🍂 “When You Miss the Life You Used to Have”
📖 Today's Scripture — KJV
"God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble."
— Psalm 46:1
🌿 Good Morning, Sweet Friends!
As I sit here with my morning coffee, my heart is thinking about something we don't always talk about when it comes to grief.
Sometimes we aren't just missing someone we love.
We're missing the life we had when they were here.
Maybe you miss the days when your whole family gathered around the dinner table.
Maybe you miss hearing Momma's voice on the telephone.
Maybe you miss having Daddy there to ask for advice.
Maybe you miss waking up beside your husband or wife.
Maybe you miss watching your child grow, hearing their laughter, and dreaming about all the wonderful things their future would hold.
Sometimes we look around at our lives today and realize just how much has changed.
The house feels different.
Family gatherings feel different.
Holidays feel different.
Even we feel different.
And sometimes, deep in our hearts, we whisper:
"Lord, I just wish things could be the way they used to be."
Sweet friend, if that is where your heart is this morning, I want you to know something.
God understands that you are grieving more than a goodbye. You are grieving the life you thought you would still be living.
đź’ś Grief Changes More Than Our Circumstances
When someone we love dies, there are changes we expect.
We know we won't see them walk through the door.
We know we won't hear their voice on the telephone.
We know their chair will be empty.
But there are other changes we don't always anticipate.
The traditions that no longer feel the same.
The plans that will never happen.
The family pictures that will always be missing someone.
The milestones they should have been here to celebrate.
And sometimes, the person we used to be before grief entered our lives.
I know that feeling.
There are days when I think about my Momma and wish I could tell her everything that has happened in my life.
I think about my sweet Michael and all the milestones I wish he could have experienced.
There are conversations I wish we could have.
Memories I wish we could make.
And moments when I simply wish life had turned out differently.
But through it all, I have learned something precious.
Even when life changes in ways we never wanted, God's love for us remains the same.
🌷 It's Okay to Miss Who You Used to Be
Sometimes grief changes our personalities.
Maybe you used to be the person who laughed easily.
Maybe you loved going places.
Maybe you were always planning something.
Maybe you never worried much about tomorrow.
Then loss came, and suddenly the world felt different.
You became more cautious.
More emotional.
Perhaps quieter.
Maybe you found yourself struggling with things that once came easily.
And sometimes you wonder:
"Will I ever feel like myself again?"
Friend, you may never be exactly the person you were before your loss.
But that does not mean your life can never be beautiful again.
God can help you discover strength you didn't know you had.
He can give you compassion for others who are hurting.
He can open doors to new friendships, new opportunities, and new ways to serve Him.
Your life may look different, but different does not mean God is finished with you.
🕊️ God Doesn't Ask Us to Pretend Everything Is Fine
I love Psalm 62:8:
"Trust in him at all times; ye people, pour out your heart before him: God is a refuge for us. Selah."
Notice those words:
"Pour out your heart before him."
God isn't asking us to hide our sorrow.
He isn't asking us to pretend we understand everything.
He isn't asking us to put on a smile when our hearts are breaking.
He invites us to bring it all to Him.
The sadness.
The disappointment.
The questions.
The memories.
Even the frustration over how much life has changed.
You can tell God:
"Lord, I miss my family the way it used to be."
"Lord, I miss having someone to share my days with."
"Lord, I miss the future I thought we would have."
"Lord, I don't understand why things happened this way."
And then you can simply pray:
"Father, help me learn how to live the life that is before me while treasuring the life I had."
He hears those prayers.
🍂 You Can Treasure Yesterday Without Losing Today
One of the most difficult things about grief is learning how to embrace today when our hearts are still longing for yesterday.
But I want to encourage you this morning.
You don't have to choose between the two.
You can remember the family gatherings of years gone by while creating new traditions.
You can treasure the photographs of your loved one while taking new pictures with the people who are still here.
You can miss the way life used to be while thanking God for the blessings He continues to give you.
You can talk about your loved one, tell their stories, and keep their memory alive.
And you can still laugh.
Still dream.
