What would your family do if the electricity went out for several days?
What if there were a flood, tornado, hurricane, wildfire, winter storm, or another emergency?
Would everyone know where to go?
Would you have important phone numbers?
What about medications, pets, elderly family members, or someone with special needs?
The good news is that there are some wonderful FREE resources available to help your family prepare BEFORE an emergency happens.
🚨 1. READY.GOV — BUILD YOUR FAMILY EMERGENCY PLAN
Ready.gov provides FREE information to help families prepare for disasters and emergencies.
You can learn how to:
✅ Make a family emergency plan✅ Build an emergency supply kit✅ Prepare for power outages✅ Prepare for severe weather✅ Plan for children, seniors, pets and disabilities✅ Know what to do before, during and after different disasters

🎒 2. LEARN HOW TO BUILD AN EMERGENCY KIT
You don't have to purchase an expensive premade survival kit.
Start with what you already have and build it a little at a time.
Your emergency supplies may include:
💧 Water🥫 Nonperishable food🔦 Flashlights🔋 Extra batteries📻 Battery-powered or hand-crank radio🩹 First-aid supplies💊 Necessary medications📱 Phone chargers/power banks🧻 Personal-care items🐾 Pet supplies👶 Baby supplies if needed📄 Copies of important information

❤️ 3. AMERICAN RED CROSS — FREE PREPAREDNESS INFORMATION
The American Red Cross provides FREE information about preparing for emergencies such as:
🌪️ Tornadoes🌊 Floods🔥 Home fires❄️ Winter storms🌡️ Extreme heat🌀 Hurricanes⚡ Power outages
They also offer FREE emergency apps and preparedness information for families.

Did you know FEMA has a FREE app?
It can provide:
🚨 Weather and emergency alerts🏠 Disaster-preparedness information📍 Shelter information during disasters📋 Safety tips
This is one of those resources worth downloading BEFORE you need it.
👨👩👧👦 5. MAKE A FAMILY COMMUNICATION PLAN
Here's a simple question:
If everyone's phones stopped working normally during an emergency, would your family know what to do?
Choose:
🏠 A family meeting place near home📍 A second meeting place outside your neighborhood☎️ An out-of-town emergency contact👧 Who will pick up the children👵 Who will check on elderly relatives🐶 Who is responsible for pets
Write it down and make sure everyone has a copy.
🐾 6. DON'T FORGET YOUR PETS!
Your emergency plan should include your animals too.
Prepare:
🐕 Food💧 Water💊 Medications🦮 Leashes🏷️ Identification information📋 Vaccination/veterinary records🧺 Carrier when appropriate
If you have to leave quickly, you don't want to be figuring this out at the last minute.
📂 7. CREATE AN EMERGENCY DOCUMENT FOLDER
Keep important information together in a safe place.
Consider including copies of:
📋 Insurance information☎️ Emergency contacts💊 Medication lists🏥 Doctors' information🐾 Veterinary information📄 Important household documents
You may also want secure digital backups of important records.
🔥 8. MAKE A HOME FIRE ESCAPE PLAN
Every household should know:
🚪 At least two ways out when possible👨👩👧 Where everyone will meet outside🔥 How to get out safely🚒 To stay outside once they've escaped
Practice your plan with your family.
Children especially need to know what to do BEFORE an emergency happens.

Emergency preparedness looks different depending on where you live.
Learn which emergencies are most likely in YOUR community:
🌪️ Tornadoes🌀 Hurricanes🌊 Flooding❄️ Snow and ice🔥 Wildfires⚡ Severe thunderstorms🌡️ Extreme temperatures
Preparing for the emergencies most likely to affect your area is a great place to begin.
