☕ Daily Thought: Watch the Little Things

Good morning, family and friends. ❤️
Today I want to share something that I first heard about 42 years ago in a youth meeting. Our minister told us a little story that has stayed with me all these years. The older I get and the longer I walk with the Lord, the more I understand the lesson behind it.
There was a little girl who was walking home from school one day when she discovered what she thought was a cat living in a barn near her home.
She was so excited!
Every day after school, she would hurry to the barn to visit and play with her new little friend. There was an unusual smell, but because she was around it little by little every day, she didn't really notice it anymore.
Then one day, her little "cat" had babies!
She was so excited that she ran home to tell her momma about the kittens.
But there was a problem.
What that little girl had been playing with wasn't a cat at all. It was a momma skunk!
Little by little, that smell had gotten on her. She had been around it so long and so gradually that she didn't even realize how badly it smelled anymore.
That story has never left me because sin can work the same way.
Most people don't wake up one morning and decide, "Today I'm going to completely walk away from God."
It often begins with the little things.
"It's just this once."
"Everybody else is doing it."
"It's not really that bad."
"God understands."
"It's only one little thing."
But one compromise makes the next compromise easier.
Before long, something that once bothered our spirit doesn't seem quite as troubling anymore. We become accustomed to what we once recognized as wrong.
That's why I have chosen a very simple standard for my own life:
If the Bible says it is wrong, then it is wrong.
As I have grown in my Christian walk, that conviction has affected more than what I say or do. It also makes me think carefully about what I watch, where I go, what I participate in, and even what businesses, entertainment, or organizations I personally choose to support.
There are places I won't shop and things I won't financially support because I don't want to knowingly participate in or promote something that violates my biblical convictions.
Someone may say, "But it's only one little thing."
That's exactly what makes me think about that little skunk.
The Bible gives us another picture:
"Take us the foxes, the little foxes, that spoil the vines..." — Song of Solomon 2:15 KJV
Notice that Scripture says the little foxes.
Sometimes we're watching for the huge attack while ignoring the tiny compromises chewing away at the vine.
And I don't have to compromise my convictions because I'm afraid I won't have what I need.
"But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus." — Philippians 4:19 KJV
If honoring God means I have to find another store, another form of entertainment, another activity, or simply go without something, I want to choose obedience.
This isn't about looking down on someone else. It's about examining my own heart and asking:
Lord, have I become comfortable with something that once bothered my spirit?
Have I allowed a "little fox" into my vineyard?
Have I gotten so accustomed to something that I no longer recognize its influence in my life?
We have to stand strong against the little things, because if we continually open the door to compromise, eventually the whole family can move in—and sometimes we don't recognize what has happened until the damage has already been done.
Today my prayer is:
Lord, give me discernment. Show me the little things I have overlooked. Give me courage to stand upon Your Word even when the world says I'm taking it too seriously. Help me never become so comfortable around sin that I stop recognizing its presence. Guard my heart, my home, and my family, and help me live a life that honors You. In Jesus' name, Amen.
Don't underestimate the little things.
Little compromises can become big strongholds—but little acts of obedience can become a lifetime of faithfulness. ❤️
