đ âWhen Grief Is Filled With âIf OnlyâŚââ
đ Todayâs Scripture â KJV
âCasting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.â
â 1 Peter 5:7
đż Good Morning, Sweet Friends!
There are two little words that can become very heavy after someone we love dies:
âIf onlyâŚâ
If only I had called more.
If only I had stayed longer.
If only I had known that would be our last conversation.
If only I hadn't said that.
If only I had said âI love youâ one more time.
If only I had taken more pictures.
If only we had made that trip.
If only I had noticed something sooner.
If only I could go back and change that day.
Grief has a way of taking moments from our past and replaying them over and over.
And sometimes we begin judging yesterday with information we only have today.
Sweet friend, if you've been carrying an âif onlyâ in your heart, I want to gently remind you:
God does not want regret to become the place where you live.
You cannot rewrite yesterday.
But you can place yesterday into God's hands.
đ You Didn't Know It Would Be the Last Time
One of the hardest things about loss is realizing how many âlast timesâ looked completely ordinary when they happened.
The last phone call.
The last hug.
The last Christmas.
The last meal together.
The last time they walked through your front door.
The last time you heard them laugh.
If we had known, we probably would have held on longer.
We would have listened more carefully.
Taken another photograph.
Asked another question.
Said another âI love you.â
But we didn't know.
And we cannot punish ourselves for not knowing what only God knew.
You were living an ordinary day.
You didn't realize it would someday become a precious memory.
Give yourself grace.
đˇ Don't Let One Moment Rewrite an Entire Relationship
Maybe your last conversation wasn't perfect.
Maybe there were disagreements.
Maybe something was left unresolved.
Maybe you wish you had handled something differently.
Remember this:
One moment does not define an entire lifetime of love.
Your relationship was bigger than one conversation.
Bigger than one disagreement.
Bigger than one missed phone call.
Bigger than one decision.
Think about all the other moments.
The birthdays.
The laughter.
The hugs.
The meals.
The ordinary afternoons.
The holidays.
The inside jokes.
The times you showed up.
The prayers.
The love.
Don't allow one painful memory to erase a thousand beautiful ones.
đď¸ Some Things Were Never in Your Control
Grief can make us believe we should have somehow prevented what happened.
We replay events and think:
âWhat could I have done differently?â
Sometimes there were things we could not control.
We couldn't control every illness.
Every accident.
Every decision another person made.
Every circumstance.
Every outcome.
There are questions we may carry for a lifetime.
But there comes a point when we have to place what we cannot change into God's hands.
Not because it doesn't matter.
Not because it doesn't hurt.
But because carrying guilt over something we could not control will never change yesterday.
It will only steal today's peace.
đ What Would Your Loved One Say to You?
Think about the person you're missing.
If they could sit beside you for five minutes and hear you blaming yourself over and over, what would they say?
Would Momma want you carrying guilt for the rest of your life?
Would Daddy want you replaying one mistake?
Would your spouse want every future day covered in regret?
Would your child want you to stop living because you're wondering what you could have done differently?
I imagine love would say:
âPlease remember all the good too.â
Remember the laughter.
Remember the hugs.
Remember the love.
Remember the life.
đ Turn âIf Onlyâ Into âI'm Thankfulâ
We may never completely stop having âif onlyâ thoughts.
But when they come, we can gently redirect our hearts.
Instead of:
âIf only I had one more dayâŚâ
Try:
âLord, thank You for the days I did have.â
Instead of:
âIf only I had taken more picturesâŚâ
Try:
âThank You for the pictures and memories I still have.â
Instead of:
âIf only I could hear their voiceâŚâ
Try:
âThank You that I still remember what their voice sounded like.â
Instead of:
âIf only things had been differentâŚâ
Pray:
âLord, help me trust You with the things I cannot change.â
Gratitude doesn't erase regret.
But it can keep regret from becoming the only thing we remember.
đ¸ Let Regret Teach You How to Love Today
There is something beautiful we can do with the lessons grief has taught us.
We can love the people who are still here differently.
If you wish you'd called someone moreâ
make the call today.
If you wish you'd taken more picturesâ
take the picture today.
If you wish you'd said âI love youâ moreâ
say it today.
If you wish you'd forgiven quickerâ
forgive today.
If you wish you'd spent more time togetherâ
make time today.
We cannot change yesterday.
But we can allow yesterday to teach us how precious today really is.
âď¸ Give God What You Cannot Go Back and Fix
There may be things in your past you genuinely regret.
If there is something you need to bring before God, bring it.
Confess it.
Talk to Him about it.
Receive His forgiveness.
And then stop returning to the courtroom in your mind to retry a case you've already placed before the Lord.
Romans 8:1 tells us:
âThere is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ JesusâŚâ
Jesus didn't go to Calvary so you could spend the rest of your life chained to yesterday.
Give Him the regret.
Let Him help you carry the memory differently.
đ Wednesday Morning Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Today I pray for the grieving heart carrying the heavy words:
âIf only.â
You know the conversations we replay.
The things we wish we'd said.
The moments we wish we could change.
The questions that still trouble us.
The things we wish we had known.
Lord, help us stop judging yesterday with information we only have today.
Where we truly made mistakes, help us bring them to You and receive Your forgiveness.
Where we are carrying responsibility for things beyond our control, help us release it.
Remind us that one imperfect moment does not erase a lifetime of love.
Bring the beautiful memories back to the front of our minds.
Help us remember the laughter.
The ordinary days.
The hugs.
The conversations.
The blessings.
And teach us to use what grief has taught us to love the people who are still here more intentionally.
Help us make the call.
Take the picture.
Give the hug.
Forgive quickly.
Say âI love you.â
And treasure today.
Thank You for Jesus, for grace, for forgiveness, and for the hope of Heaven.
In Jesus' precious Name,
Amen.
đť Wednesday Grief Support Challenge
đ FROM âIF ONLYâ TO âTHANK YOUâ
Take a piece of paper today.
Write:
âIf onlyâŚâ
Finish the sentence with something you've been carrying.
Then underneath it write:
âBut today, I thank God forâŚâ
Find one beautiful memory connected to that person.
Then finish with:
âBecause of what grief has taught me, today I willâŚâ
Maybe:
đ Call someone.
đˇ Take the picture.
đď¸ Forgive.
đ Spend time with family.
đ Pray with someone.
â¤ď¸ Say âI love you.â
Let yesterday teach you to treasure today rather than steal it.
đ Let's Remember With Love
If you feel comfortable, instead of sharing a regret today, let's share something we're thankful for.
Finish this sentence:
âI'm thankful my loved one and I got to ______ together.â
Maybe you traveled.
Cooked.
Went fishing.
Sat on the porch.
Attended church.
Raised children.
Drank morning coffee.
Laughed until you cried.
Or simply shared ordinary life.
Let's fill today's comments with gratitude for the time we were given.
đ¤ Need Prayer?
If guilt or regret has become a heavy part of your grief, please don't carry it silently.
We would be honored to pray with you.
Simply write:
âI'm struggling with âif only.â Please pray for me.â

đ Agape Love Wednesday Reminder đ
DON'T LET âIF ONLYâ STEAL âTHANK YOU.â
You cannot go back and change yesterday.
But you can thank God for the love you shared and allow what you've learned to change how you live today.
đ Release what you cannot change.
đ Remember the whole story.
đˇ Treasure the beautiful moments.
đď¸ Give yourself grace.
âď¸ Give yesterday to God.
âYou cannot rewrite yesterday, but with God's grace, yesterday does not have to write the rest of your story.â
