Daily Bible Study – 30-Day Devotional Series: Taming Your TongueDate: May 21, 2025Day 1: The Power of Our Words
Scripture Focus:"Lying lips are abomination to the Lord: but they that deal truly are his delight."— Proverbs 12:22 (KJV)
"The Lord God hath given me the tongue of the learned, that I should know how to speak a word in season to him that is weary: he wakeneth morning by morning, he wakeneth mine ear to hear as the learned."— Isaiah 50:4 (KJV)
Going Deeper:Our words carry incredible weight—they can heal or they can harm. Proverbs 12:22 reminds us that dishonesty grieves the Lord, but truthfulness pleases Him. Honesty doesn’t just reflect integrity; it reflects God’s heart.
Isaiah 50:4 shifts the focus to the purpose of our speech. God desires that our words not only be true but also timely and healing. He wants to give us a “tongue of the learned,” a spirit-led sensitivity to speak life, encouragement, and wisdom to those who are weary.
Taming the tongue starts with surrendering it daily to God. It’s not just about holding back angry or dishonest words—it’s about learning how to use your voice for righteousness and restoration.
Word Study:
Lying lips (שָׂפָה שֶׁקֶר – śāp̄āh šeqer): Speech that is false, deceptive, or misleading.
Delight (רָצוֹן – rāṣôn): Favor, pleasure, what brings joy to God.
Tongue of the learned (לָשׁוֹן לִמּוּדִים – lāšôn limmûdîm): A trained or disciplined tongue; one instructed by God.
Discussion Questions:
What kind of words come out of your mouth most often—are they uplifting or damaging?
In what situations do you find it hardest to speak truth?
How has someone’s kind or wise word impacted you during a difficult time?
What would it look like for you to allow God to “train your tongue” this month?
Who in your life might need a word in season from you today?
Life Application:
Begin a “tongue check” journal. At the end of each day, write a few lines about how your words helped or hurt.
Ask the Holy Spirit each morning to guide your speech—especially when you feel pressure, stress, or frustration.
Share today’s scriptures with a friend who may be discouraged and offer a gentle, truthful word of encouragement.
Prayer:Lord,I surrender my tongue to You. Forgive me for careless, dishonest, or harsh words. Train my heart to love truth and teach my mouth to speak life. Give me wisdom to speak a word in season to the weary, and help me reflect Your delight through truth-filled speech. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
