JESUS HAS ALREADY OVERCOME

Our Confidence Is in Christ

📖 Theme Verse

“These things I have spoken unto you, that in Me ye might have peace. In the world ye shall have tribulation: but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”— John 16:33 (KJV)

🌅 GOOD MORNING & BLESSED SUNDAY!

We've spent this first week of September talking about spiritual battles.

We've learned to:

🛡️ Put on the Whole Armor of God.

⚔️ Recognize who the real enemy is.

💪 Be strong in the Lord.

🛡️ Stand when we've done everything we know to do.

📖 Recognize lies and return to God's truth.

But before we move deeper into the individual pieces of God's armor, there is something we absolutely must understand:

JESUS HAS ALREADY OVERCOME.

We aren't studying spiritual warfare so that we become frightened.

We aren't putting on God's armor because we're unsure whether Jesus is powerful enough.

And we certainly aren't spending September glorifying the enemy.

Our focus is JESUS.

The enemy may fight.

Trouble may come.

Temptation may appear.

Trials may shake us.

But Jesus said:

“I HAVE OVERCOME THE WORLD.”

That is where our confidence begins.

📖 TODAY'S SCRIPTURE READING

John 16:25–33Romans 8:31–391 John 4:1–41 John 5:4–5Colossians 2:13–15Revelation 12:10–11Psalm 27:1–5Ephesians 6:10–18

✝️ JESUS DIDN'T PROMISE A TROUBLE-FREE LIFE

Notice exactly what Jesus said:

“In the world ye shall have tribulation...”

Jesus never promised that following Him would mean:

No hardship.

No disappointment.

No grief.

No temptation.

No difficult people.

No unanswered questions.

No waiting seasons.

No spiritual battles.

But He didn't stop with tribulation.

He continued:

“…but be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”

Jesus acknowledges the reality of trouble while giving us a greater reality:

THE TROUBLE IS REAL—BUT SO IS THE VICTORY OF CHRIST.

🛡️ YOUR PEACE IS FOUND “IN ME”

Look again at the beginning of John 16:33:

“…that in Me ye might have peace.”

Jesus didn't say peace would be found in perfect circumstances.

He said:

“IN ME.”

We often think:

“I'll have peace when this problem is solved.”

“I'll have peace when that person changes.”

“I'll have peace when I know what's going to happen.”

“I'll have peace when everything settles down.”

But Jesus offers peace before everything changes.

Peace in the waiting.

Peace in uncertainty.

Peace during the storm.

Peace while the battle is still happening.

Christian peace isn't the absence of trouble.

It is the presence of Christ in the middle of it.

⚔️ DON'T GIVE THE ENEMY MORE CREDIT THAN HE DESERVES

When studying spiritual warfare, we must be careful not to become so focused on Satan that we stop focusing on Jesus.

The enemy is not equal to God.

There is not an evenly matched battle between two equal powers.

God is GOD.

He is Creator.

He is sovereign.

He is eternal.

He is Almighty.

The enemy is created and limited.

1 John 4:4 reminds us:

“Ye are of God, little children, and have overcome them: because greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.”

Read that again:

GREATER IS HE.

Not slightly greater.

Not sometimes greater.

GREATER.

Our confidence is not in our ability to defeat darkness.

Our confidence is in the One who already has.

✝️ THE CROSS LOOKED LIKE DEFEAT—BUT IT WAS VICTORY

Imagine standing near Calvary.

Jesus is crucified.

His followers are scattered.

Hope appears gone.

The stone is rolled across the tomb.

If you stopped the story there, everything would look defeated.

But God wasn't finished.

Sunday came.

The stone was rolled away.

The tomb was empty.

Jesus Christ arose!

What looked like the darkest moment became the place where God's victory was revealed.

Maybe somebody needs that reminder today:

DON'T JUDGE THE END OF YOUR STORY BY THE DARKEST CHAPTER.

God may still be working where you cannot see.

🌿 YOU CAN BE TROUBLED WITHOUT BEING DEFEATED

Paul wrote:

“We are troubled on every side, yet not distressed; we are perplexed, but not in despair;Persecuted, but not forsaken; cast down, but not destroyed.”— 2 Corinthians 4:8–9 (KJV)

Look at those words:

Troubled—but not destroyed.

Perplexed—but not hopeless.

Persecuted—but not abandoned.

Knocked down—but not finished.

Following Jesus doesn't mean nothing ever knocks us down.

It means:

WHAT KNOCKS US DOWN DOESN'T GET THE FINAL WORD.

Jesus does.

💜 NOTHING CAN SEPARATE YOU FROM HIS LOVE

Romans 8 asks:

“If God be for us, who can be against us?”— Romans 8:31 (KJV)

Then Paul lists tribulation, distress, persecution, famine, nakedness, peril, and sword.

And after all of it he declares:

“Nay, in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him that loved us.”— Romans 8:37 (KJV)

Notice:

It doesn't say we are more than conquerors because we're talented.

Or fearless.

Or perfect.

Or strong enough.

“THROUGH HIM THAT LOVED US.”

Our victory is connected to Jesus.

🛡️ YOU DON'T HAVE TO LIVE AFRAID

Fear can make the battle look bigger than God.

But faith reminds us who God is.

Psalm 27:1 says:

“The LORD is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear? the LORD is the strength of my life; of whom shall I be afraid?”

When fear comes, don't spend all your time studying what you're afraid of.

Study the character of God.

Remember His faithfulness.

Remember answered prayers.

Remember what Scripture says.

Remember the Cross.

Remember the empty tomb.

