“When Grief Sneaks Up on You”
📖 Today’s Scripture — KJV
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart; and saveth such as be of a contrite spirit.”
— Psalm 34:18
🌿 Good Morning, Sweet Friends
Have you ever been having a perfectly ordinary day when grief suddenly showed up?
You weren't expecting it.
You weren't looking through old photographs.
It wasn't an anniversary.
It wasn't their birthday.
Nothing particularly sad had happened.
Maybe you were walking through the grocery store when you saw their favorite food.
Maybe someone walked past wearing a familiar perfume.
Maybe a song started playing.
Maybe you heard someone laugh in a way that sounded just like them.
Maybe you reached for your phone because, for one brief second, you forgot you couldn't call them.
And suddenly—
there it was.
That ache.
That lump in your throat.
Those tears filling your eyes.
And perhaps you thought:
“Where did that come from? I thought I was doing better.”
Friend, you probably are doing better.
But doing better doesn't mean you stop loving.
And when you've loved someone deeply, memories can find you in the most unexpected places.
đź’ś A Hard Moment Doesn't Erase Your Healing
I want someone to hear this today:
One difficult moment does not mean you're back at the beginning.
One afternoon of tears doesn't erase months of healing.
Missing someone terribly today doesn't mean you've stopped moving forward.
Crying over an old photograph doesn't mean you're stuck in the past.
Grief isn't a staircase where we climb one step at a time and never step backward.
Some days are easier.
Some are harder.
Some days you may laugh until your stomach hurts.
And another day, one little memory may bring tears.
Both can be part of healing.
Give yourself grace for both.
🌷 Sometimes the Smallest Things Carry the Biggest Memories
Isn't it amazing what our hearts remember?
A smell.
A song.
A recipe.
A television show.
A particular restaurant.
A phrase someone used to say.
A favorite chair.
A coffee cup.
A handwriting sample.
Something that might mean absolutely nothing to anyone else can mean everything to you.
Why?
Because attached to that little thing is a person you loved.
Maybe other people don't understand why you're keeping that old birthday card.
Or that shirt.
Or that handwritten recipe.
But you know.
It isn't really about the object. It's about the memory attached to it.
And sometimes those little reminders bring the person we miss very close to our hearts again.
🕊️ When the Tears Come, Let Them Come
We spend a lot of energy trying not to cry.
Especially in public.
We blink quickly.
Look away.
Change the subject.
Take a deep breath.
And sometimes that's necessary.
But when you're somewhere safe, don't be afraid of your tears.
Psalm 56:8 says:
“Put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?”
What a beautiful reminder that our tears matter to God.
You don't have to apologize to Him for crying.
You don't have to say:
“Lord, I'm sorry. I should be stronger by now.”
Instead, you can simply say:
“Lord, I really miss them today.”
God understands.
He already knows.
And He will sit with you in that moment.
đź’ś Don't Be Afraid When Memories Find You
Sometimes after a painful grief trigger, we begin avoiding anything that might remind us of our loved one.
But eventually, some of those same memories may become treasures.
The song that once made you cry may someday make you smile.
The photograph you couldn't look at may someday become your favorite.
The recipe that felt impossible to make may someday become something you teach your grandchildren.
The story you couldn't tell without crying may someday have the whole family laughing.
Give it time.
You don't have to force yourself.
Healing doesn't mean forgetting.
Sometimes healing means the memory still comes—but eventually, alongside the tears, gratitude begins to appear.
And you find yourself saying:
“Lord, I miss them so much. But thank You for letting me love them.”
🌸 God Is Close in the Unexpected Moments
Today's Scripture doesn't say God is merely aware of the brokenhearted.
It says:
“The LORD is nigh…”
He is near.
When you're standing in the grocery aisle fighting tears—
He is near.
When you're sitting in your car after hearing that song—
He is near.
When you're holding an old photograph—
He is near.
When you're lying awake at night remembering—
He is near.
When nobody else realizes you're struggling—
He is near.
You may feel alone in that moment.
But you aren't.
🌿 Turn the Trigger Into a Thank You
Here is something we can begin practicing.
When an unexpected memory appears, instead of immediately fighting it, pause.
If you see their favorite candy, think:
“Thank You, Lord, for remembering how much they loved that.”
If their favorite song comes on:
“Thank You, Lord, for this memory.”
If you smell their perfume:
“Thank You for all those hugs.”
If you find their handwriting:
“Thank You that I still have this little piece of them.”
That doesn't mean you won't cry.
You might cry while saying thank You.
And that's okay.
Grief and gratitude can share the same tears.
đź’ś Your Loved One Is More Than the Pain of Losing Them
Please don't let grief reduce someone's entire beautiful life to the day they died.
Remember how they lived.
Remember what made them laugh.
Remember what made them mad.
Remember the silly things they did.
Remember their favorite meal.
Remember the way they said your name.
Remember what they taught you.
Remember their faith.
Remember their quirks.
Remember the ordinary things.
Keep telling their story.
The goal isn't to erase their memory so it stops hurting.
It's learning to carry their memory in a way that reminds us how blessed we were to have loved them.
🙏 Tuesday Morning Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Today I pray for every person who has been caught off guard by grief.
Lord, You know those unexpected moments.
The song.
The photograph.
The smell.
The empty chair.
The favorite food.
The familiar place.
The moment when a memory suddenly brings tears.
Help us understand that these moments do not mean we are failing.
Remind us that one difficult day does not erase how far You have carried us.
When tears come, help us give ourselves grace.
When memories hurt, comfort us.
And when those memories begin bringing smiles again, help us receive them with gratitude.
Thank You for the people we were blessed to love.
Thank You for every ordinary day that became a precious memory.
Thank You that when grief catches us by surprise, it never catches You by surprise.
You are already there.
You are near to the brokenhearted.
Help us feel Your presence today.
Thank You for Jesus and the hope we have through Him.
In Jesus' precious Name,
Amen.
🌻 Today's Grief Support Challenge
Turn a Memory Into Gratitude
If something reminds you of your loved one today, don't immediately push the memory away.
Pause.
Take a breath.
Then say:
“Lord, thank You for this memory.”
Afterward, write down:
đź’ś What reminded me of them?
🌷 What memory came to mind?
🕊️ What am I thankful for about that memory?
You may cry while doing this.
That's okay.
Tears and gratitude can live together.
đź’ś Let's Remember Them Together
I'd love for today's comments to become a place of remembrance.
Finish this sentence:
“Something unexpected that always reminds me of my loved one is…”
Maybe it's a song.
A smell.
A restaurant.
A television show.
A certain food.
A saying.
A place.
Tell us their name and share the memory if you're comfortable.
Let's keep their stories alive.