Still make plans.
Still love.
Still serve God.
Moving forward does not mean your loved one becomes part of a forgotten past. Their love can remain part of the life you are living today.
🌸 Don't Miss the People Who Are Still Here
There is something else I want us to think about today.
Sometimes we become so focused on the people we wish were still here that we unintentionally overlook the precious people God has placed around us.
Our children.
Our grandchildren.
Our spouses.
Our siblings.
Our friends.
Our church families.
The people who still want to make memories with us.
Friend, we cannot go back and relive yesterday.
But we can make today count.
Make the phone call.
Plan the family dinner.
Visit someone.
Take the photograph.
Listen to the story.
Give the hug.
Say "I love you."
And don't wait for a special occasion.
One day, today's ordinary moments may become someone's most treasured memories.
✝️ The God Who Held You Then Is Holding You Now
Hebrews 13:8 reminds us:
"Jesus Christ the same yesterday, and to day, and for ever."
What a beautiful promise!
Our lives change.
Our families change.
Our circumstances change.
But Jesus never changes.
The same Savior who walked beside you during the happiest seasons of your life is walking beside you through the most difficult ones.
He hasn't abandoned you.
He hasn't forgotten you.
And He hasn't stopped loving you.
There may be days when you cannot understand the road ahead.
But you can trust the One who is leading you.
The life you once knew may have changed forever, but the God who loves you has not changed at all.
And through Jesus Christ, we have the beautiful promise of eternal life.
One day, for those who belong to Him, there will be no more death, no more sorrow, and no more painful goodbyes.
Until then, we keep walking by faith.
🙏 Thursday Morning Prayer
Heavenly Father,
This morning, I come before You with a heart full of love for every person walking through grief.
Lord, You know how much we miss the people who are no longer with us.
But You also know how much we sometimes miss the lives we had when they were here.
We miss the family gatherings.
The familiar voices.
The laughter.
The ordinary routines.
The plans we made.
And the futures we imagined.
Father, sometimes it is difficult to accept how much our lives have changed.
Please help us.
When we find ourselves longing for yesterday, comfort our hearts.
When we feel uncertain about tomorrow, remind us that You are already there.
When we miss the people we used to be, help us discover who You are calling us to become.
Teach us to treasure our memories without allowing sorrow to steal every blessing of today.
Help us love the people who are still here.
Give us courage to make new memories.
And remind us that continuing to live does not mean forgetting those we love.
Lord, I especially pray for the parent missing a child, the widow or widower missing a spouse, the adult child missing Momma or Daddy, and every person facing another day with an empty place in their heart.
Wrap Your loving arms around them.
Give them peace.
Give them strength.
And remind them that they are never walking alone.
Thank You for Jesus.
Thank You for Your unchanging love.
And thank You for the hope of Heaven.
In Jesus' precious Name,
Amen.

đź’ś Remember Yesterday, Treasure Today
Today, I want you to reflect on three things.
🍂 1. SOMETHING I MISS
Write down one thing about your life before your loss that you deeply miss.
Maybe it is Sunday dinners, morning conversations, or a family tradition.
🌷 2. SOMETHING I STILL HAVE
Think about one blessing God has given you today.
Perhaps it is your family, a dear friend, your church, or simply another beautiful morning.
🕊️ 3. SOMETHING I CAN DO TODAY
Choose one small way to create a new memory.
Call someone.
Have coffee together.
Visit family.
Take a fall drive.
Share a story about your loved one.
Then pray:
"Lord, thank You for the beautiful life I once knew. Help me recognize the blessings in the life You have given me today."
đź’ś Let's Remember Them Together
Today, I'd love for our comments to become a place where we can share beautiful memories.
What is one thing about your life before your loss that you miss the most?
Maybe it's sitting around the kitchen table with Momma.
Maybe it's hearing Daddy laugh.
Maybe it's having your spouse beside you at church.
Maybe it's watching your child enjoy the little things in life.
Share their name and a memory if you feel comfortable.
Let's remind one another that we aren't alone in missing the people and the moments that made our lives beautiful.
