❤️ LOVING THE DIFFICULT ONES

Loving Like Jesus When It Isn’t Easy

October Theme: The Fruit of the SpiritGrowing in Grace • Rooted in Christ • Bearing Fruit for His Glory

📖 TODAY’S SCRIPTURE

“But I say unto you, Love your enemies, bless them that curse you, do good to them that hate you, and pray for them which despitefully use you, and persecute you;”Matthew 5:44 (KJV)

☕ GOOD MORNING, BIBLE STUDY FAMILY!

Yesterday we began studying the first Fruit of the Spirit:

❤️ LOVE.

We learned that biblical love is more than a feeling.

Today we’re going a little deeper.

Because it’s easy to talk about love when we’re talking about people who love us back.

It’s easy to love the person who encourages us.

The person who supports us.

The person who treats us kindly.

But what about the person who hurt us?

What about the person who disappointed us?

The person who lied about us?

The person who betrayed our trust?

The person who seems determined to push every button we have? 😬

Jesus gives us one of His most challenging commands:

“LOVE YOUR ENEMIES.”

Friend, Jesus never said this would be easy.

But He showed us that through Him, there is another way to respond.

❤️ LOVE DOESN’T MEAN WHAT HAPPENED WAS OKAY

This is very important.

Forgiving someone does not mean saying:

“What you did didn’t matter.”

Loving someone does not mean pretending they never hurt you.

And biblical love does not require you to remain in an abusive, dangerous, manipulative, or continually destructive situation.

You can love someone and have boundaries.

You can forgive someone and still recognize that trust must be rebuilt.

You can pray for someone without giving them unlimited access to your life.

You can release bitterness without returning to an unhealthy relationship.

LOVE DOES NOT REQUIRE THE ABSENCE OF WISDOM.

Sometimes the most loving and wise thing you can say is:

“I forgive you, but things cannot continue the way they have been.”

🙏 JESUS SAID TO PRAY FOR THEM

Now here comes the part that may step on our toes.

Jesus didn't only say:

“Don't hate your enemies.”

He said:

“…pray for them which despitefully use you…”

Have you ever tried praying sincerely for somebody who hurt you?

It can be difficult.

You may begin with:

“Lord… You know who I'm talking about.” 😬

And maybe that's all you can manage at first.

But keep praying.

You don't have to pray that God gives them everything they want.

Pray:

“Lord, draw them closer to You.”

“Lord, work in their heart.”

“Lord, give them wisdom.”

“Lord, help them know Your truth.”

“Lord, help me release my bitterness.”

Sometimes prayer changes the situation.

Sometimes prayer changes the other person.

And sometimes—

PRAYER CHANGES US.

💔 FORGIVENESS CAN BE A PROCESS

Sometimes Christians speak about forgiveness as though we simply flip a switch.

For some hurts, forgiveness may come quickly.

For deeper wounds, it may involve repeatedly surrendering the hurt to God.

You may forgive today and wake up tomorrow remembering what happened.

That doesn't necessarily mean you failed.

It may mean you need to bring the pain back to God again.

Forgiveness is not pretending you don't remember.

It is choosing not to build your life around revenge.

Romans 12:19 says:

“Dearly beloved, avenge not yourselves…”

We release vengeance to God.

And sometimes our prayer becomes:

“LORD, I DON’T WANT THIS PAIN TO TURN ME INTO SOMEONE I DON’T WANT TO BECOME.”

🌿 DON’T LET THEIR BEHAVIOR CONTROL YOUR CHARACTER

This is something I want us to remember today.

Someone else's behavior does not have to determine ours.

If they gossip—

We don't have to gossip back.

If they insult us—

We don't have to become cruel.

If they lie—

We don't have to lie.

If they refuse to apologize—

We can still guard our own hearts.

If they choose bitterness—

We don't have to join them.

Friend, don't hand someone else the power to decide what kind of person you're going to become.

THEIR ACTIONS BELONG TO THEM.

YOUR RESPONSE BELONGS TO YOU.

Ask the Holy Spirit:

“Help me respond in a way that reflects Jesus.”

❤️ JESUS LOVED US WHEN WE WERE DIFFICULT TO LOVE

Romans 5:8 says:

“But God commendeth his love toward us, in that, while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.”

Jesus didn't wait until we had everything together.

He loved us while we were sinners.

That doesn't mean God approves of sin.

The cross itself shows how seriously sin matters.

