💜 It Doesn't Have to Be Perfect — It Just Has to Begin

📖 Today's Scripture — KJV

"For a just man falleth seven times, and riseth up again..."— Proverbs 24:16

Good Friday morning, authors, writers, and future authors! ☕🍂📖

Have you ever spent twenty minutes writing a paragraph...

Then another thirty minutes changing it...

Then deleted the whole thing...

Then rewrote it...

Then decided the first version was better? 😂

Welcome to writing!

Today I want to talk about something that stops many wonderful stories before they ever have the opportunity to become books:

PERFECTION.

We tell ourselves:

"I'll share it when it's perfect."

"I'll publish when I'm completely confident."

"I'll start writing when I know exactly what I'm doing."

But here's the problem:

If you're waiting for perfect, you may be waiting forever.

Your first draft doesn't need to be perfect.

It needs to exist.

🌿 God Never Asked You to Know Everything Before You Begin

Yesterday we talked about beginning a new month and taking that first step.

But sometimes we take the first step...

And immediately start questioning it.

“Is this good enough?”

“Does this sound professional?”

“What if someone doesn't like it?”

“What if I make a mistake?”

Friend, you're going to make mistakes.

Every writer does.

You'll find misspelled words.

You'll write sentences that make absolutely no sense when you read them the next morning. 😊

You'll probably create a chapter you later decide doesn't belong in the book.

That's part of writing.

Writing is not simply creating. Writing is creating, learning, editing, and growing.

Don't expect the first version of something to look like the finished version.

💜 Give Yourself Permission to Write a Messy First Draft

Somebody needs to hear this today:

Your first draft is allowed to be messy!

The first draft isn't where everything has to be perfect.

It's where you get the story out of your head and onto the page.

There will be time to edit.

There will be time to rearrange.

There will be time to improve your grammar.

There will be time to strengthen characters.

There will be time to check facts.

There will be time to ask someone else to read it.

But you can't edit a blank page.

First, write the story.

Then make it better.

Sometimes we try to write and edit at the exact same time, and our inner critic becomes louder than our creativity.

Today, tell that critic:

“You can come back later. Right now, I'm writing.” 😊

📖 Even Published Books Went Through a Process

When you pick up a beautifully published book, you're looking at the finished product.

You didn't see:

The deleted paragraphs.

The rewritten chapters.

The spelling mistakes.

The editor's notes.

The changes to the title.

The cover designs that weren't chosen.

The moments when the author wondered whether the book would ever be finished.

We compare our unfinished manuscript to someone else's finished book.

That's not a fair comparison.

You're looking at your construction site and comparing it to someone else's finished house.

Keep building.

🌸 Don't Let Fear Disguise Itself as Perfectionism

Sometimes when we say:

“It's just not ready yet,”

what we really mean is:

“I'm scared.”

Scared someone won't like it.

Scared we'll receive criticism.

Scared it won't sell.

Scared someone will notice our mistakes.

Scared we aren't really good enough to call ourselves an author.

So we keep changing things.

And changing things.

And changing things.

Eventually, we have to ask ourselves:

Am I improving the book—or am I hiding behind perfection because I'm afraid to finish it?

That's a hard question.

But it's an important one.

Pray about it.

Ask trusted people for honest feedback.

Make the necessary improvements.

Then have enough courage to move forward.

💜 Excellence and Perfection Are Not the Same Thing

Now, I don't want anyone thinking I'm saying:

“Just throw anything together and publish it!” 😂

Absolutely not!

We should care about the quality of our work.

Proofread.

Edit.

Research.

Check Scripture references.

Verify facts.

Ask for feedback.

Do the best work you're capable of doing.

Excellence says, “I will give this my best.”

Perfectionism says, “If I cannot guarantee nobody will find a flaw, I cannot release it.”

There is a difference.

Give God your best.

Then recognize that you're still human.

And humans are always learning.

🌿 Your Mistakes Can Become Your Teachers

Think about something you know how to do well today.

Were you wonderful at it the first time?

Probably not.

We learn by doing.

We learn by trying.

We learn by making mistakes.

We learn by asking questions.

We learn by receiving correction.

And sometimes we learn by saying:

“Well... I definitely won't do THAT again!” 😂

That's growth.

Don't be ashamed of learning.

The author you are today doesn't have to be the author you are five years from now.

Keep growing.

🙏 Friday Author Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for another beautiful day and another opportunity to use the gifts You have given us.

Today I pray for every writer who feels paralyzed by perfection.

For the person who keeps rewriting because they're afraid their work isn't good enough.

For the future author who hasn't begun because they don't know everything yet.

For the published author who is afraid to try something new because they might fail.

Lord, remind us that growth requires us to begin.

Give us wisdom to recognize the difference between pursuing excellence and chasing impossible perfection.

Help us welcome helpful correction.

Give us patience with ourselves while we learn.

Show us where our writing genuinely needs improvement, and give us courage to make those changes.

But when fear tries to keep us endlessly stuck, help us recognize it.

Give us the courage to finish.

The humility to edit.

The wisdom to learn.

And the faith to release what we've faithfully prepared when the time is right.

May our words encourage others and bring glory to You.

In Jesus' precious name,

Amen.

✍️ TODAY'S AUTHOR CHALLENGE

DON'T EDIT—JUST WRITE!

Today's challenge is simple.

Set a timer for 20 minutes.

Open your manuscript.

And WRITE.

For those twenty minutes:

❌ Don't fix every spelling mistake.

❌ Don't rewrite the first sentence fifteen times.

❌ Don't research book covers.

❌ Don't check social media.

❌ Don't worry about publishing.

Just write.

When the timer ends, save your work.

Editing can come later.

Today we're teaching ourselves that progress doesn't have to be perfect.

💜 FRIDAY AUTHORS HUB — SHOW US THE REAL WRITING JOURNEY!

Let's have a little fun today!

📚 PUBLISHED AUTHORS

Share your book links and answer:

How many times did you rewrite something in your book before finally saying, “Okay, it's finished”? 😂

And tell our future authors something you learned from publishing your first book.

✍️ CURRENT WRITERS

What are you working on?

And be honest:

Are you writing—or are you endlessly editing the same three pages? 😊

Tell us your goal for this weekend.

💡 FUTURE AUTHORS

What's stopping you from beginning?

Are you afraid you don't know enough?

Are you worried your writing won't be good enough?

Ask your questions.

That's why we're here.

❤️ EVERYONE

Find one writer in the comments and tell them:

KEEP WRITING!

Visit someone's book link.

Ask about their story.

Answer a publishing question if you can.

Encourage someone who's struggling.

Let's remind each other that none of us started out knowing everything.

🌷 TODAY'S ENCOURAGEMENT

“Your first draft doesn't need to impress anyone. It simply needs to give your story somewhere to begin.”

Author, stop expecting Chapter One to look like the finished book.

Write it.

Then improve it.

Learn.

Edit.

Rewrite.

Ask for help.

Grow.

And eventually...

LET IT GO.

Don't allow the fear of making a mistake to keep a God-given dream trapped inside your heart.

Maybe the sentence isn't perfect.

Write the next one.

Maybe the chapter needs work.

Keep going.

Maybe you're still learning.

Good! That means you're growing.

Today, give yourself permission to be a writer who is still learning.

Because every finished book began somewhere.

Not with perfection.

Not with all the answers.

But with someone who finally decided:

“I'M GOING TO WRITE IT ANYWAY.” 💜📖✍️

Happy Friday, Authors!

PRAY • WRITE • LEARN • EDIT • GROW • KEEP GOING
