“When You Have to Learn to Live With the Empty Chair”

📖 Today's Scripture — KJV

“The LORD is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul.”

— Psalm 23:1–3

🌿 Devotional Thought

Good morning, sweet friends.

As I sit here with my morning coffee, my heart is thinking about something that every grieving family eventually encounters.

The empty chair.

Sometimes it's a literal chair at the kitchen table.

Sometimes it's the empty seat in church.

The passenger seat in the car.

The place where someone always sat during family gatherings.

Or maybe it's not a chair at all.

Maybe it's the phone that no longer rings.

The bedroom that is too quiet.

The coffee cup nobody uses.

The birthday card you no longer get to send.

The person you wish you could call when something wonderful happens.

Grief has a way of making absence feel like a presence of its own.

And sometimes, even years later, we still look toward that empty place.

Friend, if that's you this morning, I want you to know that God sees the empty chair too.

He knows who used to sit there.

He knows how much you miss them.

And He knows how difficult it can be to keep living when part of your heart longs for yesterday.

đź’ś The Empty Chair Doesn't Mean Love Has Left the Room

There is something I have learned through grief.

The people we love leave behind more than an empty place.

They leave behind memories.

Lessons.

Laughter.

Recipes.

Photographs.

Traditions.

Stories.

And sometimes, the very best parts of who we are were shaped by the people we miss.

Maybe Momma taught you how to cook.

Maybe Daddy taught you how to work hard.

Maybe your spouse taught you what faithful love looks like.

Maybe your child taught you how deeply a heart can love.

Maybe a friend taught you how to laugh even during difficult seasons.

Those things don't disappear when someone dies.

Their physical presence may be gone, but the love they gave us continues shaping the lives we live.

And that love deserves to be carried forward.

🌷 God Is Not Asking You to Forget Who Sat There

Sometimes we feel pressure to move on.

People may say things like:

“You need to get back to normal.”

“It's time to move forward.”

“You can't keep living in the past.”

But what if the person you miss was part of what made your life beautiful?

What if their presence helped make your house feel like home?

What if their laughter was part of every family gathering?

Of course you miss them.

Of course certain days hurt.

Of course you still notice the empty place.

God isn't asking you to erase someone from your heart in order to continue living.

He is inviting you to trust Him as you learn to carry their memory into the days ahead.

You can remember yesterday and still embrace today.

You can miss someone and still make new memories.

You can cry over the empty chair and still be thankful for the people sitting around the table.

Both can be true.

🕊️ The Shepherd Knows How to Lead a Grieving Heart

I love Psalm 23.

David doesn't describe a shepherd who stands far away and shouts directions.

He describes a shepherd who leads.

“He leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul.”

What a beautiful picture for those of us walking through grief.

Sometimes we don't know how to move forward.

We don't know how to celebrate another holiday.

We don't know how to walk into church without the person who always sat beside us.

We don't know how to face another birthday or anniversary.

But Jesus does not demand that we figure out the entire journey before taking the next step.

He simply invites us to follow Him.

One day.

One prayer.

One memory.

One step at a time.

You don't have to know how to live the rest of your life without someone today. You only need to trust the Shepherd to lead you through this day.

🌸 Make Room for Memories and New Blessings

Sometimes we are afraid to change anything after losing someone.

We don't want to move their belongings.

We don't want to change family traditions.

We don't want to sit in their favorite chair.

We don't want to celebrate without them.

And there is no single timetable for those decisions.

But I want to gently encourage you today.

It's okay to make room for new blessings.

You can keep their photograph on the wall and hang new family pictures beside it.

You can continue an old tradition and create a new one.

You can make their favorite recipe and try something different.

You can tell their stories while making new memories with your children and grandchildren.

You are not replacing them.

You are continuing to live.

And there is a beautiful difference.

Making room for today does not mean removing yesterday from your heart.

đź’ś One Day, There Will Be No More Empty Places

As Christians, we have a precious hope.

Revelation 21:4 tells us:

“And God shall wipe away all tears from their eyes; and there shall be no more death, neither sorrow, nor crying, neither shall there be any more pain: for the former things are passed away.”

Can you imagine?

A day without funerals.

Without heartbreaking phone calls.

Without hospital rooms.

Without cemetery goodbyes.

Without death separating us from those we love.

What a glorious promise God has given His children!

Until then, we keep walking.

We keep loving.

We keep remembering.

We keep trusting Jesus.

And when the empty chair feels especially noticeable, we remember that the Shepherd is still beside us.

🙏 Thursday Morning Prayer

Heavenly Father,

This morning, I lift up every person who is learning to live with an empty chair.

Lord, You know exactly who we are missing.

You know the places where they used to sit.

You know the conversations we wish we could still have.

You know the family gatherings that feel different and the ordinary mornings when we long to hear their voices again.

Please comfort every grieving heart today.

For the parent missing a child, draw near.

For the widow or widower missing a spouse, bring peace.

For those missing Momma, Daddy, grandparents, siblings, friends, and loved ones, remind them that You see every tear.

Help us understand that continuing to live does not mean forgetting.

Give us permission to treasure old memories while making new ones.

Help us love the people who are still here.

Teach us to slow down, listen, hug longer, forgive quickly, and say “I love you” while we have the opportunity.

And when the journey feels overwhelming, remind us that You are our Shepherd.

Lead us beside the still waters.

Restore our souls.

Give us grace for today and hope for tomorrow.

Thank You for Jesus and the promise of eternal life through Him.

In His precious Name,

Amen.

🌻 Today's Grief Support Challenge

đź’ś Remember Who Sat in the Chair

Today, think about the person you miss and finish these three sentences:

1. “One thing I miss most about you is…”

Maybe it's their voice, their laugh, their hugs, or the way they always made you feel loved.

2. “One beautiful thing you taught me is…”

Think about the lessons, faith, kindness, and love they left behind.

3. “One way I can carry your love forward today is…”

Maybe you'll make their favorite recipe, tell a story, help someone, or spend time with family.

Then pray:

“Lord, thank You for the person who once filled that place in my life. Help me treasure their memory while continuing to live the life You have given me.”

đź’ś Let's Remember Them Together

If you feel comfortable, share in the comments:

Who is missing from your table today?

Tell us their name.

Tell us something funny they did.

Tell us about their favorite meal.

Tell us what made them special.

Let's remember the beautiful lives of the people who helped make our lives what they are today.

🤍 Need Prayer?

If the empty chair feels especially difficult today, we would be honored to pray with you.

Simply write:

“I'm missing someone today. Please pray for me.”

You don't need a long explanation.

God already knows the name upon your heart.

If grief becomes overwhelming or you are thinking about harming yourself, please reach out for immediate support.