But it also shows the incredible depth of God's love and mercy.

And when we remember how much grace we have received, it should change how we view others.

We may not be able to fix them.

We may not be able to trust them.

We may not even be able to remain close to them.

But with God's help—

WE CAN REFUSE TO HATE THEM.

🪞 NOW LET’S TURN THE MIRROR AROUND

Here's a thought we may not like quite as much.

We spend a lot of time thinking about the difficult people in our lives.

But have we ever stopped to consider:

“HAVE I EVER BEEN THE DIFFICULT PERSON?”

Have my words hurt somebody?

Have I been impatient?

Have I failed to apologize?

Have I misunderstood someone's intentions?

Have I held onto pride?

Have I needed someone else to show me grace?

Ouch.

Friend, humility changes the conversation.

We're all works in progress.

That doesn't excuse harmful behavior.

But remembering our own need for grace can help us extend grace more freely.

🙏 TODAY’S PRAYER

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for loving me with a love I could never earn.

Lord, today I bring before You the people who have hurt, disappointed, betrayed, or mistreated me.

You know every detail.

You know what happened.

You know how deeply it hurt.

Help me forgive without pretending the hurt wasn't real.

Give me wisdom to know when boundaries are necessary.

Protect me from bitterness.

Help me stop replaying old offenses.

Teach me to pray for those who have hurt me.

And Lord, search my own heart too.

Show me where I have hurt others.

Give me humility to apologize when I am wrong.

Help me love like Jesus—not through my own strength, but through the work of the Holy Spirit within me.

Let love grow where bitterness once lived.

In Jesus' precious name,

Amen. ❤️

❤️ TODAY’S LOVE CHALLENGE

Think of one difficult person.

You don't have to call them.

You don't have to message them.

You don't have to reopen a relationship that needs healthy distance.

Simply pray for them.

Then pray for yourself:

“Lord, remove anything from my heart that does not look like You.”

And if God brings to mind someone you have hurt, consider whether there is an apology you need to make.

Sometimes spiritual growth looks like forgiving.

Sometimes it looks like saying:

“I WAS WRONG. PLEASE FORGIVE ME.”

Both require grace.

💭 TODAY’S QUESTION

Ask yourself honestly:

Is there someone whose actions are still controlling what grows in my heart?

If bitterness has taken root, don't condemn yourself.

Bring it to Jesus.

Healing can take time.

But don't keep watering bitterness and expect the Fruit of the Spirit to flourish beside it.

GIVE THAT PLACE TO GOD.

📖 SCRIPTURE TO REMEMBER

“Be not overcome of evil, but overcome evil with good.”Romans 12:21 (KJV)

🌻 CLOSING THOUGHT

Friend, some people are easy to love.

Others will send you straight to your prayer closet! 😊

But perhaps those difficult relationships reveal just how much we need the Holy Spirit.

We cannot always love difficult people through our own strength.

But we can pray:

“Jesus, love them through me.”

Remember:

❤️ Love doesn't mean approval.

❤️ Forgiveness doesn't automatically mean restored trust.

❤️ Boundaries aren't bitterness.

❤️ Prayer doesn't require proximity.

❤️ And loving someone doesn't mean allowing them to continually harm you.

But through Christ—

We can refuse revenge.

We can release hatred.

We can pray.

We can choose grace.

We can protect our hearts from bitterness.

And we can allow the Holy Spirit to grow something better.

❤️ WHEN LOVE IS HARD, STAY CLOSE TO JESUS.

Because sometimes the greatest evidence of spiritual fruit isn't how we love those who love us—

IT'S HOW WE RESPOND TO THOSE WHO DON'T.

Have a beautifully blessed Tuesday, Bible Study Family! 💜❤️🍇✝️

😊 TOMORROW — OCTOBER 7

We move to the next Fruit of the Spirit:

😊 JOY — WHEN HAPPINESS FADES BUT JESUS REMAINS

“…the joy of the LORD is your strength.”Nehemiah 8:10 (KJV)

What's the difference between happiness and biblical joy?

Can we have joy while grieving?

Can we have joy during difficult circumstances?

And where does our joy come from when life isn't going the way we hoped?

Tomorrow we're going to discover that biblical joy runs much deeper than a good day.

Until tomorrow—

Love deeply.

Forgive wisely.

Pray faithfully.

Keep healthy boundaries when necessary.

And stay close to Jesus. ❤️🌿
