THE BELT OF TRUTH
WHAT IS TRUTH?
Everything Begins With God's Word
đź“– Theme Verse
“Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy word is truth.”— John 17:17 (KJV)
🌅 GOOD MORNING & HAPPY MONDAY!
Welcome to Week Two of our September Bible Study!
Last week we learned that spiritual battles are real—but we do not have to live afraid.
We learned:
🛡️ Put on the Whole Armor of God.⚔️ People are not our enemy.💪 Our strength comes from the Lord.🛡️ Having done all—we stand.📖 We must recognize the enemy's lies.✝️ Jesus has already overcome.
Now we're ready to begin examining the armor God has given us.
And isn't it interesting that the first piece Paul mentions is:
TRUTH.
“Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth...”— Ephesians 6:14 (KJV)
Before the breastplate.
Before the shoes.
Before the shield.
Before the helmet.
Before the sword.
TRUTH COMES FIRST.
Why?
Because if we don't know what is true, everything else becomes vulnerable.
đź“– TODAY'S SCRIPTURE READING
Ephesians 6:10–18John 17:14–19John 8:31–32John 14:1–6Psalm 119:89–1052 Timothy 3:14–17Proverbs 30:5–6
🛡️ WHY A BELT?
In Paul's day, a Roman soldier's belt wasn't simply decoration.
It helped secure his clothing and supported other pieces of equipment so that he could move freely and be prepared for battle.
Paul uses that familiar picture and says:
GIRD YOURSELF WITH TRUTH.
Truth holds things together.
Think about that spiritually.
If we don't know God's truth, how will we recognize a lie?
If we don't know what Scripture says, how will we know when Scripture is being twisted?
If we don't know God's character, how will we recognize false ideas about Him?
Truth gives stability to everything else.
✝️ SO WHAT IS TRUTH?
Our culture often says things like:
“That's your truth.”
“This is my truth.”
But feelings, experiences, and opinions can differ.
Biblical truth is not something we invent for ourselves.
Jesus prayed:
“Thy word is truth.”— John 17:17
And Jesus said:
“I am the way, the truth, and the life...”— John 14:6
Christian truth begins with:
GOD.
God determines truth.
God's Word reveals truth.
And Jesus Christ is the Truth.
📖 FEELINGS ARE REAL—BUT THEY AREN'T ALWAYS TRUE
This is important.
Your feelings matter.
If you're hurting, the hurt is real.
If you're afraid, the fear feels real.
If you're disappointed, the disappointment is real.
But feelings don't always accurately tell us what is true.
You may feel abandoned.
But God says:
“…I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”— Hebrews 13:5 (KJV)
You may feel unforgivable.
But Scripture says:
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins...”— 1 John 1:9 (KJV)
You may feel like God isn't listening.
But Scripture says:
“The eyes of the LORD are upon the righteous, and His ears are open unto their cry.”— Psalm 34:15 (KJV)
We don't deny our emotions.
We bring our emotions under the authority of God's truth.
🌿 GOD'S TRUTH DOESN'T CHANGE WITH CULTURE
Psalm 119:89 says:
“For ever, O LORD, Thy word is settled in heaven.”
Think about that.
Cultures change.
Popular opinions change.
Laws change.
Trends change.
Technology changes.
People change their minds.
But God's Word isn't waiting for society to decide whether it is still true.
His Word is settled.
We should always treat people with love, dignity, patience, and compassion.
But loving people does not require changing God's Word.
We don't rewrite Scripture to fit culture.
We allow Scripture to transform us.
⚔️ THE ENEMY ATTACKS TRUTH BECAUSE TRUTH BRINGS FREEDOM
Jesus said:
“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”— John 8:32 (KJV)
Yesterday we talked about victory.
Today we learn one of the ways God helps us walk in that victory:
TRUTH.
Lies produce bondage.
Truth produces freedom.
The enemy whispers:
“You'll always be this way.”
Truth says:
“…if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature...”— 2 Corinthians 5:17
The lie says:
“You're alone.”
Truth says:
“…I am with you alway...”— Matthew 28:20
The lie says:
“There is no hope.”
Truth says:
“Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing...”— Romans 15:13
Don't answer a lie with another opinion.
ANSWER IT WITH SCRIPTURE.
🛡️ KNOW THE WORD FOR YOURSELF
Friend, don't depend entirely upon someone else to tell you what the Bible says.
Listen to sermons.
Attend Bible study.
Read devotionals.
Learn from faithful teachers.
But also:
OPEN YOUR BIBLE.
Read it.
Study it.
Pray over it.
Ask questions.
Look at verses in context.
Compare Scripture with Scripture.
Don't believe something simply because:
A preacher said it.
A Facebook post said it.
A video went viral.
Someone said, “The Bible says...”
Check it.
Does the Bible actually say that?
God has given us His Word.
We should know it for ourselves.
đź’ś DON'T USE TRUTH AS A WEAPON AGAINST PEOPLE
This is especially important during a study on spiritual warfare.
God's truth is not permission to become harsh.
Ephesians 4:15 tells us to:
“…speak the truth in love...”
Truth without love can become cruel.
