☕ GOOD MORNING & HAPPY SUNDAY!

I was sitting here thinking about how easy it is to notice when something needs cleaning.

We see dust on the furniture.

Dishes in the sink.

Laundry that needs washing.

A floor that needs sweeping.

And if someone is coming over, we might suddenly notice things we've walked past all week!

But what about our hearts?

Sometimes we can become so busy cleaning up everything around us that we forget to ask God to clean up what's going on inside us.

We may look fine on the outside.

We may smile at church.

We may tell everybody we're doing wonderful.

We may even encourage someone else with Scripture while quietly struggling with something in our own hearts.

Bitterness.

Pride.

Jealousy.

Fear.

Unforgiveness.

A wrong attitude.

A hidden sin.

A burden we've been carrying instead of giving to God.

And today I believe the Lord is reminding us of something very important:

BEFORE WE ASK GOD TO CHANGE EVERYBODY ELSE, WE NEED TO ASK HIM TO START WITH US.

David didn't pray:

“Lord, clean up everybody who has hurt me.”

He didn't pray:

“Lord, show everybody else what they're doing wrong.”

He prayed:

“Create in ME a clean heart, O God.”

Friend, that little word ME changes everything.

❤️ 1. DAVID KNEW HE NEEDED GOD TO CHANGE HIS HEART

Psalm 51 is one of the most personal prayers in Scripture.

David had sinned.

He had made terrible choices.

He had tried to cover what he had done.

But when confronted with his sin, David eventually came before God in repentance.

He didn't need a better excuse.

He didn't need a more convincing explanation.

He needed mercy.

Psalm 51:1 says:

“Have mercy upon me, O God, according to thy lovingkindness: according unto the multitude of thy tender mercies blot out my transgressions.”

David understood something we all need to remember.

WE CANNOT HEAL A SINFUL HEART BY PRETENDING NOTHING IS WRONG.

We have to bring it before the Lord.

And that's where restoration begins.

🛡️ 2. THE BREASTPLATE PROTECTS THE HEART—BUT GOD MUST CLEAN THE HEART

This week we've been studying the Breastplate of Righteousness.

A soldier's breastplate protected vital organs, including the heart.

Spiritually, our righteousness is found in Jesus Christ.

But wearing the Breastplate of Righteousness doesn't mean we ignore what's happening inside us.

We still need to ask God to search us.

We still need to confess sin.

We still need to surrender wrong attitudes.

We still need to choose obedience.

We still need to guard against bitterness, pride, and unforgiveness.

THE BREASTPLATE IS NOT A COVER FOR A HEART WE REFUSE TO SURRENDER.

It reminds us to depend upon Christ and walk in the righteousness He calls us to.

🪞 3. LORD, SEARCH ME

Psalm 139:23–24 says:

“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts: And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”

That's a powerful prayer.

Because sometimes we don't even recognize what has been growing inside us.

Maybe someone hurt us months ago.

We said we forgave them.

But every time their name comes up, anger rises.

Maybe we've been comparing ourselves with somebody else.

We didn't realize jealousy had started taking root.

Maybe we've been complaining so often that gratitude has become difficult.

Maybe we've been allowing fear to make our decisions.

Maybe we've become more concerned about proving we're right than showing the love of Christ.

Today, instead of asking:

“Lord, why are they acting like that?”

Let's ask:

“LORD, IS THERE SOMETHING IN ME THAT NEEDS YOUR ATTENTION?”

🌿 4. A CLEAN HEART DOESN'T MEAN A HEART THAT HAS NEVER BEEN BROKEN

I want to speak to someone who may be carrying grief today.

Sometimes our hearts feel heavy because we've experienced loss, disappointment, betrayal, or pain.

And we may think something is wrong with us because we're still hurting.

Friend, having a clean heart doesn't mean you never cry.

It doesn't mean you never grieve.

It doesn't mean you never feel disappointed.

It doesn't mean you have to pretend life hasn't hurt you.

Jesus Himself wept.

A clean heart is not a heart that has never experienced pain.

IT IS A HEART WE CONTINUE BRINGING TO GOD, EVEN IN THE MIDDLE OF THAT PAIN.

We can say:

“Lord, I'm hurting.”

“Lord, I don't understand.”

“Lord, I miss them.”

“Lord, I'm disappointed.”

“Lord, I'm struggling.”

And still pray:

“KEEP MY HEART TENDER TOWARD YOU.”

Don't confuse a wounded heart with a wicked heart.

Bring your wounds to the One who understands them.

✂️ 5. SOMETIMES GOD HAS TO REMOVE WHAT WE'VE ALLOWED TO GROW

Yesterday we studied the fruit of the Spirit.

