🌿 TEMPERANCE — WHEN THE SPIRIT LEADS OUR CHOICES
Learning Self-Control Through the Holy Spirit
October Theme: The Fruit of the Spirit
📖 TODAY'S SCRIPTURE — Galatians 5:22–23 (KJV)
“But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law.”
☕ Good morning & Happy Friday, Bible Study Family! 💜
God is so, so good!
Yesterday we talked about having a humble heart and allowing Jesus to become greater in our lives.
Today, we're studying the final Fruit of the Spirit:
TEMPERANCE — SELF-CONTROL.
Now, this is one that can really step on our toes!
Have you ever said something in frustration and immediately wished you could take it back?
Have you ever made a decision because of how you felt in the moment, only to regret it later?
Maybe you've struggled with spending, eating, anger, procrastination, or simply knowing when to say no.
Friend, we've all had moments when our emotions or desires wanted to take the lead.
But here's what I want us to remember:
Just because we feel something doesn't mean we have to act on it.
🌻 SELF-CONTROL IS MORE THAN WILLPOWER
Proverbs 25:28 (KJV) says:
“He that hath no rule over his own spirit is like a city that is broken down, and without walls.”
Think about that!
A city without walls was vulnerable to attack.
In the same way, when we allow every emotion, temptation, or impulse to control our actions, we leave ourselves vulnerable to poor decisions.
But biblical temperance isn't simply trying harder.
It's learning to surrender our choices to the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
We still have responsibilities and decisions to make, but we don't have to depend on our own strength alone.
💜 SELF-CONTROL BEGINS WITH THE LITTLE THINGS
Sometimes we think self-control only applies to major temptations.
But it also shows up in everyday life.
🌿 Choosing not to participate in gossip.
❤️ Pausing before responding in anger.
🌻 Being responsible with our time and money.
🙏 Making time for prayer instead of allowing distractions to consume our day.
💜 Recognizing when we need rest instead of pushing ourselves beyond healthy limits.
🌷 Choosing words that encourage rather than wound.
Friend, those small decisions matter.
The choices we make every day help shape the habits we develop and the character we display.
🌿 WE DON'T HAVE TO OBEY EVERY FEELING
Galatians 5:16 (KJV) says:
“This I say then, Walk in the Spirit, and ye shall not fulfil the lust of the flesh.”
Our feelings are real, but they aren't always reliable guides.
We may feel angry, but we don't have to speak cruelly.
We may feel jealous, but we don't have to act unkindly.
We may feel discouraged, but we can still take a faithful step forward.
And when we make a mistake, we can confess it, seek forgiveness, and begin again.
Spiritual maturity isn't never experiencing temptation. It's learning to respond to temptation with God's help.
❤️ SELF-CONTROL ALSO MEANS KNOWING WHEN TO SAY NO
Not everything that demands our attention deserves our time.
Not every argument needs our participation.
Not every opportunity is right for us.
And not every desire needs to be satisfied immediately.
Sometimes the most faithful decision is a simple:
“No, that's not what God wants for me.”
Or:
“I need to pray before making that decision.”
Or even:
“I need to step away and calm down before I respond.”
Self-control doesn't mean we become perfect overnight.
It means we're willing to let the Holy Spirit continue changing us.
🙏 TODAY'S PRAYER
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for another beautiful Friday.
Lord, You know the areas of my life where I struggle with self-control.
Forgive me for the times I've allowed my emotions, frustrations, or desires to lead me in the wrong direction.
Help me pause before speaking, pray before making decisions, and seek Your wisdom in everything I do.
Teach me to be responsible with my time, my words, my resources, and the opportunities You've given me.
Give me strength to resist temptation and humility to admit when I've made a mistake.
Let the Fruit of the Spirit continue growing in my heart.
And above all, help my daily choices reflect my love for Jesus.
In His precious name,
Amen. 💜
🌻 TODAY'S TEMPERANCE CHALLENGE
Today, practice these three things:
🌿 PAUSE BEFORE REACTING.When something frustrates you, take a moment to pray before responding.
❤️ CHOOSE ONE HEALTHY HABIT.Make one intentional choice that honors God and supports your well-being.
🙏 SURRENDER ONE STRUGGLE.Identify an area where you need greater self-control and ask the Holy Spirit to help you grow.
Then pray:
“Lord, don't let my emotions lead my life. Help me follow Your Spirit.”
💬 QUESTION FOR OUR BIBLE STUDY FAMILY:
What is one practical way you've learned to practice self-control in your everyday life?
Maybe it's pausing before speaking, spending less time on your phone, praying before making decisions, or learning when to say no.
Share your encouragement in the comments! 💜
🌷 TODAY'S REMINDER
Friend, we won't always get everything right.
There will be days when our patience is tested.
Days when our emotions run high.
And days when we make choices we wish we could change.
But don't give up on growing.
Ask God for forgiveness when you stumble.
Learn from your mistakes.
And keep walking with Jesus.
Remember:
You don't have to act on every feeling.
You don't have to respond to every criticism.
You don't have to follow every temptation.
With the Holy Spirit's help, you can learn to make choices that honor God.
🌿 PAUSE BEFORE YOU REACT.
💜 PRAY BEFORE YOU DECIDE.
✝️ LET THE HOLY SPIRIT LEAD.
Because temperance isn't simply about controlling ourselves.
It's about surrendering our lives to the One who can transform our hearts.
Have a beautifully blessed Friday, Bible Study Family! 💜
