RECOGNIZING LIES

The Truth Will Make You Free

📖 Theme Verse

“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”— John 8:32 (KJV)

🌅 GOOD MORNING, DEAR FRIENDS!

Have you ever believed something for so long that you stopped questioning whether it was actually true?

Maybe someone said something hurtful years ago.

Maybe you failed at something and decided:

“I'm just not good enough.”

Maybe you've been disappointed so many times that you've begun believing:

“Nothing good ever happens for me.”

Maybe you've prayed and waited, and somewhere along the way the thought crept in:

“God must have forgotten me.”

Sometimes the most dangerous lies aren't the ones that sound ridiculous.

They're the ones we've repeated so many times that they begin sounding like truth.

Yesterday we learned that the first piece of God's armor is the Belt of Truth.

Today we're learning why we desperately need it.

Because you cannot effectively stand against a lie while agreeing with it.

📖 TODAY'S SCRIPTURE READING

John 8:31–44Genesis 3:1–62 Corinthians 10:3–5Philippians 4:6–9Psalm 139:13–18Romans 8:31–39Ephesians 6:10–18John 17:17

⚔️ THE ENEMY HAS BEEN LYING FROM THE BEGINNING

Jesus said of the devil:

“…there is no truth in him... for he is a liar, and the father of it.”— John 8:44 (KJV)

Go all the way back to Genesis.

The serpent approached Eve with:

“…Yea, hath God said...?”— Genesis 3:1

His strategy began by causing her to question God's Word.

Then came contradiction.

Then deception.

Then disobedience.

The strategy hasn't changed much.

QUESTION THE TRUTH.

DISTORT THE TRUTH.

REPLACE THE TRUTH.

And eventually:

LIVE ACCORDING TO THE LIE.

That is why knowing God's Word matters.

🛡️ LIES OFTEN BEGIN WITH A THOUGHT

A thought enters your mind:

“Nobody cares about me.”

Then another:

“I'm completely alone.”

Then:

“Even God isn't listening.”

Before long, one thought has become an entire story.

But Scripture tells us:

“…bringing into captivity every thought to the obedience of Christ.”— 2 Corinthians 10:5 (KJV)

Notice that Scripture doesn't tell us to believe every thought.

It tells us to examine our thoughts.

Ask:

Is this actually true?

What evidence do I have?

Am I assuming something?

Does this thought agree with Scripture?

Is this thought leading me toward Christ or away from Him?

🧠 NOT EVERY NEGATIVE THOUGHT IS A SPIRITUAL ATTACK

This is important as we study spiritual warfare.

Sometimes a negative thought comes because:

We're tired.

We're stressed.

We're hurt.

We're afraid.

We've misunderstood someone.

We're remembering something painful.

Or we're dealing with consequences from our own decisions.

We don't need to blame the devil for every unpleasant thought.

But regardless of where a thought originated:

GOD'S TRUTH SHOULD STILL BE OUR STANDARD.

Instead of obsessing over:

“Where did this thought come from?”

Sometimes the better question is:

“IS IT TRUE?”

Then take it to Scripture.

💜 LIE #1 — “I AM WORTHLESS.”

Maybe someone spoke words over you years ago.

Maybe you were bullied.

Rejected.

Abandoned.

Overlooked.

Maybe you made mistakes you're ashamed of.

But your worth is not determined by somebody else's opinion.

Psalm 139:14 says:

“I will praise Thee; for I am fearfully and wonderfully made...”

And Romans 5:8 reminds us:

“But God commendeth His love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

❌ THE LIE:

“I have no value.”

📖 THE TRUTH:

God created me, knows me, loves me, and Christ died for me.

🌿 LIE #2 — “MY PAST DEFINES ME.”

Maybe you look back and see mistakes.

Wrong choices.

Failure.

Sin.

Regret.

But if you have come to Christ, your past does not have the authority to name your future.

“Therefore if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature: old things are passed away...”— 2 Corinthians 5:17 (KJV)

Repentance doesn't mean pretending the past didn't happen.

Sometimes consequences remain.

Sometimes apologies need to be made.

Sometimes restoration takes time.

But grace means:

YOUR FAILURE DOESN'T HAVE TO BECOME YOUR IDENTITY.

🌻 LIE #3 — “GOD HAS FORGOTTEN ME.”

Waiting can make this lie especially convincing.

You prayed.

Nothing changed.

You prayed again.

Still nothing.

And eventually you wonder:

“Lord, do You even see me?”

Isaiah 49:15–16 says:

“…yet will I not forget thee.Behold, I have graven thee upon the palms of My hands...”

Silence does not mean abandonment.

Waiting does not mean God has forgotten.

GOD CAN BE WORKING EVEN WHEN YOU CANNOT SEE WHAT HE IS DOING.

✝️ LIE #4 — “GOD COULD NEVER USE SOMEONE LIKE ME.”

Tell that to Moses.

Tell that to Rahab.

Tell that to David.

Tell that to Peter.

Tell that to Paul.

Scripture is filled with imperfect people used by a perfect God.

God isn't looking for a flawless past.

He is looking for surrendered hearts.

If God has forgiven you, don't spend your life trying to disqualify someone He has redeemed.

🛡️ LIE #5 — “I HAVE TO HANDLE EVERYTHING MYSELF.”

We studied this last week.

Ephesians 6:10 doesn't say:

“Be strong enough.”

It says:

“Be strong in the Lord, and in the power of His might.”

You were never designed to carry everything alone.

Ask for help.

Ask for prayer.

Rest when needed.

Seek wise counsel.

And most importantly:

DEPEND UPON GOD.

💜 LIE #6 — “IF I FEEL IT, IT MUST BE TRUE.”

Feelings are powerful.

But feelings change.

You can wake up feeling hopeful and go to bed discouraged.

Circumstances can change emotions within minutes.

That's why our foundation cannot be:

“HOW DO I FEEL?”

Our foundation must be:

“WHAT HAS GOD SAID?”

Feelings should be acknowledged.

But they should not become the final authority over truth.

⚔️ REPLACE—DON'T JUST REMOVE

Imagine pulling weeds from a garden and leaving the ground empty.

Eventually something else grows there.

Our minds can work similarly.

It isn't enough to say:

“I'm not going to think negatively anymore.”

Replace the lie.

❌ “I AM ALONE.”

Replace it with:

“…I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”— Hebrews 13:5

❌ “I CAN'T HANDLE TODAY.”

Replace it with:

“I can do all things through Christ which strengtheneth me.”— Philippians 4:13

❌ “THERE'S NO HOPE.”

Replace it with:

“Now the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing...”— Romans 15:13

❌ “I WILL ALWAYS BE MY PAST.”

Replace it with:

“…if any man be in Christ, he is a new creature...”— 2 Corinthians 5:17

DON'T JUST STOP BELIEVING THE LIE.

START REHEARSING THE TRUTH.

📖 FREEDOM COMES FROM CONTINUING IN THE WORD

We love quoting John 8:32:

“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”

But look at what Jesus says immediately before it:

“If ye continue in My word, then are ye My disciples indeed; And ye shall know the truth...”— John 8:31–32 (KJV)

There's something important here.

Jesus connects knowing truth with continuing in His Word.

Not reading Scripture once.

Not opening the Bible only during emergencies.

CONTINUE.

Stay in the Word.

Study it.

Meditate upon it.

Live it.

The more familiar you become with God's truth, the easier it becomes to recognize what doesn't belong.

🌼 WHAT ARE YOU SAYING TO YOURSELF?

Listen to your own words today.

Do you frequently say:

“I can't.”

“Nobody cares.”

“Nothing ever works out.”

“I'm stupid.”

“I'm a failure.”

“I'll never change.”

Words repeated long enough can reinforce beliefs.

I'm not suggesting that we pretend difficulties don't exist or that positive words magically change circumstances.

Biblical faith isn't pretending.

It is choosing to interpret our lives through God's truth rather than through hopelessness.

💜 TODAY'S REFLECTION QUESTIONS

  1. What negative statement do I repeat about myself most often?

  2. Is it actually true?

  3. Can I find Scripture that addresses it?

  4. Have someone else's words become part of my identity?

  5. Have past failures convinced me that God cannot use me?

  6. Have I mistaken God's waiting season for abandonment?

  7. Am I allowing feelings to determine what I believe?

  8. What truth does God want me to begin rehearsing instead?

🙏 TODAY'S PRAYER

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for Your truth.

