šŸ—šŸ„” Sunday Homestyle Smothered Chicken & Buttermilk Mashed PotatoesĀ šŸ„”šŸ—

Good Sunday morning, friends! šŸ¤ ā¤ļø

Sundays call for something warm, comforting, and made for gathering around the table. Today's recipe is an old-fashioned country supper—tender seasoned chicken smothered in a rich homemade onion gravy and served over creamy buttermilk mashed potatoes.

This is the kind of meal that fills the house with a wonderful aroma while everyone is getting home from church. Add green beans, biscuits, and sweet tea, and you've got a Sunday dinner worthy of bringing the whole family together!

šŸ— For the Smothered Chicken

  • 6 bone-in, skin-on chicken thighs

  • 1 cup all-purpose flour

  • 1 teaspoon seasoned salt

  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder

  • 1 teaspoon onion powder

  • 1 teaspoon smoked paprika

  • ½ teaspoon black pepper

  • 3 tablespoons vegetable oil

  • 2 tablespoons butter

  • 1 large sweet onion, thinly sliced

  • 3 cloves garlic, minced

  • 2½ cups chicken broth

  • ½ cup heavy cream

  • 1 teaspoon Worcestershire sauce

  • ½ teaspoon dried thyme

šŸ„” For the Buttermilk Mashed Potatoes

  • 3 pounds Yukon Gold or russet potatoes, peeled and cubed

  • ½ cup warm buttermilk

  • 5 tablespoons butter

  • ¼ cup sour cream

  • Salt and black pepper to taste

šŸ”„ Let's Get Cooking!

1ļøāƒ£ Season that chicken.Mix the flour, seasoned salt, garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, and black pepper. Lightly coat each chicken thigh in the seasoned flour. Save about 3 tablespoons of the flour mixture for your gravy.

2ļøāƒ£ Get out the cast iron!Heat the oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Brown the chicken for about 4–5 minutes on each sideĀ until beautifully golden. Remove and set aside.

3ļøāƒ£ Cook those onions low and slow.Reduce the heat to medium. Add the butter and onions and cook for about 8–10 minutes, until soft and golden. Add the garlic and cook for another minute.

4ļøāƒ£ Make that country gravy.Sprinkle 3 tablespoons of the reserved seasoned flour over the onions. Stir and cook for about a minute.

Slowly whisk in the chicken broth. Add the Worcestershire sauce and thyme and simmer until the gravy begins to thicken.

5ļøāƒ£ Smother that chicken!Return the chicken to the skillet, nestling each piece down into the gravy.

Cover and simmer gently for approximately 25–30 minutes, or until the chicken reaches at least 165°FĀ internally.

6ļøāƒ£ Make it creamy.During the final 5 minutes, stir the heavy cream into the gravy around the chicken. Taste and adjust the seasoning.

šŸ„” Now for Those Mashed Potatoes!

Boil the potatoes in salted water until fork-tender, about 15–20 minutes.

Drain well and return them to the warm pot for a minute to allow excess moisture to evaporate.

Add the butter, warm buttermilk, and sour cream.

Mash until creamy, then season with salt and pepper.

Now spoon those potatoes onto a plate, place a piece of chicken right on top, and ladle that onion gravyĀ over everything.

Oh my goodness! That's Sunday dinner!Ā šŸ˜‹

⭐ MawMaw's Kitchen Secret

Want gravy that tastes like it's been simmering in Grandma's kitchen all afternoon?

Let those onions get really goldenĀ before making the gravy. Don't rush them! Their natural sweetness gives the gravy wonderful depth.

And add just a tiny splash of buttermilk to your gravy at the end for a little extra country flavor.

šŸ½ļø Complete the Sunday Table

I'd serve this with Southern green beans with bacon, buttered corn, sliced garden tomatoes, homemade biscuits with honey butter, and a pitcher of sweet tea.

šŸŒ And for dessert...

Old-Fashioned Banana Pudding!

Layers of vanilla wafers, bananas, creamy vanilla pudding, and whipped topping make the perfect ending to this country Sunday dinner.

ā¤ļø Sunday Chuckwagon Encouragement

There's something special about a Sunday table.

It isn't about fancy dishes or whether everything turned out perfectly.

It's about who is sitting around it.

It's holding hands and thanking God for the meal. It's hearing children and grandchildren laugh. It's making enough food that there's always room for one more plate.

And sometimes it's remembering the people who once sat at our tables and thanking God for every meal and memory we were blessed to share with them.

So today, don't worry about creating the perfect Sunday.

Create a meaningful one.

Gather your people. Invite someone who may be alone. Put another biscuit on the table. Tell the old stories again. And before everyone gets up from their chairs, take a moment to realize:

This right here is a blessing.Ā ā¤ļø

šŸ“– Sunday Scripture

"O give thanks unto the LORD, for he is good: for his mercy endureth for ever."

— Psalm 107:1 (KJV)
