INVENTORY

Take a quiet moment today and draw a large heart on a piece of paper.

Inside it, write the things currently occupying the most space in your heart.

Maybe:

Family.

Jesus.

Fear.

Work.

Grief.

Worry.

Anger.

Money.

Hope.

Bitterness.

Prayer.

Gratitude.

A relationship.

A problem.

Be honest.

Then ask:

“LORD, WHAT BELONGS HERE—AND WHAT NEEDS TO GO?”

Circle the things that draw you closer to God.

Place an X beside anything that is controlling your heart in an unhealthy way.

Then pray:

“CREATE IN ME A CLEAN HEART, O GOD.”

đź“– SCRIPTURE TO REMEMBER

“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”— Proverbs 4:23 (KJV)

And pray:

“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”— Psalm 51:10 (KJV)

🙏 RELEASE CHECK

What am I carrying that belongs in God's hands?

✝️ HEART CHECK

Does my heart look more like Jesus today than it did yesterday?

🌟 TODAY'S ENCOURAGEMENT

Friend, guarding your heart doesn't mean nobody will ever hurt you again.

Living in this world means we may experience disappointment.

Rejection.

Betrayal.

Loss.

Misunderstanding.

But someone else's actions do not have to determine what grows inside you.

YOU CAN BE HURT WITHOUT BECOMING HATEFUL.

YOU CAN BE DISAPPOINTED WITHOUT BECOMING BITTER.

YOU CAN SET A BOUNDARY WITHOUT STOPPING LOVE.

YOU CAN FORGIVE WITHOUT GIVING UNLIMITED ACCESS.

YOU CAN WALK THROUGH PAIN AND STILL BECOME MORE LIKE JESUS.

Guard your heart.

But keep it tender toward God.

🌻 CLOSING THOUGHT

Imagine standing at the door of your home.

You wouldn't allow everyone who knocked to walk inside and make themselves comfortable.

Some people belong inside.

Some may stay on the porch.

And some need to keep moving.

We need wisdom with our hearts too.

Not every opinion deserves access.

Not every criticism deserves a room.

Not every memory deserves to be replayed.

Not every temptation deserves consideration.

Not every offense deserves permanent residence.

Not every person deserves unlimited access.

But Jesus?

GIVE HIM THE WHOLE HOUSE.

Let His Word fill every room.

Let His peace guard the doors.

Let His truth expose what doesn't belong.

Let His righteousness protect your heart.

And today:

🛡️ FASTEN THE BELT OF TRUTH.

❤️ PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.

🙏 ASK GOD TO SEARCH YOUR HEART.

✝️ AND GIVE JESUS FULL ACCESS.

📖 TOMORROW — WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 16

We continue with the Breastplate of Righteousness:

🌿 LIVING DIFFERENTLY

When Grace Changes the Way We Live

“I beseech you therefore, brethren, by the mercies of God, that ye present your bodies a living sacrifice...”— Romans 12:1 (KJV)

Tomorrow we'll talk about something important:

If Jesus has changed our hearts, eventually that change should become visible in the way we live.

Not perfection.

Not pretending.

But transformation.

Until tomorrow:

Guard your heart.

Release bitterness.

Choose wisdom.

Fill your heart with God's Word.

Keep the Belt of Truth fastened.

And wear the Breastplate of Righteousness.

Have a beautifully blessed Tuesday! 💜❤️🛡️📖✝️