And what people sometimes call love without truth can become compromise.
Jesus perfectly demonstrated both:
GRACE AND TRUTH.
Our goal isn't to win arguments.
Our goal is to represent Christ.
Sometimes truth needs to be spoken boldly.
Sometimes gently.
Sometimes privately.
And sometimes the wisest response is simply to live faithfully and pray.
Ask God for wisdom.
🌻 TRUTH ALSO MEANS BEING HONEST WITH GOD
The Belt of Truth isn't only about recognizing false teaching.
Truth must also reach our own hearts.
Sometimes we hide behind:
“I'm fine.”
But God knows we're hurting.
Sometimes we say:
“I've forgiven them.”
But bitterness remains.
Sometimes we say:
“I'm trusting God.”
But secretly we're terrified.
Sometimes we point out everybody else's sin while refusing to examine our own hearts.
Psalm 139:23–24 says:
“Search me, O God, and know my heart: try me, and know my thoughts:And see if there be any wicked way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting.”
Truth begins with honesty before God.
Lord, show ME where I need to change.
đź“– GOD'S WORD IS A LAMP
Psalm 119:105 says:
“Thy word is a lamp unto my feet, and a light unto my path.”
Notice that a lamp doesn't necessarily illuminate the next ten miles.
It gives enough light for the next step.
Maybe you wish God would show you His entire plan.
But today He may simply be saying:
“Walk in the truth I've already shown you.”
Take today's step.
Obey today's instruction.
Trust Him with tomorrow.
đź’ś TODAY'S REFLECTION QUESTIONS
What do I use as my standard for truth?
Am I spending enough time in Scripture to recognize when something contradicts God's Word?
Have I allowed feelings to become more authoritative than truth?
Is there a lie about myself that I've been believing?
Do I check what people teach against Scripture?
Do I speak truth with love—or merely try to prove I'm right?
Is there an area where I need to become more honest with God?
What truth from Scripture do I need to stand upon today?
🙏 TODAY'S PRAYER
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for giving me Your Word.
In a world filled with voices, opinions, confusion, and changing ideas, help me remain anchored in Your truth.
Teach me Your Word.
Give me hunger for Scripture.
Give me wisdom and discernment.
When lies come, help me recognize them.
When my feelings contradict Your promises, help me bring my thoughts back to what You have said.
Keep me from twisting Scripture to fit what I want.
Instead, change my heart so that my life agrees with Your Word.
And Lord, help me speak truth with love.
Never let knowledge make me proud or harsh.
Make me more like Jesus.
Search my heart.
Show me where I need correction.
Lead me in Your truth.
Today I fasten the Belt of Truth and choose to stand upon Your Word.
In Jesus' precious name,
Amen.
🌼 TODAY'S ARMOR CHALLENGE
WHAT DOES GOD SAY?
Take a page in your journal and write:
GOD'S WORD IS TRUTH.
Now write down one statement you've been telling yourself lately.
Ask:
Is this actually true?
Then search Scripture for what God says about it.
Write:
❌ WHAT THE LIE SAYS:
đź“– WHAT GOD'S WORD SAYS:
🛡️ WHAT I CHOOSE TO BELIEVE:
Finish by writing:
I WILL BUILD MY LIFE ON GOD'S TRUTH, NOT MY FEELINGS.
đź“– THIS WEEK'S MEMORY VERSE
“Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy word is truth.”— John 17:17 (KJV)
Try memorizing it this week.
When confusion comes, remember:
THY WORD IS TRUTH.
🛡️ TODAY'S ARMOR CHECK
BELT OF TRUTH
Ask yourself:
🛡️ Am I reading God's Word?
🛡️ Am I checking what I hear against Scripture?
🛡️ Am I replacing lies with biblical truth?
🛡️ Am I being honest with God?
🛡️ Am I speaking truth in love?
🛡️ Is Jesus—not culture—shaping what I believe?
🌟 TODAY'S ENCOURAGEMENT
There are many voices competing for your attention.
Some will tell you:
Follow your feelings.
Others:
Follow the crowd.
Others:
Do whatever makes you happy.
But Jesus says:
FOLLOW ME.
When you're confused, return to the Word.
When you don't know what to believe, return to the Word.
When fear speaks, return to the Word.
When someone claims, “The Bible says...”
Return to the Word.
Don't build your life upon shifting sand.
Build it upon Jesus Christ and His truth.
🌻 CLOSING THOUGHT
Before a soldier moved into battle, his belt helped hold everything securely in place.
And spiritually:
TRUTH HOLDS THINGS TOGETHER.
When feelings shake you—
TIGHTEN THE BELT OF TRUTH.
When culture pressures you—
TIGHTEN THE BELT OF TRUTH.
When lies whisper—
TIGHTEN THE BELT OF TRUTH.
When you don't understand—
TIGHTEN THE BELT OF TRUTH.
Open your Bible.
Ask:
“WHAT HAS GOD SAID?”
Then stand there.
Because:
FEELINGS CHANGE.
CULTURE CHANGES.
PEOPLE CHANGE.
BUT THE WORD OF OUR GOD SHALL STAND FOR EVER.
