“When You Miss the Person You Used to Be”

📖 Today's Scripture — KJV

“And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”

— 2 Corinthians 12:9

🌿 Devotional Thought

Good morning, sweet friends.

As I sit here thinking about grief this morning, something is on my heart that we don't always talk about.

Sometimes, when we lose someone we love, we aren't only grieving the person who is gone.

We are also grieving the life we had before they left.

The family gatherings that looked different.

The holidays that felt complete.

The plans we made together.

The ordinary mornings when we didn't know how blessed we were just to have everyone here.

And sometimes, if we're being truthful, we miss the person we used to be.

The person who laughed without feeling guilty.

The person who didn't dread certain dates on the calendar.

The person who could walk into a room without immediately noticing who was missing.

The person who didn't carry a sadness that others couldn't always see.

Have you ever looked in the mirror and thought:

“Lord, I don't even recognize myself anymore”?

Friend, God recognizes you.

He knows who you were before grief, who you are today, and who you are becoming.

And He has never stopped loving you through any of it.

💜 Grief Changes Us, but It Doesn't Have to Define Us

I have learned that grief doesn't always leave us the way it found us.

Some of us become quieter.

Some become more compassionate.

Some begin appreciating the smallest things.

Some find themselves wanting to spend more time with family.

Others discover that things they once thought were important really don't matter nearly as much as they believed.

And sometimes we find ourselves crying over something that wouldn't have bothered us before.

That's part of learning to live after loss.

But please remember something:

You are more than the worst thing that ever happened to you.

You are still God's child.

You still have a purpose.

You still have love to give.

You still have people who need you.

And there are still beautiful memories waiting to be made.

You don't have to become exactly who you were before grief to have a meaningful life again.

God can help you discover who you are becoming.

🌷 God's Grace Is Sufficient for This Version of You, Too

I love the words of 2 Corinthians 12:9:

“My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness.”

Sometimes we think we need to get ourselves together before God can use us.

We think we need to stop crying.

Stop hurting.

Stop questioning.

Stop struggling.

But God never said His strength would only be available when we felt strong.

He said His strength is made perfect in weakness.

That means on the days when you feel like you can conquer the world, His grace is sufficient.

And on the days when getting out of bed feels like an accomplishment, His grace is still sufficient.

God doesn't need you to pretend to be strong. He wants you to trust the One who is.

🕊️ Don't Spend Today Trying to Recreate Yesterday

Sometimes we spend so much time wishing life could return to the way it was that we forget God is still giving us life today.

I understand wanting yesterday back.

I understand wishing for one more conversation.

One more hug.

One more family dinner.

One more opportunity to say, “I love you.”

But we cannot live in yesterday.

We can treasure it.

We can remember it.

We can thank God for it.

But we must allow ourselves to live today.

That doesn't mean leaving our loved ones behind.

It means carrying their love forward.

You can honor yesterday without missing the blessings God has placed in front of you today.

🌸 You Are Still Becoming

Maybe you aren't the person you were five years ago.

Maybe your heart has been through things you never imagined you could survive.

Maybe you have learned to smile while carrying sorrow.

Maybe you have discovered that your testimony can encourage someone else.

And maybe, just maybe, God is taking the very places where life broke your heart and teaching you how to reach someone whose heart is breaking today.

Not because your loss was good.

Not because you needed to experience that pain.

But because God can bring beauty from ashes.

He can use your compassion.

Your understanding.

Your testimony.

Your willingness to sit beside someone and say:

“I don't have all the answers, but I know what it feels like to hurt, and I will sit here with you.”

Sometimes that is exactly the ministry someone needs.

🙏 Monday Morning Prayer

Heavenly Father,

This morning, I lift up every person who is grieving not only someone they love but also the life they once knew.

Lord, sometimes we miss the person we used to be.

We miss the laughter that came easily.

We miss the family gatherings before the empty chairs.

We miss the ordinary days when everyone was still here.

Help us understand that although grief may change us, it does not change Your love for us.

Remind us that Your grace is sufficient, even on the days when we feel weak.

Help us stop comparing who we are today with who we were before loss.

Give us the courage to embrace the life You have placed before us without feeling guilty for enjoying it.

Teach us to carry our loved ones' memories with gratitude.

Help us make new memories while treasuring the old ones.

And Lord, if You can use our testimony to help someone else who is hurting, give us the compassion and courage to be there for them.

Thank You for never leaving us.

Thank You for Your grace.

Thank You for Jesus and the hope of Heaven.

In Jesus' precious Name,

Amen.

🌻 Today's Grief Support Challenge

Today, I want you to think about three things.

💜 Something you miss about your life before grief.

Give yourself permission to acknowledge it.

🌷 Something God has helped you survive since your loss.

Remember how far He has carried you.

🕊️ Something you would like to experience again.

Maybe it's laughter, friendship, travel, church fellowship, a new hobby, or simply enjoying a peaceful morning.

Then pray:

“Lord, thank You for who I was, help me embrace who I am, and guide me as I become who You are calling me to be.”

You don't have to have everything figured out today.

Just take the next step with Jesus.

💜 Agape Love Monday Reminder 💜

You May Never Be the Same, but God Is Still the Same.

Grief may have changed the way you see the world, but it has never changed the way God sees you. You are still loved. You are still needed. You still have purpose. And you are still being held by the same loving Heavenly Father who carried you through every difficult yesterday.

💜 Treasure who you were.

🌷 Give grace to who you are.

🕊️ Trust God with who you are becoming.

“You don't have to be who you were before grief. You just have to keep walking with the One who has never changed.”
