TRUTH VERSUS FEELINGS

When What You Feel Doesn't Match What God Says

đź“– Theme Verse

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. In all thy ways acknowledge Him, and He shall direct thy paths.”— Proverbs 3:5–6 (KJV)

🌅 GOOD MORNING, DEAR FRIENDS!

Have you ever known what the Bible says...

but still felt something completely different?

You know God says He is with you—

but you feel alone.

You know God says He hears prayer—

but you feel unheard.

You know God forgives—

but you still feel ashamed.

You know God is working—

but you feel like nothing is happening.

You know God says not to fear—

but your heart is still pounding.

So what do we do?

Do we pretend those feelings aren't there?

No.

Do we allow those feelings to determine what is true?

No.

We bring what we feel to God...

and then we allow His truth to lead us.

đź“– TODAY'S SCRIPTURE READING

Proverbs 3:1–8Psalm 42:1–11Psalm 56:1–4Jeremiah 17:5–10Philippians 4:4–92 Corinthians 5:7Hebrews 11:1–6John 17:17

đź’ś FEELINGS ARE NOT THE ENEMY

Sometimes Christians talk about emotions as though having strong feelings means we don't have faith.

But God created us with emotions.

Jesus experienced emotion.

He wept.

He had compassion.

He experienced sorrow.

He expressed righteous anger.

In Gethsemane, Jesus said:

“My soul is exceeding sorrowful, even unto death...”— Matthew 26:38 (KJV)

Feeling sadness doesn't make you faithless.

Feeling afraid doesn't automatically mean you don't trust God.

Feeling hurt doesn't mean you've failed spiritually.

FEELINGS ARE REAL EXPERIENCES.

But they were never meant to become our final authority.

🛡️ YOUR FEELINGS CAN SPEAK—BUT GOD'S WORD GETS THE FINAL WORD

Imagine your emotions sitting at a table.

Fear says:

“Something terrible is going to happen.”

Discouragement says:

“Nothing will ever change.”

Shame says:

“You'll always be your worst mistake.”

Loneliness says:

“Nobody cares.”

And then Truth enters the room.

Truth doesn't have to scream.

Truth simply says:

“WHAT HAS GOD SAID?”

That's what the Belt of Truth does.

It brings us back to something stronger than our changing emotions:

THE UNCHANGING WORD OF GOD.

🌿 DAVID TALKED TO HIS OWN SOUL

Psalm 42 gives us a beautiful example.

David asks:

“Why art thou cast down, O my soul? and why art thou disquieted in me?”

He acknowledges what he feels.

But then he speaks truth to himself:

“Hope thou in God...”— Psalm 42:11 (KJV)

I love this.

David doesn't say:

“I'm not sad.”

He essentially says:

“I AM TROUBLED—BUT I WILL STILL HOPE IN GOD.”

Sometimes faith means learning to preach truth to your own heart.

⚔️ FEAR SAYS ONE THING—FAITH ANSWERS WITH TRUTH

David also wrote:

“What time I am afraid, I will trust in Thee.”— Psalm 56:3 (KJV)

Notice he didn't say:

“I NEVER GET AFRAID.”

He said:

“WHEN I AM AFRAID...”

then:

“I WILL TRUST.”

That's powerful.

Faith isn't always the absence of fear.

Sometimes faith is choosing to trust God while your knees are still shaking.

✝️ WALK BY FAITH, NOT BY SIGHT

2 Corinthians 5:7 says:

“For we walk by faith, not by sight.”

There will be times when what you see doesn't look anything like what you've been praying for.

The door still looks closed.

The answer still hasn't arrived.

The situation still looks impossible.

The relationship still hasn't changed.

The future still seems uncertain.

Faith says:

“I DON'T HAVE TO UNDERSTAND EVERYTHING TO TRUST THE GOD WHO DOES.”

That is Proverbs 3:5:

“…lean not unto thine own understanding.”

Sometimes our greatest struggle isn't trusting that God exists.

It's trusting God when His plan doesn't make sense to us.

💜 “BUT I FEEL LIKE GOD HAS LEFT ME”

Feelings can be convincing.

But compare the feeling with Scripture.

❌ FEELING:

“God has left me.”

