đż ABIDE IN THE VINE
Apart From Jesus, We Can Do Nothing
October Theme: The Fruit of the SpiritGrowing in Grace ⢠Rooted in Christ ⢠Bearing Fruit for His Glory
đ TODAYâS THEME SCRIPTURE
âI am the vine, ye are the branches: He that abideth in me, and I in him, the same bringeth forth much fruit: for without me ye can do nothing.âJohn 15:5 (KJV)
â GOOD MORNING & HAPPY FRIDAY, BIBLE STUDY FAMILY!
Yesterday we began our October study by asking:
âWhat is growing in my life?â
Today, I want us to ask an even deeper question:
đż âWHAT AM I CONNECTED TO?â
Jesus gives us a beautiful picture in John 15.
He is the Vine.
We are the branches.
And spiritual fruit comes from remaining connected to Him.
Think about a branch that has been cut from a grapevine.
For a little while, it may still look healthy.
The leaves may remain green.
From a distance, nothing may appear wrong.
But eventually the leaves begin to wither because the branch has been separated from its source of life.
Friend, Jesus is teaching us something important.
WE CANNOT PRODUCE LASTING SPIRITUAL FRUIT APART FROM HIM.
We can try harder.
We can promise ourselves weâre going to be more patient.
We can tell ourselves to stop worrying.
We can decide weâre going to love difficult people.
We can work on controlling our temper.
And discipline certainly has a place in the Christian life.
But the Fruit of the Spirit isnât simply the result of trying harder to become a nicer person.
It grows as we abide in Christ and yield ourselves to the work of the Holy Spirit.
đż WHAT DOES IT MEAN TO ABIDE?
To abide means to remain, continue, dwell, or stay.
Jesus isnât meant to be someone we visit for an hour on Sunday and then leave behind until the following week.
We abide in Him daily.
đ We spend time in His Word.
đ We talk with Him in prayer.
â¤ď¸ We obey what He teaches.
đż We depend upon Him instead of ourselves.
âď¸ We allow Him to correct and prune us.
đŁ We follow Him in our everyday choices.
Abiding isnât about having one emotional spiritual moment.
Itâs about developing a daily walk with Jesus.
đ FRUIT IS THE RESULTâNOT THE ROOT
Sometimes we become so focused on the fruit that we forget the root.
We say:
âI need more patience.â
âI need more joy.â
âI need more peace.â
âI need more self-control.â
Those are good desires.
But maybe we need to begin by asking:
âAm I spending enough time with Jesus?â
Because the closer we walk with Him, the more opportunity His Word has to shape our hearts.
And when our hearts begin changing, our responses begin changing too.
BEFORE YOU WORRY ABOUT PRODUCING MORE FRUIT, MAKE SURE YOUâRE STAYING CLOSE TO THE VINE.
â JESUS WANTS TO BE PART OF YOUR ORDINARY DAY
Sometimes we think spending time with God has to be complicated.
It doesnât.
Invite Him into the ordinary moments.
Talk to Him while youâre drinking your morning coffee.
Pray while youâre driving.
Read a passage of Scripture before the busyness begins.
Thank Him when something good happens.
Ask for wisdom before responding when someone frustrates you.
Turn to Him when worry begins.
Pray for someone when their name comes to mind.
Friend, walking with Jesus isnât limited to church.
JESUS WANTS TO BE PART OF MONDAY MORNING, FRIDAY AFTERNOON, AND EVERY ORDINARY MOMENT IN BETWEEN.
đ CHECK YOUR CONNECTION
Hereâs something for us to think about today.
We become concerned very quickly when our phones lose connection.
đ We start looking for Wi-Fi.
We move around trying to find a signal.
We restart the phone.
We check the router.
We immediately notice when something isnât connected!
But spiritually, we can sometimes go days without noticing that weâve become distracted from Jesus.
Our Bibles stay closed.
Prayer becomes rushed.
Our minds become filled with everything else.
Then we wonder why our patience is disappearing.
Why worry is increasing.
Why our attitudes are changing.
Why we feel spiritually dry.
Friend, when you notice the fruit strugglingâ
CHECK THE CONNECTION.
Return to Jesus.
Open His Word.
Pray.
Listen.
Obey.
Abide.
đą DONâT COMPARE YOUR FRUIT
And remember what we talked about yesterday.
Donât spend October comparing your spiritual growth with somebody elseâs.
One tree may be further along than another.
One believer may have walked with Jesus for forty years while another has only recently begun.
We can encourage one another without competing with one another.
Your question isnât:
âAm I growing faster than them?â
Your question is:
âAM I STAYING CLOSE TO JESUS AND ALLOWING HIM TO GROW ME?â
đ TODAYâS PRAYER
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for another beautiful day.
Thank You for Jesus, the True Vine.
Lord, help me abide in Christ.
When life becomes busy, remind me not to neglect my time with You.
Give me a hunger for Your Word.
Help me become more faithful in prayer.
Show me anything that is pulling my heart away from You.
Teach me to depend upon You instead of trying to do everything in my own strength.
Father, produce spiritual fruit in my life.
Let my words, attitudes, choices, and actions show that I have been spending time with Jesus.
Keep me rooted.
Keep me growing.
Keep me close to the Vine.
In Jesusâ precious name,
Amen. đ
đż TODAYâS GROWTH CHALLENGE
Set aside 15 quiet minutes with Jesus today.
No scrolling.
No television.
No distractions.
đ Read John 15:1â8Â slowly.
đ Pray.
âď¸ Then write down your answer to these three questions:
What has been distracting me from Jesus?
Where do I most need spiritual growth?
What is one change I can make to spend more time abiding in Christ?
Then simply pray:
âLORD, KEEP ME CLOSE TO THE VINE.â
đ TODAYâS QUESTION
Be honest with yourself:
What most often distracts you from spending time with Jesus?
Busyness?
Your phone?
Work?
Worry?
Television?
Exhaustion?
Something else?
Identifying the distraction can be the first step toward making a change.
đ SCRIPTURE TO REMEMBER
âAbide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit of itself, except it abide in the vine; no more can ye, except ye abide in me.âJohn 15:4 (KJV)
đť CLOSING THOUGHT
Friend, you donât have to force yourself to become everything God wants you to be overnight.
Stay close to Jesus.
Read His Word.
Talk with Him.
Listen.
Obey.
Let Him prune what needs to go.
And allow the Holy Spirit to work within you.
Because a healthy branch doesnât produce fruit by worrying about fruit all day.
đż IT STAYS CONNECTED TO THE VINE.
And in timeâ
đ THE FRUIT BEGINS TO GROW.
Stay rooted. Stay connected. Stay close to Jesus. đđżđ

đ TOMORROW â SATURDAY, OCTOBER 3
đł ROOTED AND GROUNDED
Building a Life That Can Bear Fruit
Tomorrow weâll talk about something people rarely see but every healthy tree desperately needs:
ROOTS.
Because before there can be lasting fruit above the ground, there must be healthy roots beneath it.
Have a beautifully blessed Friday, Bible Study Family!
God is so, so good! đđđâď¸
