Good morning, crafting friends!
Today's project is for everyone who loves walking through a thrift store and finding something that makes you stop and say...
“I KNOW I CAN DO SOMETHING WITH THAT!” 😂
We're hunting for an old hard-sided suitcase and giving it a completely different purpose.
Instead of storing it in the attic, we're turning it into a charming Cottage Side Table with SECRET STORAGE inside!
Beautiful. Useful. Repurposed.

🛒 WHAT YOU'LL NEED
🧳 Vintage or sturdy hard-sided suitcase🧽 Cleaning supplies🪵 4 furniture legs or salvaged table legs🔩 Appropriate mounting plates/hardware🪛 Drill and screwdriver📏 Measuring tape✏️ Pencil🎨 Paint or stain — optional🖌️ Paintbrush📜 Wallpaper or fabric — optional✂️ Scissors🖌️ Decoupage medium or fabric adhesive — optional🪵 Scrap wood for reinforcement if needed🧰 Appropriate screws and washers🌿 Décor for styling
♻️ THRIFTING TIP
Don't worry if the suitcase isn't pretty!
Look for:
✔️ A solid shell✔️ Working hinges✔️ A sturdy bottom✔️ Interesting hardware✔️ A great old handle✔️ Lots of character!
Scratches?
Scuffs?
Little imperfections?
THAT'S PART OF THE STORY!
1️⃣ CLEAN YOUR SUITCASE
Vacuum the inside and carefully clean the exterior with a product appropriate for its material.
Check the:
🔩 Hinges🧳 Handle🔒 Latches🪵 Bottom
Make sure everything is sturdy enough for a decorative side table.
If it's very fragile, skip the legs and simply use it as decorative storage instead.
2️⃣ DECIDE: RESTORE OR REDO?
This is the fun decision!
If your suitcase has gorgeous vintage character...
LEAVE IT ALONE! 😍
But if it needs some love, you could paint appropriate surfaces:
🤍 Antique White🌿 Sage Green💜 Dusty Lavender🩵 Cottage Blue🤎 Warm Brown
Or add a subtle botanical or floral design.
Don't erase ALL its age.
Sometimes those little marks are exactly what make a thrifted piece special.
3️⃣ GIVE THE INSIDE A SURPRISE!
Open the suitcase.
Now imagine the inside lined with:
🌸 Vintage floral fabric
📜 Botanical wallpaper
🤍 Lace
🗺️ Reproduction maps
💜 Lavender floral paper
📖 Reproduction book-page prints
Measure your interior and carefully attach your chosen liner.
Now when someone opens the table...
THERE'S ANOTHER LITTLE SURPRISE INSIDE!
4️⃣ PREPARE THE BASE
This is the most important step.
Don't simply screw legs through a thin suitcase shell.
If necessary, cut a piece of sturdy wood slightly smaller than the suitcase bottom and secure it appropriately underneath or inside as reinforcement.
Attach furniture-leg mounting plates to the reinforced base according to their instructions.
SAFETY FIRST!
Our project needs to be pretty AND sturdy.
5️⃣ ADD YOUR LEGS
Now choose your personality!
Try:
🪵 Turned farmhouse legs
🤎 Natural wood legs
🖤 Black tapered legs
🤍 White cottage legs
♻️ Salvaged legs from an unwanted table
Attach all four securely.
Stand your table upright and check that it doesn't wobble.
And LOOK at what just happened...

6️⃣ USE THE SECRET STORAGE!
Open your suitcase and fill it with things you want nearby but don't necessarily want sitting out.
Store:
🧶 Yarn
📚 Books
🧩 Games
🛏️ Extra blankets
🎨 Craft supplies
📖 Journals
🙏 Prayer materials
📸 Family photographs
💌 Keepsakes
The clutter disappears...
But the table stays beautiful!
7️⃣ STYLE YOUR NEW TABLE
Now let's make it feel like home.
Add:

🏺 Little thrifted pitcher
