WHAT IS RIGHTEOUSNESS?
Not My Goodness—His Grace
📖 Theme Verse
“Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth, and having on the breastplate of righteousness.”— Ephesians 6:14 (KJV)
🌅 GOOD MORNING & HAPPY MONDAY!
We are beginning a brand-new week in our study of the Whole Armor of God.
Last week we spent time learning about the Belt of Truth.
But remember—we don't remove one piece of armor when we begin studying another.
So keep that Belt of Truth fastened!
Today we're adding:
🛡️ THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.
A soldier's breastplate protected the chest and vital organs.
Spiritually, Paul tells us to put on righteousness.
But that brings us to an important question:
WHAT IS RIGHTEOUSNESS?
Is it being a good person?
Going to church?
Reading our Bible every day?
Giving money?
Helping people?
Never making mistakes?
No.
Those things may be good, but they cannot make us righteous before God.
The beautiful truth of the Gospel is:
WE DON'T HAVE TO MAKE OURSELVES RIGHTEOUS.
JESUS HAS MADE A WAY FOR US.
📖 TODAY'S SCRIPTURE READING

❤️ FIRST, WE HAVE TO RECOGNIZE THE PROBLEM
Romans 3:23 says:
“For all have sinned, and come short of the glory of God.”
There's a little word in that verse that puts every one of us on equal ground:
ALL.
Not some.
Not just the people whose sins look worse than ours.
ALL.
Every one of us needs a Savior.
That's important because sometimes we compare ourselves with other people and think:
“Well, at least I don't do what they do.”
But someone else's life isn't the standard.
GOD'S HOLINESS IS.
And compared with His holiness, every one of us falls short.
That's why we need Jesus.
✝️ JESUS DID WHAT WE COULD NOT DO
2 Corinthians 5:21 gives us an incredible truth:
“For He hath made Him to be sin for us, who knew no sin; that we might be made the righteousness of God in Him.”
Jesus knew no sin.
Yet He willingly went to the cross for sinners.
For me.
For you.
He took what we deserved so that through Him we could receive what we could never earn.
RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Notice the final words:
“IN HIM.”
Our righteousness is not found in:
Our accomplishments.
Our reputation.
Our religious activity.
Our education.
Our ministry.
Our good deeds.
Or how well we compare with someone else.
OUR RIGHTEOUSNESS IS FOUND IN CHRIST.
💜 GRACE CANNOT BE EARNED
Some of us struggle with this.
We understand grace in our heads, but somewhere inside we still feel as though we need to prove ourselves to God.
So we think:
“If I pray more, maybe God will love me more.”
“If I serve more, maybe God will accept me.”
“If I stop making mistakes, maybe I'll finally be worthy.”
But Ephesians 2:8–9 says:
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast.”
You don't earn a gift.
YOU RECEIVE IT.
We pray because we love God.
We read Scripture because we want to know Him.
We serve because He has changed us.
We obey because we belong to Him.
But none of those things purchase salvation.
JESUS ALREADY PAID THE PRICE.
🛡️ WHY DOES PAUL CALL IT A BREASTPLATE?
Think about where a breastplate sits.
OVER THE HEART.
Proverbs 4:23 says:
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”
Our hearts need protection.
Because one of the enemy's favorite places to attack is our sense of who we are before God.
He may whisper:
“You're not good enough.”
And the truth is—
on our own, we're not.
But that's not where the Gospel ends.
The answer is:
“MY HOPE IS NOT IN MY GOODNESS. MY HOPE IS IN JESUS.”
Then another day pride may whisper:
“Look how much better you are than them.”
The Breastplate of Righteousness answers that lie too:
“EVERY GOOD THING IN ME IS BECAUSE OF GOD'S GRACE.”
Righteousness protects us from both:
CONDEMNATION
and
SELF-RIGHTEOUSNESS.
⚔️ CONVICTION IS NOT CONDEMNATION
We need to understand the difference.
When the Holy Spirit convicts us of sin, He points us toward:
Repentance.
Forgiveness.
Restoration.
Change.
