Daily Bible Study – 30-Day Devotional Series: Taming Your TongueDate: May 22, 2025Day 2: Guarding Your Speech with Honor and Restraint

Scripture Focus:"And the angels which kept not their first estate, but left their own habitation, he hath reserved in everlasting chains under darkness unto the judgment of the great day."— Jude 1:6 (KJV)

"For thou, Lord, wilt bless the righteous; with favour wilt thou compass him as with a shield."— Psalm 5:12 (KJV)

"Let me not, I pray you, accept any man's person, neither let me give flattering titles unto man. For I know not to give flattering titles; in so doing my maker would soon take me away."— Job 32:21–22 (KJV)

Going Deeper:Day 2 takes us into the responsibility and weight of our words. Jude 1:6 shows how even angels were judged when they stepped out of their ordained place. This reminds us that there is accountability in every position—including how we speak. Our tongues must remain in submission to God’s will, not used carelessly or in ways that lead others away from truth.

Psalm 5:12 brings encouragement—we are surrounded by God’s favor when we walk in righteousness. When our speech is righteous, God becomes our defender and protector, encircling us with His presence.

Job 32:21–22 is a powerful challenge against manipulation and flattery. When we use our words to impress others or gain favor rather than honor God, we walk a dangerous line. Integrity in speech means we speak truthfully, without bias, pretense, or hidden agenda.

Word Study:

  • Flattering titles (כֶּנַע – kenaʿ): Overly smooth or insincere praise meant to gain favor.

  • Estate (ἀρχή – archē): Original place, authority, or principality.

  • Compass (סָבַב – sābab): To encircle, surround protectively like a shield.

Discussion Questions:

  1. Have you ever used your words to flatter or impress rather than to glorify God?

  2. How can Psalm 5:12 encourage you to speak righteously even when it's hard?

  3. What does it look like to guard your words like an assignment from Heaven?

  4. In what situations do you feel tempted to use your words to gain approval from others?

  5. How can you begin to speak with more honor, integrity, and spiritual restraint?

Life Application:

  • Reflect on conversations you’ve had recently—were your words sincere and honoring to God?

  • Ask the Lord to show you any place where your tongue has stepped outside of His will.

  • Write out Psalm 5:12 and keep it nearby today. Speak it aloud when you’re tempted to react in pride or fear.

Prayer:Lord,Help me to guard my tongue as a sacred trust. Keep me from flattering others for gain or speaking words that are outside of Your will. Let my speech be marked by truth, righteousness, and integrity. Surround me with Your favor like a shield and guide my mouth to honor You.In Jesus’ name, Amen.