We talked about pruning.

And today that lesson continues.

Sometimes God shows us something that needs to go.

A habit.

A grudge.

A relationship pattern.

A wrong attitude.

An unhealthy influence.

A secret compromise.

And sometimes we want Him to change everything except that one thing!

We pray:

“Lord, use me.”

“Lord, bless me.”

“Lord, draw me closer.”

But when He begins showing us something we need to surrender, we resist.

Friend, we cannot ask God to fill our hearts while insisting on keeping everything that is crowding Him out.

SOMETIMES THE FIRST STEP TOWARD RENEWAL IS LETTING GO.

💜 6. DON'T LET BITTERNESS TAKE UP PERMANENT RESIDENCE

Someone may have genuinely wronged you.

You may have been treated unfairly.

You may have experienced betrayal.

And you don't have to pretend it didn't happen.

Forgiveness does not mean every relationship must return to what it was.

Boundaries can still be necessary.

But we must guard against allowing bitterness to become the place where our hearts live.

Bitterness doesn't heal yesterday.

It can steal peace from today.

Ask God:

“LORD, HELP ME RELEASE WHAT I'VE BEEN CARRYING.”

Not because what happened was acceptable.

But because you don't want the wrong someone else did to keep controlling what grows inside you.

🌻 7. RESTORE UNTO ME THE JOY OF THY SALVATION

David didn't stop at asking for a clean heart.

Psalm 51:12 says:

“Restore unto me the joy of thy salvation; and uphold me with thy free spirit.”

Sometimes we become spiritually exhausted.

We're going through the motions.

Reading Scripture feels like another task.

Prayer becomes something we rush through.

Church becomes routine.

We know all the right words, but our hearts feel distant.

Friend, don't settle for simply going through the motions.

Ask God to renew your joy.

Not temporary happiness based on circumstances.

But the deep joy of knowing:

I BELONG TO JESUS.

MY SINS CAN BE FORGIVEN.

GOD HAS NOT ABANDONED ME.

HIS MERCIES ARE NEW EVERY MORNING.

Sometimes we need to return to the basics.

Jesus.

Bible.

Prayer.

Worship.

Obedience.

Gratitude.

And time alone with our Heavenly Father.

🕊️ 8. A CLEAN HEART MAKES ROOM FOR THE FRUIT OF THE SPIRIT

Think back to yesterday's study.

Love.

Joy.

Peace.

Longsuffering.

Gentleness.

Goodness.

Faith.

Meekness.

Temperance.

What happens when bitterness begins losing its grip?

There is more room for love.

What happens when we surrender constant worry?

We begin learning to rest in God's peace.

What happens when pride is humbled?

Meekness begins growing.

What happens when we stop allowing every emotion to control our actions?

Self-control begins developing.

AS WE SURRENDER WHAT DOESN'T BELONG, WE MAKE ROOM FOR GOD'S WORK IN OUR HEARTS.

✝️ 9. GOD ISN'T ASKING YOU TO FIX YOUR HEART WITHOUT HIM

This is where I want us to be careful.

We can turn today's study into another list of things we have to accomplish.

“Be more patient.”

“Stop worrying.”

“Forgive everybody.”

“Have more faith.”

“Control your temper.”

“Be a better Christian.”

And before long, we're exhausted.

But David's prayer wasn't:

“LORD, WATCH ME CREATE A CLEAN HEART.”

It was:

“CREATE IN ME A CLEAN HEART, O GOD.”

He knew he needed God to do what he could not do on his own.

Yes, we have choices to make.

Yes, we must repent and obey.

But lasting spiritual transformation comes through the work of God within us.

WE SURRENDER. GOD TRANSFORMS.

🛡️ 10. WHAT HAVE WE LEARNED THIS WEEK?

Let's look back over our study of the Breastplate of Righteousness.

MONDAY — WHAT IS RIGHTEOUSNESS?

Our righteousness comes through Jesus Christ, not our own goodness.

TUESDAY — GUARD YOUR HEART

Not everything deserves access to our hearts. We can forgive while maintaining wise boundaries.

WEDNESDAY — LIVING DIFFERENTLY

Grace doesn't only forgive us. It begins changing the way we live.

THURSDAY — WHEN WE SIN

Don't hide from God. Confess, repent, receive His forgiveness, and keep walking with Jesus.

FRIDAY — CHOOSE INTEGRITY

Live the same faith privately that you profess publicly.

SATURDAY — THE FRUIT OF A CHANGED LIFE

When the Holy Spirit is working within us, His fruit should become visible in our lives.

