🌷 Behind the Smile, God Sees the Tears

You Don't Have to Pretend You're Okay With God

📖 Today's Scripture — KJV

"Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?" — Psalm 56:8

☕ Good Morning, Sweet Friends!

As I sit here with my morning coffee, watching another beautiful October morning begin, something has been weighing on my heart.

How many times have we smiled at someone while our hearts were breaking inside?

Someone asks, "How are you doing?"

And without even thinking, we answer:

"I'm fine."

"I'm doing okay."

"Just taking it one day at a time."

We smile, change the subject, and continue with our day.

But sometimes, if people could see what was happening inside our hearts, they would realize that our smiles are covering tears we haven't allowed ourselves to cry.

Oh, sweet friends, grief can teach us how to put on a brave face.

We learn to go to work.

We learn to attend family gatherings.

We learn to go shopping, pay bills, cook meals, and take care of everyone around us.

And sometimes we become so good at appearing strong that people forget we're still grieving.

But here's what I want to remind you today:

You may be able to hide your tears from the world, but you never have to hide them from God.

💜 The Smile That Hides a Thousand Emotions

One thing I've learned through my own grief journey is that people often see only what we allow them to see.

They see us laughing.

They see us working.

They see us attending church.

They see us helping others.

And they may assume that we're doing wonderfully.

But what they don't always see are the quiet moments.

The tears that come while driving down the road.

The memories that interrupt an otherwise ordinary afternoon.

The nights when sleep doesn't come easily.

Or the mornings when getting out of bed requires more strength than anyone realizes.

As many of you know, I lost my youngest son, Michael, seven years ago.

He was only 23 years old when his life was taken.

And although I continue living, working, serving in ministry, and enjoying the blessings God has given me, there are still moments when my heart aches for my boy.

Sometimes I can talk about him and smile.

Other times, the tears come before I can finish a sentence.

And sometimes I simply carry that missing piece of my heart quietly through the day.

Being able to smile again doesn't mean the heartbreak has disappeared.

It simply means we're learning to live with both love and loss.

🌿 When Everyone Thinks You're Strong

Have you ever heard someone say:

"You're so strong."

"I don't know how you do it."

"You've handled everything so well."

People usually mean those words as encouragement.

And we appreciate their kindness.

But sometimes I wonder whether they realize how often the people they call strong are simply doing their best to survive another day.

Strength doesn't always look like confidence.

Sometimes strength looks like getting dressed when you'd rather stay in bed.

Sometimes it looks like walking into church with tears in your eyes.

Sometimes it looks like asking someone to pray with you.

And sometimes strength looks like finally admitting:

"I'm not okay today."

Friend, you don't have to be everyone's example of strength.

You are a human being with a heart that has experienced loss.

You are allowed to have difficult days.

You are allowed to need encouragement.

You are allowed to ask for help.

And you are allowed to cry.

🕊️ God Sees What Others Cannot

Our Scripture today comes from Psalm 56:8:

"Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?"

What a beautiful picture of God's care.

David poured out his heart to the Lord during a time of fear and distress.

And in this verse, he expressed his confidence that God knew his suffering.

I love the thought that our tears matter to our Heavenly Father.

Not one sorrow is hidden from Him.

Not one sleepless night escapes His notice.

Not one whispered prayer goes unheard.

There may be people who don't understand why you're still grieving.

There may be those who think enough time has passed.

There may even be people who become uncomfortable when you speak about the person you lost.

But God never looks at your broken heart and says:

"Shouldn't you be over this by now?"

Instead, His Word reminds us that He is near to the brokenhearted.

God doesn't need you to put on a brave face before coming into His presence.

He already knows.

He knows the tears behind your smile.

He knows the memories you carry.

And He knows how deeply you love the person you're missing.

🌷 Sometimes We Need to Let the Tears Fall

I think many of us have been taught to hold our emotions inside.

We don't want to upset our families.

We don't want to make anyone uncomfortable.

We don't want people worrying about us.

So we swallow the tears.

We change the subject.

We tell ourselves to be strong.

But grief needs somewhere to go.

Sometimes that means talking to a trusted friend.

Sometimes it means writing in a journal.

Sometimes it means sitting quietly with our Bibles.

Sometimes it means reaching out to a grief counselor.

And sometimes it means allowing ourselves to cry.

Jesus Himself wept.

John 11:35 tells us:

"Jesus wept."

Think about that.

Our Lord understood sorrow.

He stood among grieving people, and He wept.

If Jesus could express sorrow, why do we sometimes believe that our own tears are signs of weak faith?

Sweet friend, tears are not a failure of faith.

You can trust God and still hurt.

You can believe His promises and still miss someone.

You can worship Him with tears streaming down your face.

And you can love Him deeply while struggling to understand what has happened in your life.

✝️ You Can Bring Your Whole Heart to Jesus

Matthew 11:28 gives us this beautiful invitation:

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest."

Notice that Jesus doesn't tell us to come only when we're happy.

He doesn't tell us to get our emotions under control first.

He doesn't tell us to stop grieving before approaching Him.

He says:

"Come unto me."

Bring the heavy heart.

Bring the questions.

Bring the exhaustion.

Bring the tears.

Bring the memories.

Bring the loneliness.

Bring the love that still fills your heart.

And allow Him to strengthen you.

