LORD, HELP ME TO STOP GOSSIP BEFORE IT STARTS
LORD, HELP ME TO STOP GOSSIP BEFORE IT STARTS
I have been thinking about something that I believe we all need to examine from time to time—gossip.
What exactly is gossip?
Sometimes we think gossip only means telling a lie about someone. But gossip can also be repeating something that is completely true when it was never our information to share.
Sometimes it begins so innocently.
“Did you hear what happened?”
“I probably shouldn't tell you this, but…”
“Don't tell anybody I told you…”
“I'm only telling you so you can pray…”
Before we know it, we are discussing someone else's struggles, mistakes, marriage, children, finances, health, problems, or private circumstances.
And lately I have found myself praying:
Lord, help me.
Help me to understand that I do not need to tell everything I know.
Just because I know something doesn't mean I have permission to share it.
Just because someone told me something doesn't mean I need to tell someone else.
Just because something is true doesn't mean it needs to come out of my mouth.
📖 “A talebearer revealeth secrets: but he that is of a faithful spirit concealeth the matter.” — Proverbs 11:13 KJV
Lord, please forgive me for the times I have spoken when I should have remained silent.
Forgive me for the times I have repeated something that wasn't my story to tell.
Forgive me for the times I have disguised gossip as concern.
And forgive me for the times I have listened to something that I really didn't need to know.
Your Word warns us:
📖 “The words of a talebearer are as wounds, and they go down into the innermost parts of the belly.” — Proverbs 18:8 KJV
Words can hurt.
Words can destroy trust.
Words can damage friendships, families, churches, ministries, workplaces, and reputations.
Once words leave our mouths, we cannot gather them back up.
So Lord, help me recognize gossip before I participate in it.
When I am about to share something I shouldn't, let the Holy Spirit stop me.
Remind me:
You don't need to tell that. That isn't your story to share. You don't need to repeat what you heard.Pray about it instead.
📖 “Whoso keepeth his mouth and his tongue keepeth his soul from troubles.” — Proverbs 21:23 KJV
But Lord, don't just guard my mouth.
Guard my ears too.
Give me the strength to resist listening when someone begins telling me something I really don't need to know.
Help me have enough courage to say:
“Maybe we shouldn't talk about this.”
Or:
“I really don't need to know that.”
Or simply change the conversation.
Because gossip cannot continue very far when there is nobody willing to listen.
📖 “Where no wood is, there the fire goeth out: so where there is no talebearer, the strife ceaseth.” — Proverbs 26:20 KJV
Lord, teach me that I don't have to know everything.
I don't have to have an opinion about everything.
I don't have to repeat everything.
And I don't have to defend myself by telling everything I know about someone else.
Sometimes I simply need to be still and trust You.
📖 “Set a watch, O LORD, before my mouth; keep the door of my lips.” — Psalm 141:3 KJV
Before I speak about another person, Lord, help me ask myself:
Is it true?Is it necessary? Is it kind?Is it mine to tell? Will sharing it help the situation?Would I say it if that person were standing beside me?Most importantly—will my words honor God?
Your Word says:
📖 “Let no corrupt communication proceed out of your mouth, but that which is good to the use of edifying…” — Ephesians 4:29 KJV
Lord, I don't want to use my words to tear people down.
I want my words to encourage.
I want my words to comfort.
I want my words to bring peace.
I want people to know they can trust me with their hearts, their struggles, their prayers, and their private conversations.
📖 “A soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.” — Proverbs 15:1 KJV
So today, instead of looking around and asking, “Who do I know that gossips?”
I want to look in the mirror and pray:
“Lord, start with me.”
Show me where I need to change.
Convict me before I speak.
Give me discernment before I listen.
Help me keep confidential things confidential.
Help me pray instead of repeat.
Help me encourage instead of criticize.
Help me bring peace instead of division.
And when someone trusts me with something private, help me remember:
Their story is not mine to tell.
🙏 Lord, put a guard over my mouth, wisdom in my heart, and discernment in my ears. Forgive me for the times I have participated in gossip, whether by speaking it or simply listening to it. Give me the strength to resist it and the wisdom to recognize it. Let the words that come from my mouth honor You and build others up. Help me become someone people can trust.
In Jesus' name, Amen. ❤️
📖 “Let the words of my mouth, and the meditation of my heart, be acceptable in thy sight, O LORD, my strength, and my redeemer.” — Psalm 19:14 KJV
❤️ Food for Thought:If it isn't your story to tell, don't tell it.If you don't need to know it, don't listen to it.If someone is hurting, pray for them instead of talking about them. And when you're tempted to speak—ask God first.
Lord, help us all to do better, beginning with me. 🙏❤️
