BE A PEACEMAKER
Bringing God's Peace Into a Divided World
September Theme: Put On the Whole Armor of God
Week Four: The Gospel of Peace, Shield of Faith & Helmet of Salvation
š Today's Theme Scripture
āBlessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.ā
ā Matthew 5:9 (KJV)
ā GOOD MORNING & HAPPY TUESDAY!
I was sitting here thinking about how quickly a peaceful day can turn into a stressful one.
You can wake up in a wonderful mood.
Have your coffee.
Read your Bible.
Spend time in prayer.
And feel ready to take on the day.
Then somebody says something.
Somebody cuts you off in traffic.
A coworker gets on your last nerve.
A family member brings up something you thought was settled.
Or you open Facebook and see a comment that makes you want to type a response before you've even finished reading it!
And suddenlyā
There goes your peaceful morning.
But here's something I believe we need to remember:
PEACE ISN'T ONLY SOMETHING WE RECEIVE FROM JESUS.
IT'S SOMETHING WE ARE CALLED TO CARRY INTO THE WORLD.
Yesterday we talked about putting on our shoes of peace.
Today we're going to learn how to walk in them.
Because it's one thing to talk about peace while sitting alone with our Bible and coffee.
It's another thing to demonstrate that peace when somebody tests our patience!
And friend, sometimes the greatest spiritual battles aren't happening somewhere far away.
Sometimes they're happening right there in our own hearts as we decide how we're going to respond.

Colossians 3:12ā15 ā Letting God's peace rule
Hebrews 12:14ā15 ā Following peace and guarding against bitterness
Ephesians 6:10ā18 ā The whole armor of God
šļø 1. WHAT IS A PEACEMAKER?
Jesus said:
āBlessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.āā Matthew 5:9 (KJV)
Notice He didn't say:
āBlessed are the people who never disagree with anybody.ā
He didn't say:
āBlessed are the people who allow everybody to walk all over them.ā
And He didn't say:
āBlessed are the people who pretend nothing is wrong.ā
He said:
PEACEMAKERS.
A peacemaker is someone who actively seeks peace in a way that honors God.
Sometimes that means remaining quiet.
Sometimes it means speaking up.
Sometimes it means apologizing.
Sometimes it means forgiving.
Sometimes it means having a difficult conversation.
And sometimes it means recognizing that an argument is going nowhere and choosing not to participate.
A PEACEMAKER ISN'T SOMEONE WHO NEVER FACES CONFLICT.
A PEACEMAKER IS SOMEONE WHO SEEKS GOD'S WISDOM IN THE MIDDLE OF IT.
ā¤ļø 2. PEACE DOESN'T MEAN EVERYBODY GETS THEIR WAY
This is something we need to understand.
Sometimes we confuse keeping peace with making everybody happy.
We say yes when we need to say no.
We agree with something we know is wrong.
We remain silent because we don't want someone to become upset.
We allow unhealthy behavior to continue because we don't want confrontation.
But that's not always peace.
Sometimes that's fear.
Sometimes that's people-pleasing.
Sometimes that's avoiding a problem that needs to be addressed.
Romans 12:18 says:
āIf it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.ā
Notice those words:
āIF IT BE POSSIBLE.ā
We can control our own choices.
We cannot control everybody else's reactions.
You can speak kindly, tell the truth, apologize when necessary, and still have someone who refuses peace.
Friend, you're responsible for your conduct before God.
You're not responsible for controlling another person's heart.
DO YOUR PART. LEAVE THEIR PART WITH GOD.
š£ļø 3. A SOFT ANSWER CAN CHANGE THE DIRECTION OF A CONVERSATION
Proverbs 15:1 says:
āA soft answer turneth away wrath: but grievous words stir up anger.ā
Have you ever noticed how quickly a conversation can escalate?
One person raises their voice.
The other person raises theirs.
One person makes a hurtful comment.
The other responds with something even more hurtful.
And before long, both people are saying things they may regret.
But what happens when one person chooses a different response?