SUNDAY — CREATE IN ME A CLEAN HEART

Bring everything back to God and ask Him to continue His work in you.

❤️ LORD, START WITH ME.

💜 TODAY'S REFLECTION QUESTIONS

Take some quiet time with the Lord and honestly consider these questions.

Have I been more focused on what others need to change than what God wants to change in me?

Is there bitterness, pride, jealousy, fear, or unforgiveness taking up space in my heart?

Am I hiding something I need to confess?

Have I confused a wounded heart with a sinful heart?

Is there something God has been asking me to release?

Have I lost some of the joy I once experienced in my walk with Jesus?

What fruit of the Spirit do I see growing in my life?

Am I allowing God's Word to search me, or only using it to correct others?

What would it look like to surrender my whole heart to God today?

Can I sincerely pray, “Lord, start with me”?

🙏 TODAY'S PRAYER

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for another beautiful Sunday.

Thank You for Your mercy, Your grace, and Your faithfulness.

Lord, today I come before You with David's prayer:

Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.

Search me, Father.

Show me anything that doesn't belong in my heart.

If bitterness has taken root, help me release it.

If pride has been growing, humble me.

If fear has been controlling my decisions, strengthen my faith.

If I've been holding onto unforgiveness, help me surrender it to You.

If I've allowed sin into my life, give me courage to confess and repent.

And Lord, if my heart is simply tired and wounded, hold me close and help me heal.

Restore the joy of my salvation.

Renew my desire to study Your Word.

Renew my prayer life.

Renew my love for others.

Renew my willingness to obey.

Help me stop looking at everything everybody else needs to change and allow You to begin with me.

Thank You for the righteousness I have through Jesus Christ.

Help me wear the Breastplate of Righteousness faithfully.

May my heart remain tender toward You, and may my life produce fruit that brings glory to Your name.

In Jesus' precious name,

Amen.

Today, before or after church, take a few quiet minutes alone with God.

Imagine your heart as a home.

What have you allowed to move in?

What have you allowed to stay?

What needs to be removed?

What needs to be restored?

MY HEART CLEANING

1. LORD, HELP ME RELEASE…

2. LORD, HELP ME MAKE MORE ROOM FOR…

3. ONE STEP I WILL TAKE TODAY…

Copy my heart-cleaning reflection

Then pray Psalm 51:10 aloud:

“Create in me a clean heart, O God; and renew a right spirit within me.”

And remember:

JESUS DOESN'T JUST WANT A ROOM IN YOUR HEART. HE DESERVES THE WHOLE HOUSE.

🌟 TODAY'S ENCOURAGEMENT

Friend, maybe this week has shown you some things you need to work on.

Don't become discouraged.

That's one of the beautiful things about studying God's Word.

Sometimes it comforts us.

Sometimes it corrects us.

Sometimes it reveals something we didn't realize was growing in our hearts.

And sometimes it reminds us that we are still a work in progress.

But God isn't finished.

THE SAME GOD WHO SAVED YOU IS STILL WORKING IN YOU.

You don't have to pretend.

You don't have to hide.

You don't have to carry everything alone.

Bring your whole heart to Jesus.

The good.

The wounded.

The tired.

The struggling.

The parts that still need changing.

And pray:

“LORD, HERE I AM. START WITH ME.”

🌻 CLOSING THOUGHT

I want to leave you with this today.

We can spend our whole lives trying to change the people around us.

We can point out everything they're doing wrong.

We can explain what they need to do differently.

We can pray that God will change their attitudes, their words, and their choices.

But what if today we simply stopped and said:

“LORD, WHAT ABOUT ME?”

What if we allowed Him to search our hearts?

What if we surrendered the bitterness?

What if we released the pride?

What if we confessed the hidden sin?

What if we allowed Him to heal the wounds we've been carrying?

What if we asked Him to restore our joy?

Friend, revival doesn't have to begin with a crowd.

It can begin with one person sincerely surrendering to God.

And today, that person can be you.

❤️ CREATE IN ME A CLEAN HEART, O GOD.

🛡️ RENEW A RIGHT SPIRIT WITHIN ME.

Walking Into the World With the Peace of Jesus

Ephesians 6:15 (KJV)

“And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace;”

Tomorrow we'll begin learning about the next piece of the armor: our feet shod with the preparation of the Gospel of Peace.

We'll talk about carrying the peace of Jesus into a troubled world, being ready to share the Gospel, and allowing our faith to guide where we walk.

Until tomorrow:

Let God search your heart.

Surrender what doesn't belong.

Receive His forgiveness.

Allow Him to restore your joy.

Keep the Breastplate of Righteousness in place.

And get ready to walk in His peace.
