Old Wooden Bread Box → Cozy Cottage Harvest Display
Happy First Day of Fall, crafting friends! 🍎🍂
Who's ready for cozy mornings, warm cups of coffee, beautiful autumn colors, homemade soups, and all the wonderful things that make this season special?
Today, we're taking something that might be sitting forgotten in Grandma's kitchen or waiting for us at a thrift store—an OLD WOODEN BREAD BOX!
You know those old-fashioned bread boxes with the roll-top doors?
Well, we're giving one a beautiful second chance!
With a little paint, some thrifted treasures, and a few autumn decorations, we're transforming it into a gorgeous harvest display that can sit on your kitchen counter, dining-room buffet, or coffee bar.
And the best part?
You can still use it for storage!
🛒 WHAT YOU'LL NEED
🪵 Old wooden bread box
🎨 Chalk or furniture paint
🖌️ Paintbrush
🧽 Sandpaper (optional)
🌻 Faux sunflowers
🌾 Wheat stems
🍎 Faux apples
🍂 Autumn leaves
🎀 Gingham, burlap, or plaid ribbon
🧶 Jute twine
🪵 Small wooden sign or tag
🌿 Greenery
🕯️ Battery-operated flameless candle (optional)
Before shopping, check what you already have! Old floral arrangements, ribbon scraps, baskets, and leftover paint are perfect for today's project.
🔨 STEP-BY-STEP DIRECTIONS
STEP 1
Find your bread box
Look for a wooden bread box at thrift stores, flea markets, estate sales, or yard sales.
Don't worry about outdated colors or scratches!
Check that the door opens and closes properly and the wood is sturdy.
STEP 2
Give it a cottage makeover
Clean the bread box thoroughly.
Paint the exterior in your favorite cottage color:

💜 Dusty Lavender

🩵 Cottage Blue
Allow the paint to dry completely.
Lightly distress a safe, modern painted finish if you want a vintage appearance.
STEP 3
Add your harvest message
Use a small wooden plaque, stencil, or removable sign.

Attach your sign to the front or display it beside the bread box.
If you want to preserve the original wood, use a freestanding sign instead of painting lettering directly onto it.
STEP 4
Create your sunflower arrangement
Gather a few sunflowers, wheat stems, and greenery.
Tie them together using jute twine.
Add a small plaid or gingham bow.
Place the arrangement on top of your bread box or in a small pitcher beside it.
Keep the arrangement loose and natural for that collected-over-time cottage appearance.
STEP 5
Add your autumn treasures
Surround your bread box with:

🍂 Autumn leaves
🎃 Plain harvest pumpkins

You don't need everything!

If you plan to use it for bread or other unpackaged food, keep the food-contact surfaces untreated and food-safe.
💡 BONUS IDEA — MAKE IT A COFFEE BAR!
Instead of a traditional harvest display, turn your bread box into a little coffee station.
Place your favorite mugs beside it and use the inside to hold coffee pods, filters, sweetener, and tea.
Add a little sign that says:
