✨ RANDOM CRAFT OF THE DAY
🗄️ Old Drawer → Charming Cottage Wall Shelf
Good morning, crafting friends! 💜
Today we're taking a break from our seasonal crafts and doing something completely RANDOM!
You know those lonely old drawers you sometimes see at thrift stores, flea markets, estate sales, or sitting beside an old dresser?
DON'T PASS THEM BY! 👀
One forgotten drawer can become a beautiful Cottage Wall Shelf for your bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, craft room, or entryway.
We're giving something old a brand-new purpose!
🛒 WHAT YOU'LL NEED
🗄️ Old wooden drawer🧽 Cleaning supplies🪵 Small piece of wood for an interior shelf🎨 Chalk or furniture paint🖌️ Paintbrush🧽 Sandpaper🔩 Screws or small brackets🪛 Screwdriver/drill📏 Measuring tape🪵 Optional decorative feet or knobs📜 Optional wallpaper or scrapbook paper🖌️ Decoupage medium — optional🪝 Proper wall-hanging hardware
♻️ THRIFTING TIP
Don't worry about finding a perfect drawer!
Look for one with:
✨ An interesting handle🪵 Solid wood🏡 Pretty molding🤎 A little age and character
Scratches and an ugly color don't scare us.
We're crafters—we can fix that! 😂
1️⃣ CLEAN & INSPECT
Remove the drawer from any old hardware you don't need and give it a good cleaning.
Check that the wood is sturdy.
Tighten loose screws and repair anything necessary before decorating.
Then turn the drawer so the open side faces forward.
See it now?
That drawer just became a shadow-box shelf!
2️⃣ PAINT YOUR DRAWER
Choose a color that works with your home:
🤍 Antique White🌿 Sage Green💜 Muted Lavender🩵 Dusty Blue🤎 Natural Wood🖤 Classic Black
Or keep the original finish if it's beautiful!
After the paint dries, lightly distress the edges if you want a cottage or farmhouse look.
3️⃣ DON'T FORGET THE INSIDE!
Here's where we can really make it special.
Cover the inside back with:
🌸 Floral wallpaper📜 Scrapbook paper📰 Vintage-style paper🤍 Lace🌿 Botanical print🗺️ Old map reproduction
Or paint the inside a contrasting color.
Imagine an antique-white drawer with a soft lavender floral print inside. 💜😍
4️⃣ ADD AN INTERIOR SHELF
Measure the inside width of your drawer.
Cut a small piece of wood to fit across the middle.
Paint or stain it.
Secure it with small brackets or screws appropriate for the drawer.
Now instead of ONE display area...
YOU HAVE TWO!
If you're not comfortable cutting wood, check the craft-wood section for a piece close to the size you need.
5️⃣ KEEP THAT OLD DRAWER PULL!
This is my favorite part.
If your drawer has a beautiful vintage handle...
KEEP IT!
Once the drawer is mounted sideways or upright, that handle can become:
🧣 Scarf holder📿 Necklace hanger🔑 Key hook🧻 Hand-towel holder🌿 Place to hang a tiny wreath
That old hardware adds so much personality!
6️⃣ ADD A LITTLE SIGN
Create a tiny sign from scrap wood.
Try:
🏡 Home Sweet Home
💜 Stay Awhile
🙏 Bless This Home
🌿 Simply Blessed
☕ Coffee & Friends
Or personalize it with your family name.
Lean it inside rather than permanently attaching it so you can change your display later.
7️⃣ DECORATE YOUR NEW SHELF!
Now comes the fun part!
Add a few small treasures:
📚 Vintage books🌱 Small plant🕯️ Flameless candle🫙 Mason jar📸 Family photograph🙏 Scripture card🏺 Tiny pitcher🧺 Mini basket⏰ Vintage clock
DON'T OVERFILL IT!
Leave a little empty space so your favorite pieces stand out.
🏡 WHERE COULD YOU USE IT?
🚿 BATHROOM
Rolled washcloths, soap, lotion and a little plant.
☕ KITCHEN
Coffee mugs, recipe cards and vintage utensils.
🔑 ENTRYWAY
Keys, mail and a family photograph.
🧵 CRAFT ROOM
Ribbon, scissors, thread and buttons.
🛏️ BEDROOM
Jewelry, perfume and photographs.
🙏 PRAYER CORNER
Bible, prayer cards, Scripture and a small journal.
One drawer can become something completely different depending on YOUR home.
💡 BONUS IDEA — STACK THEM!
Find two or three mismatched drawers.
Paint them coordinating colors and mount them together at different heights.
Now you've created an entire Cottage Gallery Wall from furniture pieces someone else didn't want!
How fun would THAT be? 😍
💰 TODAY'S $10 THRIFT CHALLENGE
Head to the thrift store, estate sale, flea market, or your own garage.
Your challenge:
FIND AN OLD DRAWER FOR $10 OR LESS!
Then try to complete the rest using things you already own.
Leftover paint.
Scrap wood.
Wallpaper scraps.
Old knobs.
Décor you already have.
The goal isn't to see how much we can BUY.
It's to see how much we can CREATE from what already exists. ♻️
💜 TODAY'S INSPIRATION
This is exactly why I love repurposing.
Most people see an old drawer and think:
“That dresser is gone. What good is this?”
A crafter looks at the same drawer and thinks:
“WAIT... I CAN DO SOMETHING WITH THAT!” 😂
Sometimes the things that appear to have outlived their original purpose simply need someone with enough imagination to see their next purpose.
"And whatsoever ye do, do it heartily, as to the Lord, and not unto men;"
— Colossians 3:23 (KJV)
🗄️ QUESTION OF THE DAY
If you found an old drawer at a thrift store today, what would YOU turn it into?
🏡 Wall shelf☕ Coffee station🌱 Planter🧵 Craft organizer🙏 Prayer shelf🔑 Entryway organizer💡 Something completely different!
Tell us your idea in the comments!
And don't forget...
📸 SHOW US WHAT YOU'RE WORKING ON!
Whether it's a $2 thrift find, a furniture makeover, something from the Dollar Store, or a project you've been working on for weeks, we want to see it!
💜 BEFORE YOU THROW IT AWAY, ASK YOURSELF:
“WHAT ELSE COULD THIS BECOME?”
THRIFT IT. ♻️ REPURPOSE IT. 🔨 CREATE IT. 🎨 LOVE IT. 💜