What happens when someone says:
āI WANT TO UNDERSTAND WHAT YOU'RE SAYING.ā
āLET'S TALK ABOUT THIS WHEN WE'RE BOTH CALMER.ā
āI'M SORRY FOR MY PART.ā
āI DON'T WANT US TO HURT EACH OTHER.ā
A soft answer doesn't guarantee that the other person will respond well.
But it can keep us from adding more fuel to the fire.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO MATCH SOMEBODY ELSE'S ANGER.
š”ļø 4. THE SHOES OF PEACE HELP US STAND FIRM
Remember, we're studying spiritual armor.
The shoes of peace aren't simply about being nice.
They're about being spiritually prepared.
When our feet are grounded in the Gospel, we don't have to let every insult, disagreement, or difficult circumstance knock us off course.
We know who we belong to.
We know what God's Word says.
We know where our peace comes from.
And we know that our mission is greater than winning every argument.
The enemy would love for us to become so distracted by conflict that we forget the Gospel we're supposed to carry.
But we can choose differently.
I CAN STAND FIRM IN TRUTH WITHOUT BECOMING HARSH.
I CAN DISAGREE WITHOUT BECOMING HATEFUL.
I CAN SET BOUNDARIES WITHOUT SEEKING REVENGE.
I CAN CHOOSE PEACE WITHOUT COMPROMISING GOD'S WORD.
š 5. NOT EVERY BATTLE REQUIRES YOUR PARTICIPATION
Now, this is something I've had to remind myself of more than once!
Just because somebody invites you into an argument doesn't mean you have to accept the invitation.
Just because somebody makes a comment doesn't mean you have to respond.
Just because somebody posts something you disagree with doesn't mean you have to spend the next two hours trying to change their mind.
Sometimes the wisest response is silence.
Proverbs 17:28 says:
āEven a fool, when he holdeth his peace, is counted wise: and he that shutteth his lips is esteemed a man of understanding.ā
There are times to speak.
And there are times to be quiet.
Ask yourself:
āIS THIS A CONVERSATION GOD WANTS ME TO HAVE?ā
āAM I TRYING TO HELPāOR AM I JUST UPSET?ā
āWILL MY RESPONSE BRING CLARITY OR MORE CONFUSION?ā
āAM I DEFENDING TRUTH OR DEFENDING MY PRIDE?ā
Sometimes the most peaceful thing we can do is put the phone down, close the computer, and go spend a little time with Jesus.
šæ 6. PEACEMAKING BEGINS IN OUR OWN HEARTS
James 3:17 says:
āBut the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.ā
Isn't that beautiful?
Godly wisdom is peaceable.
Gentle.
Full of mercy.
And good fruits.
But we cannot consistently bring peace into situations if we are continually feeding bitterness within ourselves.
Yesterday we talked about receiving the peace of Jesus.
Today we need to ask:
āWHAT AM I ALLOWING TO RULE MY HEART?ā
Am I rehearsing old arguments?
Am I imagining conversations that haven't happened?
Am I holding onto offenses?
Am I constantly expecting the worst from someone?
Am I allowing anger to control my words?
Friend, sometimes before God changes the situation around us, He begins changing the way we're responding to it.
LORD, LET YOUR PEACE BEGIN IN ME.
ā¤ļø 7. FORGIVENESS AND RECONCILIATION ARE NOT ALWAYS THE SAME THING
I want to pause here because this is important.
Being a peacemaker does not mean you must give someone unlimited access to your life.
You can forgive someone and still recognize that trust needs to be rebuilt.
You can release bitterness and still maintain healthy boundaries.
You can pray for someone and still recognize that a relationship is not safe or healthy in its current form.
Reconciliation involves more than one person.
It may require repentance, accountability, changed behavior, and time.
And sometimes the other person is unwilling to participate.
Romans 12:18 reminds us:
āAS MUCH AS LIETH IN YOU.ā
Do what is right before God.
But don't confuse peace with pretending that harm never happened.
FORGIVENESS RELEASES BITTERNESS.
WISDOM DECIDES ACCESS.
āļø 8. JESUS IS OUR EXAMPLE OF PEACE AND TRUTH
Jesus was loving.
Jesus was compassionate.
Jesus was merciful.
