Recognize the Lie — Stand on the Truth

“Ye are of your father the devil, and the lusts of your father ye will do... When he speaketh a lie, he speaketh of his own: for he is a liar, and the father of it.”— John 8:44 (KJV)
🌅 GOOD MORNING & HAPPY SATURDAY!
So far this week we have learned:
🛡️ September 1 — Put On the Whole Armor of God
⚔️ September 2 — Know Who the Real Enemy Is
💪 September 3 — Be Strong in the Lord
🛡️ September 4 — Having Done All, Stand
And today we ask:
HOW DOES THE ENEMY TRY TO GET US TO FALL?
The Bible doesn't teach us about spiritual warfare so that we will become frightened.
It teaches us so that we will become prepared.
One of the enemy's greatest strategies isn't always something dramatic.
Sometimes it begins with something very small:
A LIE.
A thought.
A question.
A little doubt.
A twisted truth.
And we see this strategy all the way back in the Garden of Eden.
📖 TODAY’S SCRIPTURE READING
Genesis 3:1–13John 8:42–44Ephesians 6:10–182 Corinthians 10:3–52 Corinthians 11:3James 1:12–16James 4:7–81 Peter 5:8–9
🍎 THE FIRST STRATEGY: “HATH GOD SAID?”
Genesis 3:1 records the serpent asking Eve:
“…Yea, hath God said...?”
Notice where the attack began.
With God's Word.
The enemy wanted Eve to question what God had actually said.
That same strategy still works today.
Thoughts may come:
“Did God really mean that?”
“Does the Bible really say that?”
“Maybe God's Word doesn't apply anymore.”
“Surely this little compromise doesn't matter.”
Whenever God's truth becomes negotiable, deception has room to grow.
That's why knowing Scripture matters.
You cannot recognize a counterfeit if you don't know the truth.
🛡️ STRATEGY #2 — MIXING TRUTH WITH ERROR
Deception isn't always an obvious lie.
Sometimes it contains enough truth to sound believable.
Genesis 3 shows the serpent twisting God's words.
This is why we cannot judge something simply because it:
Sounds spiritual.
Feels right.
Is popular.
Is accepted by culture.
Comes from someone we admire.
Everything must be measured against God's Word.
“Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy word is truth.”— John 17:17 (KJV)
Our standard isn't:
“What does everybody else think?”
Our standard is:
“What does God say?”
🧠STRATEGY #3 — THE BATTLE FOR YOUR THOUGHTS
Not every thought that enters your mind deserves a place in your heart.
2 Corinthians 10:5 tells us to be:
“…bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”
Thoughts can come like:
“You're worthless.”
“Nothing will ever change.”
“God has forgotten you.”
“Nobody cares.”
“You might as well give up.”
“You'll never be forgiven.”
“Everyone is against you.”
Don't automatically accept every thought as truth.
Stop.
Examine it.
Ask:
IS THIS TRUE?
DOES THIS AGREE WITH SCRIPTURE?
DOES THIS DRAW ME TOWARD CHRIST OR AWAY FROM HIM?
Then replace the lie with God's truth.
💜 STRATEGY #4 — ISOLATION
Discouragement often whispers:
“Nobody understands.”
And sometimes we begin pulling away.
From church.
From Christian fellowship.
From people who pray for us.
From Bible study.
Even from God.
Isolation can make lies sound louder because there are fewer voices reminding us of truth.
We all need time alone with God, but there is a difference between solitude with God and isolating ourselves in discouragement.
Don't suffer silently when God has placed trustworthy believers around you.
Ask for prayer.
Talk to someone mature in the faith.
Stay connected.
⚔️ STRATEGY #5 — DISTRACTION
The enemy doesn't always have to convince someone to stop believing in God.
Sometimes distraction is enough.
Keep them:
Busy.
Preoccupied.
Offended.
Scrolling.
Comparing.
Arguing.
Worrying.
Chasing things that don't matter.
Until prayer becomes an afterthought.
Bible reading becomes occasional.
Worship becomes rushed.
And Jesus slowly moves from the center.
Ask yourself today:
“WHAT HAS BEEN GETTING MOST OF MY ATTENTION?”
Because whatever constantly holds our attention can eventually influence our hearts.
🌿 STRATEGY #6 — OFFENSE AND DIVISION
We studied this earlier this week:
PEOPLE ARE NOT THE ENEMY.
Yet one of the easiest ways to distract Christians is to get us fighting one another.
Someone says something.
Feelings get hurt.
Assumptions begin.
Gossip spreads.
Sides form.
And suddenly believers spend more energy fighting each other than praying together.
That doesn't mean we ignore wrongdoing.
There are times for:
Healthy boundaries.
Truthful conversations.
Accountability.
Correction.
But we must guard against allowing legitimate hurt to become bitterness.
You can address wrong without allowing hatred into your heart.
🔥 STRATEGY #7 — TEMPTATION
James 1:14 reminds us:
“But every man is tempted, when he is drawn away of his own lust, and enticed.”
This is important.
We should not blame the devil for every bad decision we make.
Scripture teaches personal responsibility.
The enemy may tempt.
Culture may influence.
People may pressure.
But we still make choices.
That's why spiritual maturity includes learning to recognize our own weak areas.
Ask yourself:
“WHERE AM I MOST VULNERABLE?”
Knowing your weakness isn't admitting defeat.
It's knowing where you need to stay especially close to God.
⚠️ STRATEGY #8 — CONDEMNATION AFTER FAILURE
Temptation says:
“Go ahead.”
Then after we fall, condemnation says:
“Look what you've done. God could never use you now.”
What a terrible cycle.
But Scripture gives us truth:
“There is therefore now no condemnation to them which are in Christ Jesus...”— Romans 8:1 (KJV)
When we sin, Scripture doesn't tell us to hide from God.