Conviction says:
“THIS IS WRONG—COME BACK TO GOD.”
Condemnation says:
“YOU ARE WORTHLESS—RUN AWAY FROM GOD.”
Romans 8:1 says:
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus...”
If God shows you something that needs changing—
CHANGE IT.
If you've sinned—
CONFESS IT.
But don't allow shame to convince you that Jesus no longer wants you.
🙏 WHEN YOU FALL—RUN TOWARD GOD
Have you ever messed up and immediately felt like hiding from God?
Adam and Eve did.
After they sinned, they hid.
Shame often tells us:
“DON'T PRAY.”
“DON'T OPEN YOUR BIBLE.”
“DON'T GO TO CHURCH.”
“GOD IS DISAPPOINTED IN YOU.”
But that's exactly when we need to run toward Him.
1 John 1:9 says:
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Don't excuse sin.
Don't rename it.
Don't blame someone else.
CONFESS IT.
Receive forgiveness.
Learn.
Get back up.
And keep walking.
A FALL DOESN'T HAVE TO BECOME WHERE YOU LIVE.
🌿 RIGHTEOUSNESS SHOULD CHANGE HOW WE LIVE
Now let's be careful.
Being saved by grace doesn't mean:
“I CAN LIVE HOWEVER I WANT.”
Ephesians 2:10 comes immediately after the verses about salvation by grace:
“For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus unto good works...”
Our works don't produce salvation.
SALVATION PRODUCES GOOD WORKS.
There's a difference.
When Jesus changes our hearts, it should eventually show up in our lives.
In how we:
Speak.
Treat people.
Handle conflict.
Use money.
Respond to temptation.
Forgive.
Love.
Serve.
Live when nobody is watching.
Grace doesn't give us permission to stay exactly as we were.
GRACE TRANSFORMS US.
💜 STOP TRYING TO LOOK RIGHTEOUS
There is a difference between:
BEING CHANGED
and
LOOKING CHANGED.
Jesus frequently confronted religious people who looked wonderful outwardly but had serious heart problems.
God isn't impressed by an image.
We don't need to pretend.
If you're struggling—
tell God.
If you're angry—
tell God.
If you're tempted—
tell God.
If you're confused—
tell God.
If you've sinned—
confess it.
GOD ALREADY KNOWS.
Righteousness isn't pretending you're perfect.
It's living honestly before the One who is.
🌻 RIGHTEOUSNESS SHOULD MAKE US HUMBLE
If righteousness comes from Jesus, we have no reason to look down on anyone else.
The ground at the foot of the cross is level.
We've all needed grace.
We've all needed mercy.
We've all needed forgiveness.
So when we see somebody struggling, we can stand firmly upon truth without becoming self-righteous.
We can say:
“THAT IS WRONG.”
while also remembering:
“I NEEDED A SAVIOR TOO.”
Truth and humility can live together.
🛡️ WHAT DOES PUTTING ON THE BREASTPLATE LOOK LIKE TODAY?
Before you leave home, remind yourself:
✝️ I BELONG TO JESUS.
❤️ MY RIGHTEOUSNESS IS FOUND IN HIM.
🙏 WHEN I SIN, I WILL CONFESS IT.
🛡️ I WILL NOT LIVE UNDER CONDEMNATION.
🌿 I WILL CHOOSE WHAT IS RIGHT.
📖 GOD'S WORD DEFINES RIGHTEOUSNESS.
💜 I WILL WALK HUMBLY.
⚔️ I WILL GUARD MY HEART.
That is something we can carry into Monday morning.
💜 TODAY'S REFLECTION QUESTIONS
What does righteousness mean to me?
Have I been trying to earn God's approval?
Is my confidence in Jesus—or in how good I think I am?
Is there shame from my past that I am still carrying?
Do I recognize the difference between conviction and condemnation?
Is there something I need to confess to God today?
Have I compared my life with someone else's to make myself feel more righteous?
Is God's grace producing visible change in my life?
What area of my heart needs the protection of righteousness today?
🙏 TODAY'S PRAYER
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for another Monday and another opportunity to walk with You.