But Jesus also spoke truth.
He corrected wrongdoing.
He confronted hypocrisy.
He sometimes withdrew from crowds.
He didn't allow every demand placed upon Him to determine His next step.
And yet He remained perfectly obedient to the Father.
That teaches us something.
We don't have to choose between truth and love.
Ephesians 4:15 speaks of:
ā...speaking the truth in love...ā
That's the balance we should seek.
Truth without love can become harsh.
Love without truth can become unwillingness to address what matters.
But when we allow Jesus to guide us, we can speak honestly while still treating people with dignity.
š» 9. SOMETIMES YOU NEED TO BE THE FIRST ONE TO MAKE PEACE
Now, here's a difficult question.
Have you ever waited for somebody else to apologize first?
You know you were wrong about something.
Maybe not everything.
But something.
And you think:
āWELL, THEY NEED TO APOLOGIZE TOO!ā
Maybe they do.
But what if God is asking you to take responsibility for your part?
What if He's asking you to say:
āI SHOULDN'T HAVE SPOKEN TO YOU THAT WAY.ā
āI WAS WRONG TO REPEAT THAT.ā
āI LET MY ANGER CONTROL MY WORDS.ā
āWILL YOU FORGIVE ME?ā
Friend, humility is not weakness.
Sometimes it takes tremendous strength to be the first person to say:
āI WANT TO MAKE THIS RIGHT.ā
You don't have to accept responsibility for things you didn't do.
But you can take responsibility for the things you did.
š£ 10. CARRY PEACE WHEREVER YOUR FEET TAKE YOU
Yesterday we put on our shoes of peace.
Today, let's actually walk in them.
When you go to workā
Carry peace.
When you enter your homeā
Carry peace.
When you speak with your familyā
Carry peace.
When you walk into churchā
Carry peace.
When you encounter someone who is hurtingā
Carry peace.
When someone tests your patienceā
Ask God to help you respond with peace.
And when you have an opportunity to share the Gospelā
Tell someone about the One who gives peace that this world cannot provide.
LET YOUR FEET CARRY THE GOOD NEWS.
LET YOUR WORDS REFLECT HIS LOVE.
LET YOUR LIFE POINT PEOPLE TOWARD JESUS.
š TODAY'S REFLECTION QUESTIONS
Take some quiet time with the Lord and consider these questions.
Am I a peacemaker, or do I sometimes contribute to unnecessary conflict?
Do I confuse keeping peace with making everybody happy?
Is there a conversation where I need to respond more gently?
Have I been participating in arguments that aren't helping anyone?
Am I holding onto bitterness or rehearsing old offenses?
Is there someone I need to apologize to for my part in a disagreement?
Do I understand the difference between forgiveness and restoring trust?
Am I allowing God's peace to rule my heart?
Do my words reflect both truth and love?
Where can I carry the peace of Jesus today?
š TODAY'S PRAYER
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for another beautiful Tuesday.
Thank You for the peace that comes through Jesus Christ.
Lord, help me become a peacemaker.
Not someone who simply avoids every difficult conversation, but someone who seeks Your wisdom in every situation.
When I am frustrated, help me respond with patience.
When I am hurt, keep bitterness from taking root.
When I need to speak truth, help me speak it with love.
When I need to apologize, give me humility.
When I need to forgive, give me strength.
When I need to establish a boundary, give me wisdom.
And when an argument is going nowhere, help me recognize when it's time to be quiet.
Father, search my heart.
Show me where pride, anger, or resentment may be interfering with Your peace.
Help me stop trying to control everybody else's responses and focus on honoring You through my own choices.
Prepare my feet with the Gospel of Peace.
Let me carry Your love into my home, my workplace, my church, and every place You lead me today.
And may someone experience the peace of Jesus through my words and actions.
In Jesus' precious name,
Amen.
š¼ TODAY'S ARMOR CHALLENGE
šļø THE PEACEMAKER CHALLENGE
Today, we're going to practice three simple things.
Today's Peacemaker Challenge
PAUSE BEFORE RESPONDING
When something frustrates you today, take a moment to pray before you speak or type.
