âď¸ THE MASTERâS PRUNING
When God Removes What Hinders Growth
October Theme: The Fruit of the SpiritGrowing in Grace ⢠Rooted in Christ ⢠Bearing Fruit for His Glory
đ TODAYâS THEME SCRIPTURE
ââŚevery branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.âJohn 15:2 (KJV)
â GOOD MORNING & HAPPY SUNDAY, BIBLE STUDY FAMILY!
What a beautiful first few days weâve had in our October study!
đ October 1 â What Is Growing in Your Life?đż October 2 â Abide in the Vineđł October 3 â Rooted and Grounded
And today we come to something that isnât always comfortable:
âď¸ PRUNING.
I was thinking about what happens when someone prunes a fruit tree.
To someone who doesnât understand the process, it can almost look like theyâre hurting the tree.
Branches are cut.
Things are removed.
The tree may look bare for a while.
But an experienced gardener understands something we may not immediately see:
Some things must be removed so healthier growth can take place.
And friend, sometimes our spiritual lives are like that too.
There may be attitudes, habits, distractions, relationships, priorities, or patterns that are keeping us from growing the way God desires.
Sometimes we pray:
âLord, help me grow.â
And God begins showing us what needs to change.
That part isnât always comfortable.
But we need to remember:
GOD ISNâT INTERESTED ONLY IN MAKING US COMFORTABLE.
HE IS INTERESTED IN HELPING US GROW.
đż PRUNING ISNâT THE SAME AS PUNISHMENT
This is important.
We should be careful about looking at every difficult event in our lives and declaring:
âGod took this away because He is pruning me.â
We donât always know why something happened.
Not every loss is divine pruning.
Not every painful circumstance means God deliberately caused it.
We live in a world where grief, disappointment, sickness, broken relationships, consequences, and unexpected circumstances are real.
But whatever season we are walking through, we can ask:
âLORD, WHAT CAN YOU TEACH ME HERE?â
God can work in us even through circumstances we never would have chosen.
Romans 8:28 reminds us:
âAnd we know that all things work together for good to them that love GodâŚâ
It doesnât say everything that happens is good.
It tells us God can work through all things.
There is a difference.
âď¸ SOMETIMES GOD PRUNES OUR ATTITUDES
Sometimes what needs pruning isnât something around us.
Itâs something inside us.
Pride.
Bitterness.
Jealousy.
Unforgiveness.
A critical spirit.
Constant complaining.
The need to always be right.
Comparison.
Selfishness.
Maybe nobody else can see it.
But God can.
And as we spend time in His Word, the Holy Spirit may begin putting His finger on something and saying:
âThis needs to change.â
Friend, when conviction comes, donât run from God.
Run toward Him.
Pray:
âLord, show me what needs to go.â
đą SOMETIMES WHAT NEEDS PRUNING IS A DISTRACTION
Not everything that distracts us is sinful.
Sometimes it is simply taking too much of our attention.
Our phones.
Social media.
Television.
Busyness.
Hobbies.
Work.
Even good activities can become unhealthy when they crowd out what matters most.
Maybe we say:
âI donât have time to read my Bible.â
But somehow we found an hour to scroll.
âI donât have time to pray.â
But we watched three episodes of something.
Ouch! đŹ
Sometimes Bible study steps on my toes too!
The question isnât whether phones, television, hobbies, or entertainment are automatically wrong.
The question is:
âWHAT HAS MY ATTENTION?â
And:
âIS ANYTHING CROWDING JESUS OUT?â
đą PRUNING REQUIRES SURRENDER
This may be the hardest part.
Itâs one thing to recognize something needs to change.
Itâs another thing to release it.
Sometimes we want God to grow new fruit while we hold tightly to old habits.
We pray for peace while feeding worry.
We pray for joy while constantly comparing ourselves with others.
We pray for gentleness while refusing to control our words.
We pray for self-control while continually placing ourselves in situations that feed temptation.
Friend, there comes a point when prayer must be accompanied by obedience.
James 1:22 says:
âBut be ye doers of the word, and not hearers onlyâŚâ
If God shows us something that needs changing, our response should be:
âYES, LORD.â
Even when itâs difficult.
đ THE GOAL IS MORE FRUIT
Donât miss the beautiful ending of John 15:2:
ââŚthat it may bring forth more fruit.â
The goal of pruning is growth.
