Day 45
THE SEED MAKES AN APPEARANCE
[Scheduled Reading: Obadiah, Jonah, Micah, Nahum, Habakkuk]
Bible’s “Big Picture,” from Genesis 3:15 - God’s promise of a Seed that will defeat the serpent one day.
God made the famous covenant - that he (Abraham) would become father of many nations.
Next he highlighted God’s covenant with David - the promise that David’s throne would endure forever.
Finally, in the day of Micah (during rules of Jotham, Ahaz, and Hezekiah), we have this golden prophecy:
“But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be the ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.” (Micah 5:2)
It’s a forecast of the coming Messiah. Christ the King. The baby from Bethlehem.
The prophets are full of sneak-previews of the coming Messiah.
Those who studied the prophet scrolls had this to look forward to. And those on the other side of history have had these prophecies to look backwards.
One of those backward-looking teachers was Matthew.
In his gospel account, Matthew referenced several prophets in his opening chapters: Isaiah, Jeremiah, Hosea….and Micah 5:2 (See Matthew 2:6).
We're right in the middle of the big picture!