đź“– TRUTH:

“…I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”— Hebrews 13:5 (KJV)

The feeling is real.

But the conclusion isn't true.

🌻 “I FEEL LIKE I'LL NEVER GET THROUGH THIS”

❌ FEELING:

“I can't keep going.”

đź“– TRUTH:

“My grace is sufficient for thee: for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”— 2 Corinthians 12:9 (KJV)

You may not have strength for the next year today.

God hasn't asked you to.

Ask Him for strength for:

TODAY.

Then trust Him again tomorrow.

🛡️ “I FEEL LIKE MY PAST STILL DEFINES ME”

❌ FEELING:

“After what I've done, God could never really forgive me.”

đź“– TRUTH:

“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins...”— 1 John 1:9 (KJV)

If God has forgiven what you've confessed and repented of, don't keep trying to serve a sentence Jesus already paid for.

RECEIVE HIS GRACE.

🌿 “I DON'T FEEL LIKE GOD IS WORKING”

This one can be especially difficult.

We want evidence.

We want progress.

We want the answer.

But sometimes roots are growing underground before anything appears above the soil.

You may not see what God is doing.

That doesn't mean God is doing nothing.

Romans 8:28 reminds us:

“And we know that all things work together for good to them that love God...”

It doesn't say everything that happens is good.

It says GOD can work through all things.

There's a difference.

🧠 BE CAREFUL WHEN YOU'RE TIRED

Have you noticed how much worse everything can look when you're exhausted?

A small problem becomes enormous.

A comment feels more personal.

An unanswered message feels like rejection.

Tomorrow feels hopeless.

Sometimes the most spiritual thing you can do is:

Pray.

Drink some water.

Eat something nourishing.

Turn off the phone.

Get some rest.

And look at the situation again tomorrow.

Elijah experienced something similar in 1 Kings 19.

He was exhausted and discouraged.

And before God gave him further direction, Elijah was allowed to rest and eat.

DON'T MAKE EVERY EMOTION A THEOLOGICAL CONCLUSION.

Sometimes you're simply tired.

đź’ś DON'T SHAME YOURSELF FOR FEELING

Maybe you've been telling yourself:

“A good Christian shouldn't feel this way.”

Stop hiding your emotions from God.

He already knows.

Bring them to Him.

The Psalms are filled with people telling God exactly what they felt:

Fear.

Anger.

Confusion.

Grief.

Loneliness.

Joy.

Hope.

God can handle your honesty.

Prayer can sound like:

“Lord, this is what I feel—but help me see what is true.”

That's not weak faith.

That's bringing your heart under God's care.

⚔️ DON'T LET FEELINGS MAKE PERMANENT DECISIONS

Feelings change.

That's why we need to be cautious about making major decisions in moments of:

Anger.

Fear.

Exhaustion.

Deep disappointment.

Jealousy.

Offense.

Panic.

Before reacting:

PRAY.

WAIT.

CHECK SCRIPTURE.

SEEK WISE COUNSEL WHEN NEEDED.

Then respond from truth rather than simply reacting from emotion.

🛡️ THE BELT OF TRUTH KEEPS US GROUNDED

This week we're learning why truth comes first in the Armor of God.

Truth tells us:

WHO GOD IS.

Truth tells us:

WHO WE ARE IN CHRIST.

Truth exposes:

WHAT IS FALSE.

Truth guides:

HOW WE SHOULD LIVE.

Truth gives us something firm to hold onto when emotions feel unstable.

Your feelings may change ten times today.

GOD'S WORD WILL NOT.

đź’ś TODAY'S REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  1. What emotion has been strongest in me lately?

  2. What is that emotion telling me?

  3. Is the conclusion I'm drawing actually supported by Scripture?

  4. Am I denying my feelings instead of bringing them honestly to God?

  5. Have I made assumptions because of fear, hurt, or insecurity?

  6. Am I making an important decision while emotionally exhausted?

  7. What truth from Scripture answers what I'm feeling?

  8. What would trusting God look like today—even if my feelings don't immediately change?

🙏 TODAY'S PRAYER

Heavenly Father,

Thank You that I can bring my whole heart to You.

You already know what I feel.

You know my fears.

