🌻 DOLLAR STORE CRAFT OF THE DAY
🪣 Dollar Store Wastebasket → Cozy Fall Farmhouse Basket
Good morning, crafting friends! 💜
Today we're heading back to the dollar store, but this time I want you to look in an aisle you probably wouldn't normally visit for crafting supplies.
🗑️ THE TRASH CAN & STORAGE AISLE!
Yep—you read that right! 😂
We're taking a simple inexpensive wire or plastic wastebasket and transforming it into a beautiful Cozy Fall Farmhouse Basket using rope, fabric, ribbon, and fall treasures.
When we're finished, nobody has to know what it started as!
🛒 WHAT YOU'LL NEED
🪣 Small dollar-store wastebasket🧶 Jute rope or thick twine🤍 Burlap, drop cloth, or inexpensive fabric🎀 Plaid, gingham, or burlap ribbon🌻 Faux sunflowers🍂 Fall leaves🌿 Greenery🎃 Mini pumpkins🌾 Wheat or fall floral picks🖌️ Hot glue gun & glue sticks✂️ Scissors🪵 Optional wooden tag🧺 Optional thrifted leather belt for handles
💡 MONEY-SAVING TIP
Don't buy everything!
Check your craft stash, old clothes, and thrifted supplies first.
An old plaid shirt can become your basket lining.
An unwanted belt can become handles.
Leftover rope can cover the basket.
Repurpose before you purchase! ♻️
🧶 STEP 1 — WRAP YOUR BASKET
Begin at the bottom of your wastebasket.
Secure the end of your jute rope with hot glue.
Slowly wrap the rope around the outside, keeping each row snug against the previous row.
Add small amounts of glue as you work your way upward.
Continue until the original basket is covered.
Already looking different, isn't it? 😍
✂️ STEP 2 — CREATE YOUR COTTAGE LINER
Cut a piece of burlap, drop cloth, or repurposed fabric large enough to line the inside.
Don't worry about sewing a perfect liner.
For a relaxed cottage look, simply tuck your fabric inside and allow several inches to fold over the top edge.
Try using:
🤎 Burlap🧡 Fall plaid🤍 Drop cloth🖤 Buffalo check🌻 Vintage floral fabric
An old shirt works wonderfully!
🧺 STEP 3 — ADD HANDLES
Want to make it look even less like a wastebasket?
Create two little handles!
You can use:
🤎 Pieces of an old leather belt🧶 Braided jute🎀 Thick ribbon🪢 Rope
Attach one handle to each side securely.
Now we're getting that expensive farmhouse basket look!
🏷️ STEP 4 — ADD A LITTLE TAG
Use a small wooden tag, scrap wood, or even a piece of cardboard covered with scrapbook paper.
Write:
🍂 Gather
🌻 Harvest
🙏 Blessed
🏡 Home
🎃 Pumpkins
💜 Thankful
Tie it onto the front with jute.
🌻 STEP 5 — TURN IT INTO A FALL DISPLAY
Now comes the fun part!
Fill your basket with:
🌻 Sunflowers🎃 Mini pumpkins🍂 Fall leaves🌾 Wheat🌿 Greenery🌲 Pinecones
Allow the flowers and greenery to spill naturally over the sides.
Don't try to make it too perfect.
That relaxed, collected look is what gives it cozy cottage charm.
🎀 STEP 6 — ADD YOUR FINISHING TOUCH
Tie a little plaid or gingham ribbon around one handle.
Or add a small bundle of:
🌻 One sunflower🍂 A few leaves🌾 Wheat🎀 Burlap ribbon
Sometimes ONE little detail is all a project needs.
🏡 STEP 7 — STYLE YOUR NEW TREASURE!
Display your basket:
🔥 Beside the fireplace🚪 Near your entryway🪜 Beside a blanket ladder🍽️ Under a console table🧺 On a shelf🎃 In your fall porch display
Add a lantern and a few pumpkins beside it, and you've created an entire fall vignette!
🍂 OR... MAKE IT USEFUL!
Your new farmhouse basket doesn't have to be decoration only.
Use it for:
🧣 Rolled blankets
🧶 Yarn
🧻 Extra bathroom towels
🧸 Children's toys
📚 Books
🐾 Pet supplies
🧦 Mittens and scarves
Beautiful AND useful—that's my kind of craft!
♻️ CHANGE IT WITH THE SEASONS!
Remove the fall decorations and keep using your basket!
🎄 Christmas: Pine branches & plaid blankets
🌷 Spring: Tulips & floral fabric
🇺🇸 Summer: Picnic blankets & patriotic ribbon
🍂 Fall: Pumpkins & sunflowers
And because the basket itself is neutral, you don't have to remake it every season.
💰 TODAY'S $10 CHALLENGE!
Here's today's challenge:
Can you make your basket for $10 or LESS?
Bonus points if you can make it for $5 by using things you already own! 🙌
Before buying fabric—check the closet.

💜 TODAY'S INSPIRATION
One of my favorite things about repurposing is seeing potential where someone else may see something ordinary.
Today's project started as a simple wastebasket.
But with a little creativity, it became something completely different.
Sometimes we need to look at the ordinary things around us with fresh eyes.
There may be more possibility there than we realize. 💜
"And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;"
— Colossians 3:23 (KJV)

Remember: before you throw it away, donate it, or walk past it at the thrift store... ask yourself:
