LIFT YOUR SHIELD
Faith That Stands Between You and the Fiery Darts
September Theme: Put On the Whole Armor of God
Week Four: The Gospel of Peace, Shield of Faith & Helmet of Salvation
š TODAY'S THEME SCRIPTURE
āAbove all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.āEphesians 6:16 (KJV)
ā GOOD MORNING & HAPPY WEDNESDAY!
I was sitting here thinking this morning about how quickly life can change.
You can wake up feeling wonderful.
Have your coffee.
Read your Bible.
Spend time in prayer.
And feel ready to take on the day.
Then the phone rings.
You receive unexpected news.
Something happens at work.
A family member is struggling.
A bill arrives that you weren't expecting.
Someone says something hurtful.
And suddenly, the peace you felt that morning is being challenged.
Have you ever noticed how quickly one difficult situation can lead to a hundred worried thoughts?
āWhat if this gets worse?ā
āWhat if things don't work out?ā
āWhat if God doesn't answer my prayer?ā
āWhat if I can't handle this?ā
Friend, that's why we need the Shield of Faith.
Because the enemy would love for us to become so focused on what could happen that we forget who is holding us.
But here's what I want us to remember today:
FAITH DOESN'T MEAN THE BATTLE ISN'T REAL.
FAITH MEANS WE KNOW WHO IS GREATER THAN THE BATTLE.
š TODAY'S SCRIPTURE READING
Ephesians 6:10ā18 ā The whole armor of God
Hebrews 11:1ā6 ā Understanding faith
Romans 10:17 ā Faith comes by hearing God's Word
Psalm 28:7 ā The Lord is our strength and shield
Psalm 91:1ā16 ā Trusting God's protection
Mark 9:14ā29 ā Lord, help thou mine unbelief
Matthew 14:22ā33 ā Peter walking on the water
2 Corinthians 5:7 ā Walking by faith, not by sight
š”ļø 1. WHAT IS THE SHIELD OF FAITH?
When Paul described the armor of God, he included a shield.
A Roman soldier's large shield could help protect him from arrows and other weapons during battle.
The soldier didn't carry it simply because it looked impressive.
He carried it because he needed protection.
And Paul tells us:
āTAKING THE SHIELD OF FAITH.ā
Notice something important.
We have to take it up.
Faith is not merely something we talk about when life is going well.
It is something we exercise when life becomes difficult.
When fear comesā
Lift your shield.
When discouragement comesā
Lift your shield.
When temptation comesā
Lift your shield.
When doubt begins whisperingā
Lift your shield.
When yesterday's failures try to convince you that God cannot use youā
LIFT YOUR SHIELD!
š„ 2. WHAT ARE THE FIERY DARTS?
Ephesians 6:16 tells us that the Shield of Faith helps us quench the fiery darts of the wicked.
Those darts can be understood as attacks intended to weaken our trust in God and draw us away from obedience.
Sometimes they come through temptation.
Sometimes through accusations.
Sometimes through lies.
Sometimes through discouragement.
Sometimes through doubts about God's goodness.
Now, I want to be careful here.
Not every difficult thought is a spiritual attack.
Sometimes we're tired.
Sometimes we're grieving.
Sometimes we're overwhelmed.
Sometimes our minds are processing difficult circumstances.
But regardless of where a troubling thought begins, we can bring it before God and examine it in the light of His Word.
The enemy would love for us to accept every fearful thought as truth.
But we learned something important during our study of the Belt of Truth:
JUST BECAUSE A THOUGHT ENTERS YOUR MIND DOESN'T MEAN IT DESERVES A PLACE IN YOUR HEART.
ā¤ļø 3. FAITH IS NOT PRETENDING WE AREN'T AFRAID
This is something I want somebody to hear today.
You can love Jesus and still feel afraid.
You can have faith and still cry.
You can trust God and still have questions.
You can believe His promises and still experience difficult emotions.
Psalm 56:3 says:
āWhat time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.ā
David didn't say:
āI will never be afraid.ā
He said:
āWHEN I AM AFRAID, I WILL TRUST.ā
That is faith.
Faith doesn't always remove the feeling of fear immediately.
Sometimes faith is the decision we make while fear is still present.
It's saying:
āLord, I don't understand this.ā
āLord, I don't know what tomorrow holds.ā
āLord, I don't know how this is going to work out.ā
āBUT I KNOW I CAN TRUST YOU.ā
š 4. DON'T LET THE WAVES BECOME BIGGER THAN JESUS IN YOUR THINKING
Think about Peter walking on the water.
In Matthew 14, Jesus came toward the disciples during a storm.
Peter stepped out of the boat and began walking toward Him.
But Matthew 14:30 says:
āBut when he saw the wind boisterous, he was afraid; and beginning to sink, he cried, saying, Lord, save me.ā
Peter began focusing on the storm.
And fear took over.
But here's something beautiful.
When Peter began sinking, he knew who to call.
āLORD, SAVE ME.ā
And Jesus reached out His hand.
Friend, maybe you've been looking at the waves.
The medical report.
The financial situation.
The family problem.
The unanswered prayer.
The uncertainty.
And those things are beginning to look bigger than everything else.
Today, lift your eyes toward Jesus.
The storm may still be there.
But so is your Savior.
š”ļø 5. THE SHIELD OF FAITH WORKS WITH THE BELT OF TRUTH
Remember what we studied earlier this month.
The Belt of Truth helps us recognize what God has said.
The Shield of Faith helps us trust what God has said.
These pieces of armor work together.
When fear says:
āYOU'RE ALL ALONE.ā
Truth reminds us:
ā...I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.āHebrews 13:5 (KJV)
Faith answers:
āI BELIEVE GOD IS WITH ME.ā
When discouragement says:
āYOU'LL NEVER GET THROUGH THIS.ā
Truth reminds us:
āMy grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.ā2 Corinthians 12:9 (KJV)
Faith answers:
āGOD WILL GIVE ME THE GRACE I NEED.ā
When guilt says:
āGOD COULD NEVER FORGIVE YOU.ā
Truth reminds us:
āIf we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins...ā1 John 1:9 (KJV)
Faith answers:
āI WILL CONFESS, REPENT, AND TRUST HIS PROMISE.ā
TRUTH TELLS US WHAT GOD HAS SAID.
FAITH CHOOSES TO BELIEVE HIM.
š± 6. FAITH GROWS WHEN WE SPEND TIME IN GOD'S WORD
Romans 10:17 says:
āSo then faith cometh by hearing, and hearing by the word of God.ā
Friend, we cannot continually feed our fears and expect our faith to become stronger without giving attention to God's Word.
If we spend all day listening to everything that could go wrong, our hearts may become overwhelmed.
That's why we need time with Jesus.
Open your Bible.
Read His promises.
Study His faithfulness.
Remember what He has already brought you through.
Pray.
Worship.
Surround yourself with people who encourage you to trust God.
Sometimes we need to turn down the noise of the world so we can give our attention to the truth of Scripture.
FEED YOUR FAITH WITH GOD'S WORD.
š 7. SOMETIMES OUR PRAYER IS, āLORD, HELP THOU MINE UNBELIEFā
I love the honesty of the father in Mark chapter 9.
He brought his son to Jesus.
He desperately needed help.
And when Jesus spoke to him about believing, the father cried out:
āLord, I believe; help thou mine unbelief.āMark 9:24 (KJV)
Isn't that a prayer we can all relate to?
āLord, I believe You can.ā
āBut I'm struggling.ā
āLord, I know You're faithful.ā
āBut I'm afraid.ā
āLord, I trust Your Word.ā
āBut I need help with these doubts.ā
Friend, you don't have to pretend before God.
Bring your honest heart to Him.
āLORD, I BELIEVE. HELP THOU MINE UNBELIEF.ā
That is not a prayer to be ashamed of.
It is a prayer of someone turning toward Jesus for help.
š„ 8. FAITH DOESN'T GUARANTEE THAT EVERY SITUATION WILL TURN OUT THE WAY WE WANT
This is important.
Sometimes people are made to feel that if they have enough faith, every sickness will disappear, every financial problem will be solved immediately, and every difficult situation will end exactly as they hoped.
But that's not what Scripture promises.
Hebrews 11 tells us about people who experienced wonderful deliverance through faith.
It also tells us about faithful people who endured tremendous suffering.
Their difficult circumstances did not mean God had abandoned them.
And friend, if you've prayed for something and the answer wasn't what you hopedā
That does not automatically mean you lacked faith.
Sometimes God's plan looks different from ours.
Sometimes His answer is not what we expected.
Sometimes we have to trust Him while carrying questions we cannot answer.
FAITH IS NOT CONFIDENCE THAT GOD WILL DO EVERYTHING MY WAY.
FAITH IS CONFIDENCE THAT GOD IS WORTHY OF MY TRUST.
š¤ 9. SOMETIMES WE NEED SOMEONE TO HELP US STAND
In battle, soldiers didn't always stand alone.
They depended upon one another.
And we need Christian fellowship too.
There may be days when your faith feels strong.
You encourage everybody around you.
You pray for others.
You remind them of God's promises.
But there may also be days when you're the one who needs encouragement.
You may need someone to pray with you.
Someone to remind you of Scripture.
Someone to sit beside you.
Someone to say:
āI KNOW THIS IS HARD, BUT YOU DON'T HAVE TO WALK THROUGH IT ALONE.ā
Friend, needing encouragement doesn't mean your faith has failed.
It means you're human.
God created us for fellowship.
So don't be afraid to ask someone to pray with you.
And when you see another believer struggling, help them lift their shield.
āļø 10. REMEMBER WHO YOUR FAITH IS IN
This may be the most important part of today's study.
Our faith isn't in faith itself.
Our faith isn't in positive thinking.
Our faith isn't in our ability to control every situation.
Our faith is in Jesus Christ.
Psalm 28:7 says:
āThe LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusted in him, and I am helped...ā
Notice:
āTHE LORD IS MY STRENGTH AND MY SHIELD.ā
Friend, the strength of our faith comes from the One we're trusting.
And Jesus is faithful.
When we're weakā
He remains strong.
When we're uncertainā
He remains trustworthy.
When circumstances changeā
His character does not.
MY CONFIDENCE IS NOT IN MY ABILITY TO HOLD EVERYTHING TOGETHER.
MY CONFIDENCE IS IN JESUS CHRIST.
š TODAY'S REFLECTION QUESTIONS
Take a few quiet moments with the Lord today.
What situation is testing my faith right now?
Am I allowing fearful thoughts to control my decisions?
Have I been focusing more on the storm than on Jesus?
What promise from God's Word do I need to remember today?
Am I spending enough time in Scripture to strengthen my faith?
Is there an area where I need to pray, āLord, help thou mine unbeliefā?
Have I confused faith with expecting God to do everything my way?
Who can I encourage in their faith today?
Is there someone I need to ask to pray with me?
What would lifting my Shield of Faith look like in my current situation?
š TODAY'S PRAYER
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for another beautiful Wednesday.
Thank You for Your faithfulness, Your love, and Your promises.
Lord, today I want to lift my Shield of Faith.
You know every situation I'm facing.
You know the worries I've been carrying.
You know the prayers I've been praying.
You know the questions I haven't been able to answer.
And You know the fears I've been trying to hide.
Father, help me trust You.
When fear comes, remind me of Your Word.
When discouragement comes, remind me of Your faithfulness.
When temptation comes, strengthen me to choose what honors You.
When doubt comes, help me bring my questions to You instead of allowing them to pull me away.
And when I begin focusing more on the storm than on my Savior, gently turn my eyes back toward Jesus.
Lord, I believe.
Help thou mine unbelief.
Strengthen my faith through Your Word.
Surround me with people who will encourage me to keep walking with You.
And help me become someone who strengthens others when their faith is being tested.
Thank You that my confidence is not in my own strength.
My confidence is in You.
In Jesus' precious name,
Amen.
š¼ TODAY'S ARMOR CHALLENGE
š”ļø THE FAITH SHIELD EXERCISE
Today, we're going to practice lifting our Shield of Faith.
Take a piece of paper and draw a shield.
Inside the shield, write:
GOD IS FAITHFUL.
Then write down three things.
1. THE BATTLE
What situation is testing your faith?
2. THE TRUTH
Find a Scripture that reminds you of God's character or His promises.
3. THE RESPONSE
Write one sentence declaring how you will trust God in this situation.
For example:
THE BATTLE: I'm worried about tomorrow.
THE TRUTH: ā...I will never leave thee, nor forsake thee.ā ā Hebrews 13:5 (KJV)
THE RESPONSE: āI do not know what tomorrow holds, but I know God will be with me.ā
Keep that Scripture somewhere you can see it today.
When fear begins speakingā
Read it.
Pray it.
Believe it.
LIFT YOUR SHIELD!
š SCRIPTURE TO REMEMBER
āAbove all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.āEphesians 6:16 (KJV)
And remember:
āWhat time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.āPsalm 56:3 (KJV)
š”ļø TODAY'S ARMOR CHECK
š”ļø BELT OF TRUTH: Am I standing on what God has said?
ā¤ļø BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS: Am I choosing what honors Jesus?
š£ SHOES OF PEACE: Am I allowing His peace to guide my walk?
š”ļø SHIELD OF FAITH: Am I trusting God when fear and discouragement come?
š WORD CHECK: What Scripture am I holding onto today?
āļø JESUS CHECK: Is my confidence in Him?
š TODAY'S ENCOURAGEMENT
Friend, maybe you're facing something today that feels bigger than you.
Maybe you've been praying for an answer.
Maybe you're waiting on news.
Maybe you're carrying a burden for someone you love.
Maybe you're simply tired of fighting the same battle.
I want to remind you:
YOU DON'T HAVE TO HAVE ALL THE ANSWERS TO TRUST THE ONE WHO DOES.
You don't have to know how everything will work out.
You don't have to pretend you're not afraid.
You don't have to be strong every moment.
You just need to keep turning toward Jesus.
When your hands are tremblingā
Lift your shield.
When your eyes are filled with tearsā
Lift your shield.
When you don't understandā
Lift your shield.
When the enemy whispers that God has forgotten youā
Lift your shield.
Because the same God who carried you through yesterday is still with you today.
š» CLOSING THOUGHT
I want to leave you with this today.
Sometimes we think strong faith means never questioning, never worrying, and never feeling afraid.
But maybe strong faith looks a little different.
Maybe it looks like a mother praying over her child while waiting for medical answers.
Maybe it looks like someone grieving a loved one while still believing God is good.
Maybe it looks like a husband or wife trusting God through a difficult season.
Maybe it looks like someone facing financial uncertainty and still choosing honesty and obedience.
Maybe it looks like a person who has fallen getting back up and saying:
āLORD, I'M STILL FOLLOWING YOU.ā
Friend, faith isn't always loud.
Sometimes faith is a whispered prayer.
Sometimes faith is opening your Bible when your heart is heavy.
Sometimes faith is getting out of bed and trusting God with another day.
Sometimes faith is simply saying:
āLORD, I DON'T UNDERSTAND, BUT I TRUST YOU.ā
And that is a beautiful way to lift your shield.
So todayā
š”ļø FASTEN THE BELT OF TRUTH.
ā¤ļø PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.
š£ WALK IN THE GOSPEL OF PEACE.
š”ļø LIFT YOUR SHIELD OF FAITH.
āļø AND KEEP YOUR EYES ON JESUS.
š TOMORROW ā THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 24
QUENCHING THE FIERY DARTS
When Fear, Doubt, and Discouragement Come Flying
āWhat time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.āPsalm 56:3 (KJV)
Tomorrow we'll continue studying the Shield of Faith and learn how to recognize and respond to the fiery darts that try to weaken our trust in God.
We'll talk about replacing lies with Scripture, resisting temptation, and refusing to allow fear to make our decisions.
Until tomorrow:
Trust God's Word.
Remember His faithfulness.
Bring Him your fears.
Encourage someone else.
And keep your Shield of Faith lifted.
Have a beautifully blessed Wednesday! May God strengthen your faith, steady your heart, and remind you that you never face life's battles alone. šš”ļøšāļø