Remember that Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever.

🌻 VICTORY DOESN'T ALWAYS MEAN THE BATTLE ENDS TODAY

This is important.

Sometimes we hear the word victory and assume it means every difficult circumstance will immediately disappear.

But biblical victory can also look like:

Having peace while waiting.

Choosing forgiveness when you've been hurt.

Refusing temptation.

Worshiping while grieving.

Trusting God when you don't understand.

Remaining faithful when the answer hasn't come.

Getting back up after falling.

Continuing to love.

Continuing to pray.

Continuing to believe.

Sometimes victory is simply refusing to let the battle separate you from Jesus.

✝️ OUR GREATEST VICTORY IS SALVATION

The greatest battle isn't about getting everything we want in this life.

Jesus came to save sinners.

He died for our sins.

He rose again.

And salvation is found in Him.

1 Corinthians 15:57 declares:

“But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.”

That is why our hope extends beyond whatever happens today.

Our confidence is not merely:

“God will fix every circumstance exactly how I want.”

Our confidence is:

“JESUS CHRIST IS LORD, AND I BELONG TO HIM.”

💜 TODAY'S REFLECTION QUESTIONS

1. Have I been focusing more on the battle than on Jesus?

2. Is there a situation that has made me feel defeated?

3. Am I waiting for circumstances to become perfect before allowing myself to experience God's peace?

4. What does Jesus' statement “I have overcome the world” mean for my current situation?

5. Where has fear become louder than faith?

6. Can I identify a time when God carried me through something I once thought I couldn't survive?

7. What would living from confidence in Christ look like today?

🙏 TODAY'S PRAYER

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for sending Jesus.

Thank You for the Cross.

Thank You for the empty tomb.

Thank You that my hope is not based upon my circumstances.

Today I confess that sometimes I allow the battle to become bigger in my mind than the One who has already overcome.

Forgive me.

Turn my eyes back toward Jesus.

When trouble comes, give me peace.

When fear whispers, remind me that You are greater.

When I am weary, strengthen me.

When I fall, help me rise again.

When I cannot see what You are doing, help me trust Your heart.

Guard me from becoming obsessed with darkness when You have called me to walk in the Light.

I put my confidence in Jesus Christ.

You have overcome.

You are with me.

And I belong to You.

In Jesus' precious name,

Amen.

🌼 TODAY'S CHALLENGE

REMEMBER YOUR VICTORIES

Take your journal and write:

GOD HAS BEEN FAITHFUL TO ME.

Now write down three times God has carried you through something difficult.

Maybe it was:

A season of grief.

A financial struggle.

A family crisis.

A frightening diagnosis or health concern.

A broken relationship.

A job situation.

A time of uncertainty.

A prayer God answered differently than expected.

Or simply a season you didn't think you'd survive.

Beside each one write:

“BUT GOD BROUGHT ME THROUGH.”

Then write today's declaration:

THE GOD WHO WAS FAITHFUL THEN IS STILL FAITHFUL NOW.

📖 TODAY'S SCRIPTURE TO REMEMBER

“…be of good cheer; I have overcome the world.”— John 16:33 (KJV)

And:

“…greater is He that is in you, than he that is in the world.”— 1 John 4:4 (KJV)

🛡️ WEEK ONE ARMOR CHECK

We've completed our first week!

Before moving forward, ask yourself:

🛡️ Do I understand that spiritual battles are real without living afraid?

⚔️ Do I remember that people are not my enemy?

💪 Am I depending upon God's strength instead of my own?

🛡️ Am I willing to stand when I've done all I know to do?

📖 Am I learning to recognize lies and replace them with God's truth?

✝️ Is my attention ultimately fixed upon JESUS?

If you don't remember everything we've studied this week, remember this:

MY CONFIDENCE IS IN JESUS.

🌟 SUNDAY ENCOURAGEMENT

Friend, maybe you've walked into church carrying something nobody else knows about.

Maybe you're smiling while your heart is tired.

Maybe you're waiting on an answer.

Maybe you're fighting fear.

Maybe this week has been difficult.

Go worship anyway.

Go praise Him anyway.

Go thank Him anyway.

Not because everything is perfect.

But because JESUS IS STILL WORTHY.

Praise isn't pretending the battle doesn't exist.

Praise is declaring:

“MY BATTLE IS NOT BIGGER THAN MY GOD.”

🌻 CLOSING THOUGHT

This week we've talked a lot about standing.

But remember why we can stand.

Not because we're powerful.

Not because we never struggle.

Not because we never become afraid.

Not because we know every answer.

WE STAND BECAUSE JESUS CHRIST HAS ALREADY OVERCOME.

The Cross wasn't the end.

The grave wasn't the end.

And your difficult season isn't the end either.

Keep your eyes on Jesus.

Put on the Whole Armor of God.

Walk in truth.

Pray.

Trust.

Stand.

And when the battle gets loud, remind your heart:

✝️ JESUS HAS ALREADY OVERCOME.

🛡️ GREATER IS HE THAT IS IN ME.

💜 MY CONFIDENCE IS IN JESUS.

📖 TOMORROW — MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 7

Tomorrow we begin Week Two of our September study and start looking closely at the first piece of armor:

🛡️ THE BELT OF TRUTH

WHAT IS TRUTH?

“Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy word is truth.”— John 17:17 (KJV)

We're going to discover why truth comes first in the Armor of God and why everything else must be anchored to it.

Until tomorrow:

Keep your eyes on Jesus.

Walk in His peace.

Put on the armor.

And remember—HE HAS OVERCOME.