MAKE ONE PEACEFUL CHOICE
Offer an apology, show patience, speak kindly, or step away from an unnecessary argument.
SHARE THE PEACE OF JESUS
Encourage someone with a Scripture, a prayer, or a reminder that God is with them.
0 of 3 completed
At the end of the day, ask yourself:
āDID I BRING MORE PEACE INTO THE WORLD TODAY?ā
š SCRIPTURE TO REMEMBER
Matthew 5:9 (KJV)
āBlessed are the peacemakers: for they shall be called the children of God.ā
And remember:
āIf it be possible, as much as lieth in you, live peaceably with all men.āā Romans 12:18 (KJV)
š”ļø TODAY'S ARMOR CHECK
š”ļø BELT OF TRUTH: Am I speaking what is true?
ā¤ļø BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS: Am I responding in a way that honors God?
š£ SHOES OF PEACE: Am I carrying peace into the places I go?
šļø HEART CHECK: Am I allowing bitterness or resentment to grow?
š£ļø WORD CHECK: Am I speaking truth in love?
āļø GOSPEL CHECK: Am I pointing people toward Jesus?
š TODAY'S ENCOURAGEMENT
Friend, you may encounter someone today who isn't very pleasant.
They may be impatient.
They may be hurting.
They may be carrying something you know nothing about.
That doesn't excuse mistreatment.
But it can remind us to respond with compassion when possible.
Sometimes a gentle word can change the direction of someone's day.
Sometimes a simple:
āARE YOU OKAY?ā
can open the door to a conversation they desperately needed.
Sometimes choosing not to argue is the greatest kindness we can offer.
And sometimes speaking the truth with love is exactly what a situation needs.
Ask God for wisdom.
Because peacemaking isn't about having the perfect response every time.
It's about allowing Jesus to guide our hearts.
š» CLOSING THOUGHT
I want to leave you with this today.
We live in a world where people are often encouraged to have the last word.
Win the argument.
Prove the point.
Get even.
Make sure everybody knows their side of the story.
But Jesus calls us to something different.
He calls us to be peacemakers.
Not peace pretenders.
Not people pleasers.
Not doormats.
PEACEMAKERS.
People who know how to stand in truth without becoming cruel.
People who know how to forgive without abandoning wisdom.
People who know how to apologize without making excuses.
People who know when to speak and when to be silent.
People who carry the peace of Jesus into a world that desperately needs Him.
So today, before you respondā
Before you argueā
Before you send that messageā
Before you allow anger to take overā
Ask yourself:
āWILL THIS BRING GLORY TO GOD?ā
And then remember:
YOU DON'T HAVE TO WIN EVERY ARGUMENT.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO HAVE THE LAST WORD.
YOU DON'T HAVE TO MATCH SOMEONE ELSE'S ANGER.
You can choose peace.
You can choose wisdom.
You can choose love.
And you can let Jesus guide your steps.
š”ļø FASTEN THE BELT OF TRUTH.
ā¤ļø PUT ON THE BREASTPLATE OF RIGHTEOUSNESS.
š£ WALK IN THE GOSPEL OF PEACE.
šļø AND BE A PEACEMAKER.
š TOMORROW ā WEDNESDAY, SEPTEMBER 23
WEEK FOUR ⢠SHIELD OF FAITH
LIFT YOUR SHIELD
Faith That Stands Between You and the Fiery Darts
Ephesians 6:16 (KJV)
āAbove all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.ā
Tomorrow we'll begin studying the Shield of Faithāwhat it means to trust God when fear, doubt, discouragement, and temptation come against us.
We'll talk about why faith doesn't mean pretending the battle isn't real. It means choosing to trust the One who is greater than the battle.
Until tomorrow:
Receive His peace.
Speak truth in love.
Choose wisdom over unnecessary arguments.
Forgive without abandoning healthy boundaries.
Carry the Gospel wherever your feet take you.
And let the peace of Jesus guide your heart.
Have a beautifully blessed Tuesday! May God fill your heart with peace, your words with kindness, and your day with opportunities to share His love. šš”ļøš£šļøšāļø
