OLD DINING CHAIR → BEAUTIFUL GARDEN PLANTER!
Good morning, crafting friends! 💜 Today we're taking something you see ALL the time at yard sales, estate sales, and thrift stores—a lonely old dining chair—and turning it into something absolutely adorable for the porch or garden!
You know that chair that's missing its mate, has an ugly seat, or looks like it's seen better days?
DON'T THROW IT AWAY! 🌸
We're turning it into a Vintage Chair Flower Planter!
🛍️ WHAT YOU'LL NEED
🪑 Old wooden chair🪴 Flowerpot or hanging basket that fits the seat opening🪚 Jigsaw, if the seat needs to be cut🧽 Sandpaper🎨 Outdoor paint🖌️ Paintbrush🛡️ Exterior clear sealer🌸 Flowers🌿 Potting soil🎀 Optional ribbon, stencil, or small sign
🌿 STEP 1 — FIND YOUR CHAIR
This project is PERFECT for a mismatched chair that isn't worth restoring as dining furniture.
Look for one with a pretty back, turned legs, carved details, or lots of character.
💡 Thrifting Tip: Don't worry about an ugly finish. We're shopping for the shape and sturdiness, not the color!
🪚 STEP 2 — CREATE THE PLANTER OPENING
Remove the upholstered seat if it has one.
If it's a solid wooden seat, trace around the flowerpot or basket and carefully cut an opening slightly smaller than the rim so the planter rests securely in the chair.
Safety first: An adult comfortable with power tools should handle the cutting.
Don't want to cut the chair? No problem! Place a pretty container directly on the seat instead.
🎨 STEP 3 — GIVE IT A MAKEOVER
Now let's make that old chair BEAUTIFUL!
Try:
🤍 Distressed White🌿 Sage Green💜 Lavender🩵 Cottage Blue🌻 Sunny Yellow🌸 Dusty Rose
For outdoor use, make sure your paint and final sealer are suitable for exterior furniture.
🌺 STEP 4 — ADD THE FLOWERS!
Fill your planter with beautiful summer blooms.
Try:
🌸 Petunias🌺 Geraniums🌼 Marigolds💜 Verbena🌿 Sweet Potato Vine🌸 Calibrachoa
I LOVE adding something trailing so it spills over the sides of the chair!
✨ STEP 5 — ADD SOME PERSONALITY
Now make it yours!
Add a little sign saying:
🌸 Welcome to My Garden
🌿 Bloom Where You're Planted
🐝 Bee Happy
💜 Faith Grows Here
🌻 Hello Sunshine
You could even hang a tiny watering can or garden tool from the chair back.
♻️ DON'T STOP AT FLOWERS!
Your old chair could also hold:
🌿 An herb garden🍓 Strawberries🦋 Butterfly-friendly flowers🌵 Succulents🐦 A bird-feeding station
Imagine several mismatched chairs scattered throughout a cottage garden, each painted a different color and overflowing with flowers! 😍
💰 TODAY'S THRIFTING CHALLENGE
See if you can find a lonely chair for $10 or less.
Estate sales are especially good places to look because sometimes one chair is left after the rest of a dining set is gone.
Remember our rule:
Don't just see what it IS—look for what it COULD BECOME! 💡♻️
💜 TODAY'S INSPIRATION
I love projects like this because they remind us that something doesn't lose its value simply because its original purpose has changed.
Sometimes a new season calls for a new purpose.
"To every thing there is a season, and a time to every purpose under the heaven:"— Ecclesiastes 3:1 (KJV)
🌸 NOW IT'S YOUR TURN!
If you found an old wooden chair for $5 today, what would YOU do with it?
🌺 Flower Planter🌿 Herb Garden🐦 Bird Station🎨 Restore It💡 Something totally unexpected!
📸 And show us those projects! We LOVE before-and-after pictures. Your old chair makeover might be exactly the inspiration someone else needs for their next thrift-store treasure.
Happy Wednesday, Happy Thrifting & Happy Creating! 💜🪑🌸🌿