Lord, reveal any lies that I have accepted as truth.

Show me where fear, hurt, disappointment, past experiences, or the words of others have shaped what I believe about myself, about others, or about You.

Bring my thoughts into obedience to Christ.

When I feel worthless, remind me that You created me.

When my past accuses me, remind me of Your grace.

When I feel forgotten, remind me that You see me.

When I feel alone, remind me that You are with me.

When I feel weak, remind me that my strength comes from You.

Help me stop rehearsing lies and begin rehearsing Your Word.

Give me discernment.

Renew my mind.

Guard my heart.

And teach me to walk in the freedom that comes from knowing Your truth.

In Jesus' precious name,

Amen.

🌼 TODAY'S CHALLENGE

🛡️ THE LIE & TRUTH LIST

Take a sheet of paper and draw a line down the middle.

On the left write:

THE LIES I'VE BEEN BELIEVING

On the right write:

📖 WHAT GOD SAYS

Write at least three lies you've struggled with.

Then find a KJV Scripture that answers each one.

For example:

❌ LIE:

“I'm alone.”

📖 TRUTH:

“…I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.”Hebrews 13:5

Then underneath your page write:

I WILL NOT BUILD MY LIFE ON A LIE.

I CHOOSE GOD'S TRUTH.

Keep this page.

Return to it whenever those old thoughts try to come back.

📖 THIS WEEK'S MEMORY VERSE

“Sanctify them through Thy truth: Thy word is truth.”— John 17:17 (KJV)

And today's verse:

“And ye shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free.”— John 8:32 (KJV)

🛡️ BELT OF TRUTH CHECK

Before ending today's study, ask:

🛡️ What am I believing?

📖 Does it agree with God's Word?

🧠 Am I taking my thoughts captive?

💜 Have someone's words become louder than God's Word?

✝️ Am I allowing my past to define me instead of Christ?

📖 Am I continuing in Scripture?

⚔️ When a lie comes, do I know enough truth to answer it?

🌟 TODAY'S ENCOURAGEMENT

Friend, maybe someone spoke something over you years ago that you're still carrying today.

Maybe they said:

“You'll never amount to anything.”

“You're not smart enough.”

“Nobody will ever love you.”

“You'll never change.”

And somewhere along the way, their voice became your voice.

Today I want you to take those words to Jesus.

Someone else's opinion does not outrank God's Word.

WHAT THEY SAID IS NOT YOUR IDENTITY.

If you belong to Christ, your identity is found in Him.

Stop allowing yesterday's voice to determine tomorrow's direction.

LET GOD HAVE THE FINAL WORD.

🌻 CLOSING THOUGHT

The enemy asked Eve:

“HATH GOD SAID?”

And today the answer is still:

YES. GOD HAS SAID.

When the lie says:

“You're alone.”

Ask:

WHAT HAS GOD SAID?

When fear says:

“You won't make it.”

Ask:

WHAT HAS GOD SAID?

When your past says:

“You'll never change.”

Ask:

WHAT HAS GOD SAID?

When discouragement says:

“Give up.”

Ask:

WHAT HAS GOD SAID?

Open your Bible.

Find the truth.

Write it down.

Speak it.

Believe it.

Walk in it.

🛡️ FASTEN THE BELT OF TRUTH.

Because Jesus promised:

“YE SHALL KNOW THE TRUTH, AND THE TRUTH SHALL MAKE YOU FREE.”

🛡️📖⚔️✝️💜

📖 TOMORROW — WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 9

We continue with the Belt of Truth:

🛡️ TRUTH VERSUS FEELINGS

When What You Feel Doesn't Match What God Says

“Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding.”— Proverbs 3:5 (KJV)

Tomorrow we'll talk about something every one of us experiences:

What do I do when my feelings are screaming one thing—but God's Word says something different?

Until tomorrow:

Recognize the lie.

Open the Word.

Replace the lie with truth.

And walk in the freedom Jesus gives.

Have a beautifully blessed Tuesday! 💜🛡️📖
