YOUR CALLING REQUIRES A STEP OF FAITH
Theme Verse:
“For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.”
— James 2:26 (KJV)
GOOD MORNING, DEAR FRIENDS!
Yesterday we asked an important question: “What burden has God placed on my heart?”
Maybe something immediately came to mind—a group of people, a ministry, a need in your community, someone who is hurting, a dream God planted in your heart years ago, or perhaps something you have felt called to do but have continued putting off.
Recognizing a burden is important. Praying about it is essential. But eventually there comes a moment when God asks us to do something that can feel frightening:
TAKE THE FIRST STEP.
You can pray about your calling. You can study it. You can journal about it, talk about it, dream about it, and prepare for it.
But eventually, faith has to move our feet.
TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READING:
James 2:14–26
Joshua 3:7–17
Matthew 14:25–31
Hebrews 11:1–10
Proverbs 16:3
Psalm 37:5
TODAY’S BIBLE STUDY:
There are moments throughout Scripture when God’s people had to move before they saw the miracle.
Joshua chapter 3 gives us a beautiful example.
Israel needed to cross the Jordan River. The river stood between where they were and where God was leading them.
God could have dried the river before anyone approached it, but that isn’t what happened.
The priests carrying the ark had to walk toward the water.
“And as they that bare the ark were come unto Jordan, and the feet of the priests that bare the ark were dipped in the brim of the water...”
— Joshua 3:15 (KJV)
Then the waters parted.
Don’t miss that.
Their feet touched the water before they saw the way open.
Sometimes we want God to part the water first, and then we’ll walk.
But sometimes God says, “Trust Me enough to take the step.”
FAITH DOESN’T MEAN HAVING EVERY ANSWER
We sometimes imagine that people walking confidently in their calling know exactly what they’re doing.
Usually, they don’t.
Abraham didn’t know exactly where he was going.
Moses didn’t know how Pharaoh would respond.
David didn’t know how every battle would end.
Esther didn’t know whether the king would receive her.
Peter didn’t know what stepping onto the water would feel like.
They simply knew enough about God to trust Him with what they didn’t know.
That is faith.
Faith doesn’t say, “I understand everything.”
Faith says, “I trust God even when I don’t.”
STOP WAITING UNTIL YOU FEEL READY
This is where many callings become stuck.
We say:
“I’ll do it when I’m more confident.”
“I’ll start when I know more.”
“I’ll serve when life settles down.”
“I’ll speak when I’m not nervous.”
“I’ll begin when everything is perfect.”
But what if you never feel completely ready?
God’s calling often requires us to grow while we are walking in it.
Think about Peter.
He didn’t become a seasoned apostle before following Jesus.
Jesus said:
“Follow Me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
— Matthew 4:19 (KJV)
Notice the order.
Follow Me.
Then...
I will make you.
Peter didn’t have to become everything before he started. He became who God called him to be while following Jesus.
And so will we.
START SMALL
A calling doesn’t always begin with something enormous.
Perhaps God has placed teaching on your heart. You don’t have to begin with an auditorium. Start with three people around a kitchen table.
Maybe God has called you to encourage grieving families. Start by sending one card.
Maybe you feel called to write. Write one page.
Maybe you want to serve your community. Help one person.
Maybe God has placed young people on your heart. Encourage one teenager.
Maybe you feel called to share the Gospel. Tell one person what Jesus has done for you.
Small obedience is still obedience.
Never despise the beginning simply because it looks small.
FAITH IS NOT RECKLESSNESS
Taking a step of faith doesn’t mean acting without wisdom.
There is a difference between faith and impulsiveness.
Biblical faith remains grounded in God’s Word.
Before making a major decision, pray.
Search Scripture.
Seek godly counsel.
Consider your responsibilities.
Ask God for wisdom.
Make sure the direction you are pursuing agrees with biblical truth.
God’s calling will never require you to disobey God’s Word.
But once God has made the next step clear, don’t allow fear to disguise itself as “waiting on the Lord.”
There is a time to wait, and there is a time to walk.
Ask God for wisdom to know the difference.
REFLECTION QUESTIONS:
1. What has God already shown me that I need to act upon?
2. Have I been waiting for perfect circumstances?
3. What fear keeps me from moving forward?
4. Am I asking God for confirmation when He has already given direction?
5. What is one small step I could take today?
6. Who could provide wise, biblical encouragement as I move forward?
7. What would obedience look like this week?
TODAY’S PRAYER:
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for having a purpose for my life.
Thank You for every gift, experience, opportunity, and burden You have placed within my heart.
Lord, I don’t want to spend my life simply talking about what You’ve called me to do. I want to obey.
Give me wisdom to recognize Your direction.
Give me patience when You tell me to wait, but give me courage when You tell me to move.
Forgive me for the times fear has kept me standing still.
Help me stop waiting until I feel perfectly prepared.
Teach me to trust that if You call me, You will continue preparing me along the journey.
When I reach my Jordan River, give me enough faith to put my feet in the water.
When I face uncertainty, remind me that You already know what is ahead.
When I feel inadequate, remind me that Your strength is made perfect in weakness.
Today I surrender my plans to You.
Order my steps.
Open the doors You want opened.
Close the doors You want closed.
And give me courage to walk faithfully through whatever door You place before me.
In the precious name of Jesus,
Amen.
TODAY’S CALLING CHALLENGE:
Take out your journal and write:
MY NEXT FAITHFUL STEP
Underneath, write the calling, burden, dream, or area of service God has been placing on your heart.
Then ask yourself:
“What is ONE thing I can do within the next seven days?”
Not twenty things.
One.
Maybe it is:
Make the phone call.
Write the first page.
Ask someone to pray with you.
Begin studying.
Volunteer somewhere.
Invite someone to talk.
Send the email.
Record the first video.
Write down the plan.
Speak with your pastor.
Whatever your next step is, write it down and place a date beside it.
Faith becomes powerful when prayer turns into obedience.
TODAY’S ENCOURAGEMENT:
Don’t become discouraged because you cannot see the entire staircase.
God hasn’t asked you to climb tomorrow’s steps today.
He is asking you to faithfully take today’s step.
Your beginning may feel small.
Your hands may shake.
Your voice may tremble.
You may wonder whether you’re capable.
But remember:
Your confidence isn’t in yourself.
Your confidence is in the God who called you.
“Commit thy works unto the LORD, and thy thoughts shall be established.”
— Proverbs 16:3 (KJV)
SOMETHING IMPORTANT TO REMEMBER:
Sometimes we pray, “Lord, use me.”
Then God gives us an opportunity that looks inconvenient.
We pray, “Lord, give me a ministry.”
Then He places one hurting person in front of us.
We pray, “Lord, show me my purpose.”
Then He asks us to faithfully serve where we already are.
Don’t overlook today’s opportunity while waiting for tomorrow’s assignment.
Calling often begins with faithfulness right where God has planted you.
CLOSING THOUGHT:
Your calling doesn’t require you to know the whole plan. It requires you to know the One who does.
God knows where the road leads.
He knows what you’ll need.
He knows whom you’ll meet.
He knows the doors that will open.
And He knows how every step will fit together.
Your responsibility isn’t to figure out the entire journey.
Your responsibility is to listen for His direction and faithfully obey.
So today, ask yourself:
“What is my next step?”
And when God shows you...
TAKE IT.
The waters may not part until your feet touch the edge.
Have a beautiful and faith-filled Tuesday!