God wants our lives to increasingly reflect Christ.
More love.
More joy.
More peace.
More longsuffering.
More gentleness.
More goodness.
More faith.
More meekness.
More temperance.
Sometimes we focus so much on what we are surrendering that we forget what God may be growing.
DONâT ONLY LOOK AT WHAT IS BEING CUT AWAY.
LOOK AT WHAT GOD WANTS TO GROW IN ITS PLACE.
Bitterness outâ
â¤ď¸ Love grows.
Constant worry surrenderedâ
đď¸ Peace has room to grow.
Harshness surrenderedâ
𤲠Gentleness grows.
Impulsive reactions surrenderedâ
đ§ Self-control grows.
Pride surrenderedâ
đż Meekness grows.
That is the beautiful work of spiritual growth.
đ PRUNING DOESNâT MEAN YOU ARENâT GROWING
Notice something else in John 15:2.
Jesus speaks of a branch that already bears fruit being pruned so that it can bear more fruit.
Friend, sometimes God shows us something that needs changing precisely because we are growing.
Donât become discouraged every time God convicts you.
Conviction can become an invitation to deeper growth.
You may think:
âLord, I thought I was doing better!â
And perhaps you are.
But God may be showing you the next area.
Spiritual maturity isnât reaching a point where God never has anything else to teach us.
Itâs developing a heart willing to keep saying:
âLORD, IâM STILL TEACHABLE.â
đ TODAYâS PRAYER
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for this beautiful Sunday.
Thank You for loving me enough to continue working in my life.
Lord, search my heart.
Show me anything that is hindering my spiritual growth.
If there is bitterness, help me release it.
If there is pride, humble me.
If there is unforgiveness, help me begin walking toward forgiveness.
If there are distractions taking too much of my attention, give me wisdom to create healthier boundaries.
If there are habits that need changing, give me strength to change them.
Father, when life is difficult and I donât understand why, help me not assume I know every reason behind what is happening.
Instead, help me ask:
âLord, how can I grow through this?â
Keep me connected to Jesus.
Deepen my roots.
Prune what hinders me.
And let my life bear more fruit for Your glory.
In Jesusâ precious name,
Amen. đ
âď¸ TODAYâS PRUNING CHALLENGE
Take a quiet moment today and ask God:
âLORD, IS THERE SOMETHING IN MY LIFE THAT NEEDS PRUNING?â
Then write down these three questions:
âď¸ WHAT NEEDS TO GO?Is there an attitude, habit, distraction, or pattern God has been showing me?
đą WHAT NEEDS TO GROW?Which Fruit of the Spirit would become stronger if I surrendered this?
đŁ WHAT STEP CAN I TAKE TODAY?What practical act of obedience can I make?
Then pray:
âLORD, I SURRENDER WHAT HINDERS MY GROWTH.â
đ SCRIPTURE TO REMEMBER
âEvery branch in me that beareth not fruit he taketh away: and every branch that beareth fruit, he purgeth it, that it may bring forth more fruit.âJohn 15:2 (KJV)
đť SUNDAY CLOSING THOUGHT
Friend, maybe God has been putting His finger on something in your life.
Donât ignore it.
Donât make excuses for it.
But donât respond with hopelessness either.
Bring it to Jesus.
We are all still growing.
We all have areas that need work.
And Godâs grace meets us in the growing process.
Remember where we have been this week:
đ Examine the fruit.
đż Abide in the Vine.
đł Deepen the roots.
âď¸ Allow the pruning.
And thenâ
đ WATCH GOD GROW THE FRUIT.
Stay close to Jesus today.
Worship Him.
Open His Word.
Listen when He speaks to your heart.
And remain willing to say:
âLORD, WHATEVER IS KEEPING ME FROM GROWING CLOSER TO YOU, HELP ME SURRENDER IT.â
Have a beautifully blessed Sunday, Bible Study Family! đđđżâď¸
đ TOMORROW â OCTOBER 5
Tomorrow we begin studying the individual Fruit of the Spirit!
And we start with the one that stands first:
â¤ď¸ LOVE â MORE THAN A FEELING
What does biblical love really look like?
How did Jesus love?
How do we love when it isnât easy?
And what is the difference between saying âI love youâ and actually living a life of love?
Tomorrow we begin with LOVE. â¤ď¸