Thank You for Jesus.
Thank You that I do not have to earn salvation.
Thank You for grace.
Thank You for mercy.
Thank You for forgiveness.
Thank You that my righteousness is found in Christ.
Lord, forgive me for the times I've trusted in my own goodness.
Forgive me when I've compared myself with others.
Forgive me when I've allowed pride into my heart.
And forgive me when I've allowed shame to keep me from running back to You.
Search my heart today.
If there is sin, convict me.
Give me humility to confess it.
Help me receive Your forgiveness and continue forward.
Protect my heart from condemnation.
Protect me from self-righteousness.
Help me put on the Breastplate of Righteousness and live like someone who belongs to Jesus.
May my choices today honor You.
In Jesus' precious name,
Amen.
🌼 TODAY'S ARMOR CHALLENGE
🛡️❤️ NOT MY GOODNESS—HIS GRACE
Take a page and divide it into two sections.
❌ WHAT I SOMETIMES TRUST IN
Write anything you sometimes use to measure your worth before God.
Maybe:
My accomplishments.
Church attendance.
Serving others.
Being a good person.
Other people's opinions.
Comparing myself with someone else.
Then write:
✝️ WHAT JESUS HAS DONE
He loved me.
He went to the cross.
He paid for sin.
He offers forgiveness.
He gives grace.
He makes me new.
Then write this declaration:
I WILL NOT TRUST IN MY OWN GOODNESS.
MY CONFIDENCE IS IN JESUS CHRIST.
📖 SCRIPTURE TO REMEMBER

🛡️ MONDAY ARMOR CHECK
Before beginning your day:
🛡️ BELT OF TRUTH
Am I standing upon God's Word rather than feelings and opinions?
❤️ BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS
Is my confidence in Christ rather than myself?
🙏 HEART CHECK
Is there anything I need to confess?
💜 GRACE CHECK
Am I giving others some of the grace God has given me?
✝️ JESUS CHECK
Am I trying to impress people—or honor Christ?
🌟 TODAY'S ENCOURAGEMENT
Friend, maybe you've been trying very hard to prove yourself.
To God.
To people.
Maybe even to yourself.
You don't have to spend today trying to convince God that you're worthy of grace.
GRACE WAS NEVER ABOUT YOUR WORTHINESS.
It was about His goodness.
You couldn't purchase it.
You couldn't earn it.
And you can't brag about receiving it.
You can simply say:
“THANK YOU, JESUS.”
Then get up.
Put on your armor.
And live today in a way that reflects the grace you've received.
🌻 CLOSING THOUGHT
When the enemy points toward your past and says:
“LOOK WHAT YOU DID.”
Look toward the cross and remember:
“LOOK WHAT JESUS DID.”
When pride says:
“LOOK HOW GOOD YOU ARE.”
Remember:
“EVERY GOOD THING I HAVE COMES FROM GOD.”
When shame says:
“HIDE.”
Grace says:
“COME.”
When condemnation says:
“YOU'RE FINISHED.”
Jesus says:
“FOLLOW ME.”
Friend, don't wear your accomplishments as your breastplate.
Don't wear your reputation.
Don't wear your good deeds.
Don't wear your church attendance.
Wear what God provided:
🛡️❤️ THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.
Fasten the Belt of Truth.
Put on the Breastplate of Righteousness.
And walk into this Monday knowing:
✝️ MY HOPE IS NOT IN HOW GOOD I AM.
💜 MY HOPE IS IN JESUS.
📖 TOMORROW — TUESDAY, SEPTEMBER 15
We continue with:
❤️🛡️ GUARD YOUR HEART
Not Everything Deserves Access
“Keep thy heart with all diligence; for out of it are the issues of life.”— Proverbs 4:23 (KJV)
Tomorrow we'll talk about guarding our hearts without becoming hard-hearted—protecting what influences us while still loving people the way Jesus calls us to love.
Until tomorrow:
Fasten the Belt of Truth.
Put on the Breastplate of Righteousness.
Rest in God's grace.
Walk humbly.
Choose what is right.
And keep your eyes on Jesus.
