“It’s Okay to Feel Joy Again”

📖 Scripture — KJV

“Weeping may endure for a night, but joy cometh in the morning.”Psalm 30:5

🌿 Devotional Thought

Have you ever caught yourself laughing after losing someone you love?

For just a moment, you forgot about the heaviness.

Something was funny.

Someone made you smile.

You enjoyed a meal.

You had a wonderful day with family.

And then suddenly a thought entered your mind:

“How can I be happy when they're not here?”

Sometimes guilt follows joy into a grieving heart.

We almost feel as though continuing to enjoy life means we're leaving the person we love behind.

Friend, please hear this today:

You are allowed to smile again.

Your joy does not erase their memory.

Your laughter does not mean you stopped loving them.

And having a good day does not mean grief is over.

It simply means God allowed a little sunshine to break through the clouds.

Let yourself feel it.

💜 You Don't Have to Prove Your Love by Staying Sad

Sometimes we unknowingly measure love by pain.

If I stop crying, maybe I didn't love them enough.

If I enjoy myself, maybe I'm forgetting them.

If I make new memories, maybe I'm replacing the old ones.

But love doesn't work that way.

You don't have to stay miserable to prove that someone mattered.

Your love for them is already written upon your heart.

Nothing about smiling today changes yesterday.

Nothing about laughing today erases their place in your story.

You can miss someone deeply and still have a beautiful day.

Both can be true.

🌷 Imagine What They Would Want for You

Think about the person you miss.

Would they want you to stop laughing forever?

Would they want every family gathering to remain sad?

Would they want you to feel guilty every time something good happened?

I imagine most of the people we love would say:

“Please live.”

Go on the trip.

Have coffee with your friend.

Celebrate the birthday.

Play with the grandchildren.

Go to church.

Sing.

Garden.

Create.

Laugh until your stomach hurts.

Take the picture.

Enjoy the sunset.

Keep living the life God has given you.

That doesn't leave them behind.

You carry their love with you.

🌿 Joy and Grief Can Sit Together

Healing isn't replacing grief with happiness.

Often, it is discovering that grief and joy can exist together.

You may laugh during the day and cry that evening.

You may enjoy a family gathering and still notice the empty chair.

You may hear a funny story about your loved one and laugh while tears run down your face.

That's grief.

And that's love.

Your heart is big enough for both.

You don't have to choose between remembering them and enjoying today.

🕊️ Don't Be Afraid of the Firsts That Feel Good

We talk a lot about the painful firsts after loss.

The first birthday.

The first anniversary.

The first Thanksgiving.

The first Christmas.

But there are other firsts too.

The first time you laugh really hard.

The first day you realize you didn't cry.

The first trip you enjoy.

The first new tradition.

The first morning you wake up feeling peaceful.

Those moments can feel strange.

Maybe even uncomfortable.

But they are not betrayals.

They are little signs that life is beginning to grow around your grief.

Receive them with gratitude.

🌸 Joy Doesn't Mean You're Finished Grieving

You can have a wonderful Thursday and wake up missing them terribly Friday.

That's okay.

Healing isn't a straight line.

One good day doesn't mean every difficult day is behind you.

And one difficult day doesn't erase all your progress.

Take each day as it comes.

When tears come—

let them.

When laughter comes—

let that come too.

God can meet you in both.

💜 Let Their Memory Bring Joy Too

Not every memory has to end in tears.

Remember something funny they did.

Tell the story everybody has heard a hundred times.

Make their favorite recipe.

Look at the ridiculous old photograph.

Remember the vacation when everything went wrong but became one of your favorite memories.

Let yourself laugh.

There is something beautiful about reaching the place where you can say:

“I miss you so much—and remembering you still makes me smile.”

That's love becoming a treasured memory.

🙏 Thursday Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for the moments when joy begins to return.

Sometimes we feel guilty when we laugh, smile, or enjoy life because someone we love is no longer here.

Remind us that joy does not mean forgetting.

Help us receive the good moments You give us without guilt.

When laughter comes, let us laugh.

When tears come, hold us.

Help us treasure old memories while making new ones.

Thank You for the people who are still here to love.

Teach us to enjoy their presence, make memories, take pictures, give hugs, and say “I love you” often.

And when guilt whispers that we shouldn't be happy, remind us that our loved one's place in our heart is secure.

Thank You for Jesus.

Thank You for the hope of Heaven.

And thank You that even after the darkest nights, You can still bring morning.

In Jesus' precious Name,

Amen.