Sometimes we expect God to take away every painful feeling immediately.

But often His comfort comes as He helps us endure what we cannot change.

Through His Word.

Through prayer.

Through the kindness of others.

Through the support of our church families.

And through those small moments of peace that remind us we are not alone.

🍂 Be Gentle With the People Around You

There's something else I want us to remember today.

We never know what someone else may be carrying behind their smile.

The cheerful cashier may have recently lost her husband.

The coworker who makes everyone laugh may be grieving a parent.

The person sitting quietly in church may be missing a child.

The friend who always checks on everyone else may desperately need someone to check on them.

And the person who seems to have everything together may be struggling just to make it through the week.

That's why kindness matters.

A gentle word matters.

A phone call matters.

A sincere "How are you really doing?" matters.

And sometimes simply listening without trying to fix everything can be one of the greatest gifts we give.

We don't always need someone to take away our pain. Sometimes we just need someone willing to sit beside us while we're hurting.

💜 You Don't Have to Apologize for Your Grief

I want to close today's thoughts by speaking directly to the person who has been trying so hard to hold everything together.

Sweet friend, you don't have to apologize because you're still grieving.

You don't have to explain why a certain song makes you cry.

You don't have to feel embarrassed because an anniversary is difficult.

You don't have to pretend you're okay just to make everyone else comfortable.

And you don't have to carry everything alone.

There will be days when your smile is genuine.

There will be days when the tears come easily.

And there may be days when you experience both.

That's part of learning to live after loss.

My love for Michael remains with me every day.

Some days that love brings beautiful memories and smiles.

Other days it brings tears because I miss him so much.

But through it all, I am thankful that I serve a God who understands the heart of a grieving mother.

He sees the smile. He sees the tears. And He loves us through both.

🙏 Tuesday Morning Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for another beautiful morning.

Thank You for waking us up today and giving us another opportunity to experience Your love and mercy.

Lord, today I want to pray especially for the people who are hurting behind their smiles.

For the mother who gets up every morning and continues caring for her family while missing the child she lost.

For the father who quietly carries his grief because he believes he must be strong for everyone else.

For the husband or wife who smiles in public but returns home to an empty house.

For the son or daughter who wishes they could hear their parent's voice again.

And for every grieving heart that has become so good at saying "I'm fine" that nobody realizes how much they're struggling.

Father, You see what others cannot.

You know the tears that fall in private.

You know the memories that bring sudden heartache.

You know the loneliness that comes in the quiet hours.

And You know the strength it sometimes takes just to face another day.

Lord, please remind us that we don't have to hide our emotions from You.

Help us bring our sorrow honestly before Your throne.

Give us courage to ask for help when we need it.

Surround us with people who will listen, encourage, and pray with us.

And help us become those same caring people for others.

Father, I thank You for my precious son, Michael.

Thank You for the years I was blessed to be his Momma.

Thank You for the memories that still make me smile.

And thank You for understanding the tears that come because I miss him.

Lord, please continue strengthening every grieving parent.

Every widow and widower.

Every child missing a mother or father.

Every person whose heart is aching today.

Help us remember that our tears are not signs of failure.

Remind us that Your grace is sufficient.

And teach us to rest in Your love when we feel overwhelmed.

Thank You for Jesus Christ.

Thank You for the hope of eternal life through Him.

And thank You that one day, for those who belong to Christ, sorrow and death will be no more.

Until then, help us walk by faith, love one another, and trust You one day at a time.

In Jesus' precious and holy Name,

Amen.

🌻 Today's Grief Support Challenge

Look Beyond the Smile

Today, I want to encourage you to do three simple things.

💜 1. Be honest with yourself.

Take a moment to ask:

"How am I really feeling today?"

You don't have to pretend with yourself or with God.

🌷 2. Reach out to someone you trust.

If you've been carrying a heavy heart, consider sharing how you're feeling with someone who cares.

Sometimes saying "I'm having a difficult day" is the first step toward receiving the support we need.

🕊️ 3. Check on someone else.

Think of someone who always seems strong.

Someone who is always smiling.

Someone who is usually the one encouraging everyone else.

Send them a message or give them a call.

You never know how much that simple act of kindness may mean.

💬 Let's Talk About It, Sweet Friends

Today, I want to ask a question that I believe many of us can relate to.

Have you ever told someone you were okay when, deep down, you were really struggling with grief?

Why do you think we sometimes feel the need to hide our sadness?

And what has helped you feel comfortable opening up about your grief?

If you're comfortable, share your thoughts in the comments.

Your experience may encourage someone else who has been quietly struggling.

And if today is one of those days when you're smiling on the outside but hurting on the inside, simply leave a 💜.

You don't have to explain anything.

We will lift you up in prayer.

🤍 Need Prayer or Grief Support?

💜 Agape Love Tuesday Reminder

Behind the Smile, God Sees the Tears

🌷 You don't have to be strong every moment.

💜 You don't have to hide your tears.

🕊️ You don't have to pretend you're okay.

✝️ And you never have to face your grief without God's loving presence.

"The world may see your smile, but God sees the tears you've cried in secret. He knows the sorrow you carry, the love you still hold, and the strength it takes to face another day."

Have a blessed Tuesday, sweet friends.

As you go through your day, remember to be gentle with yourself and kind to others.

We never know what someone may be carrying behind their smile.