My disappointments.

My questions.

My hurts.

My hopes.

And the things I struggle to put into words.

Help me never confuse honesty with unbelief.

Teach me to bring my emotions to You instead of allowing them to control me.

When fear speaks, remind me of Your faithfulness.

When shame speaks, remind me of Your grace.

When loneliness speaks, remind me of Your presence.

When discouragement speaks, remind me of Your promises.

When I don't understand what You're doing, help me trust Your heart.

Today I choose not to lean entirely upon my own understanding.

I TRUST YOU.

Fasten Your truth securely around my life.

Guide my thoughts.

Guard my heart.

Direct my path.

In Jesus' precious name,

Amen.

🌼 TODAY'S ARMOR CHALLENGE

FEEL IT — CHECK IT — REPLACE IT

Take a page in your journal and write three headings:

đź’ś WHAT I FEEL:

Write it honestly.

“I feel afraid.”

“I feel forgotten.”

“I feel discouraged.”

“I feel angry.”

Don't pretend.

Then write:

🛡️ WHAT IS TRUE?

Ask:

What does Scripture actually say?

Find a verse that speaks to your situation.

Then write:

đź“– WHAT I CHOOSE:

For example:

I feel afraid.

God says He is with me.

Therefore, I choose to trust Him even while I work through this fear.

Notice we're not saying:

“My feelings don't matter.”

We're saying:

“MY FEELINGS MATTER—BUT GOD'S TRUTH LEADS ME.”

đź“– THIS WEEK'S MEMORY VERSE

“Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy word is truth.”— John 17:17 (KJV)

And today's Scripture:

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”— Proverbs 3:5 (KJV)

🛡️ BELT OF TRUTH CHECK

Ask yourself:

đź’ś Am I being honest about what I feel?

đź“– Am I comparing my conclusions with Scripture?

🧠 Am I allowing emotions to control my thoughts?

🙏 Have I prayed before reacting?

🛡️ Am I standing on truth even when I don't feel it yet?

✝️ Am I trusting Jesus with what I don't understand?

🌟 TODAY'S ENCOURAGEMENT

Friend, you don't have to wake up every morning feeling fearless to have faith.

Sometimes faith looks like:

“LORD, I'M SCARED—BUT I'M STILL FOLLOWING YOU.”

Sometimes faith looks like:

“LORD, I'M HURTING—BUT I STILL BELIEVE YOU'RE GOOD.”

Sometimes faith looks like:

“LORD, I DON'T UNDERSTAND—BUT I TRUST YOU.”

And sometimes faith is simply:

“LORD, HELP MINE UNBELIEF.”

God isn't frightened by your emotions.

Bring them to Him.

Then allow His truth to steady your heart.

🌻 CLOSING THOUGHT

Your feelings are part of your story.

BUT THEY ARE NOT THE AUTHOR.

God is.

So when feelings say:

“You're alone...”

Truth says:

“I WILL NEVER LEAVE THEE.”

When feelings say:

“You can't...”

Truth says:

“MY GRACE IS SUFFICIENT.”

When feelings say:

“There's no hope...”

Truth says:

“HOPE THOU IN GOD.”

When feelings say:

“I don't understand...”

Truth says:

“TRUST IN THE LORD WITH ALL THINE HEART.”

Feel what you feel.

Bring it honestly to Jesus.

Open His Word.

And then declare:

🛡️ “MY FEELINGS MAY CHANGE, BUT GOD'S TRUTH DOES NOT.”

đź“– I WILL WALK BY FAITH, NOT BY SIGHT.

💜🛡️⚔️✝️

📖 TOMORROW — SEPTEMBER 10

Tomorrow we continue with the Belt of Truth:

🧠 RENEW YOUR MIND WITH TRUTH

Changing the Way We Think

“…be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind...”— Romans 12:2 (KJV)

We'll learn that God doesn't merely want us to recognize wrong thoughts.

HE WANTS TO CHANGE THE WAY WE THINK.

Until tomorrow:

Feel it honestly.

Take it to Jesus.

Check it against Scripture.

Choose God's truth.

And keep the Belt of Truth securely fastened.

Have a beautifully blessed Wednesday! 💜🛡️📖