It tells us:
“If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins...”— 1 John 1:9 (KJV)
Conviction draws us toward repentance.
Condemnation tells us to run away in shame.
Know the difference.
✝️ LOOK AT HOW JESUS RESPONDED
When Jesus was tempted in Matthew 4, His repeated response was:
“IT IS WRITTEN.”
He answered temptation with Scripture.
This gives us a beautiful pattern.
When fear speaks:
“IT IS WRITTEN.”
When temptation comes:
“IT IS WRITTEN.”
When discouragement whispers:
“IT IS WRITTEN.”
When culture contradicts God's truth:
“IT IS WRITTEN.”
This is why the Sword of the Spirit—the Word of God—is part of our armor.
🛡️ BE ALERT WITHOUT BECOMING AFRAID
1 Peter 5:8 says:
“Be sober, be vigilant...”
Being vigilant means being watchful.
But watchfulness is not fear.
We don't need to spend our lives looking for the devil behind every inconvenience.
We don't need to blame spiritual warfare for every mistake, disagreement, flat tire, difficult day, or consequence of our own choices.
Our focus should never become:
“What is the enemy doing?”
more than:
“WHAT IS GOD DOING?”
Jesus is greater.
God is sovereign.
The Holy Spirit is with us.
The Word is true.
We fight from a place of confidence in Christ—not terror of the enemy.
💜 TODAY’S REFLECTION QUESTIONS
Is there a lie I've been believing about myself, another person, or God?
Have I allowed feelings to become more authoritative than Scripture?
What has been distracting me from time with God?
Am I carrying an offense that is becoming bitterness?
Have I isolated myself when I really need prayer and Christian fellowship?
Where am I most vulnerable to temptation?
Do I know enough Scripture to recognize when truth is being twisted?
Am I spending more time thinking about the enemy than focusing on Jesus?
🙏 TODAY’S PRAYER
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for giving me Your Word so that I do not have to live confused or afraid.
Help me recognize deception.
When lies come, remind me of Your truth.
Guard my mind from thoughts that do not agree with Your Word.
Guard my heart from bitterness.
Guard my relationships from unnecessary division.
Guard my time from distractions that pull me away from You.
Show me areas where I am vulnerable to temptation, and give me wisdom to flee what needs to be avoided.
When I fail, help me run toward You in repentance instead of away from You in shame.
Teach me to recognize the enemy's strategies without becoming consumed with the enemy.
Keep my eyes upon JESUS.
You are greater.
Your Word is true.
Your grace is sufficient.
And my confidence is in You.
In Jesus' precious name,
Amen.
🌼 TODAY’S ARMOR CHALLENGE
IDENTIFY THE LIE—REPLACE IT WITH TRUTH
Take your journal and make two columns.
❌ THE LIE
Write one thought you've struggled with lately.
Maybe:
“I'm alone.”
“God doesn't hear me.”
“I'll never change.”
“My past defines me.”
“I can't make it through this.”
Then beside it write:
đź“– THE TRUTH
Find a Scripture that directly answers the lie.
For example:
LIE: “God has abandoned me.”
TRUTH:
“…I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”— Hebrews 13:5 (KJV)
Now speak the truth aloud.
DON'T JUST REJECT THE LIE—REPLACE IT WITH GOD'S WORD.
📖 TODAY’S SCRIPTURE TO REMEMBER
“…for he is a liar, and the father of it.”— John 8:44 (KJV)
And remember:
“…Thy word is truth.”— John 17:17 (KJV)
WHEN THE LIE COMES—GO BACK TO THE TRUTH.
🛡️ ARMOR CHECK — DAY FIVE
Before ending today's study, ask:
Am I guarding my thoughts?
Am I staying rooted in Scripture?
Have distractions weakened my prayer life?
Am I allowing offense to become bitterness?
Am I staying connected to healthy Christian fellowship?
Do I recognize my vulnerable areas?
Are my eyes fixed upon Jesus?
🌟 TODAY’S ENCOURAGEMENT
Friend, you do not have to live afraid of spiritual warfare.
Jesus has not left His children defenseless.
God gave us His Word.
God gave us prayer.
God gave us faith.
God gave us truth.
God gave us salvation through Jesus Christ.
God gave us the Holy Spirit.
And God gave us the Whole Armor of God.
THE GOAL ISN'T TO BECOME AN EXPERT ON DARKNESS.
THE GOAL IS TO KNOW THE LIGHT SO WELL THAT YOU RECOGNIZE WHAT DOESN'T BELONG.
Stay close to Jesus.
Know His Word.
Pray.
Be watchful.
And stand.
🌻 CLOSING THOUGHT
The enemy's first recorded question to humanity was:
“HATH GOD SAID...?”
And thousands of years later, the answer remains:
YES—GOD HAS SAID.
And His Word still stands.
When the world changes—
God's Word stands.
When feelings change—
God's Word stands.
When circumstances change—
God's Word stands.
When lies come—
God's Word stands.
So put on the armor.
Open your Bible.
Fill your mind with truth.
Keep your heart close to Jesus.
And when deception whispers:
“Hath God said?”
Lift the Sword of the Spirit and answer:
⚔️ “IT IS WRITTEN.”

📖 TOMORROW — SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 6
JESUS HAS ALREADY OVERCOME
Our Confidence Is in Christ
“…In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”— John 16:33 (KJV)
Tomorrow we'll close our first week of September by remembering something essential:
We are not fighting for victory as though we don't know how the story ends.
JESUS CHRIST HAS ALREADY OVERCOME.
Until tomorrow:
Recognize the lie.
Return to the Word.
Keep your eyes on Jesus.
And stand in the truth.
