âWhen Grief Is Filled With âI Wish I HadâŚââ
đ Scripture â KJV
âCasting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.ââ 1 Peter 5:7
đż Devotional Thought
There are two little words that can become very heavy after someone we love is gone:
âI wishâŚâ
I wish I had called more.
I wish I had visited one more time.
I wish I had taken more pictures.
I wish I had listened more closely.
I wish I hadn't gotten upset over something so small.
I wish our last conversation had been different.
I wish I had asked more questions.
I wish I had told them one more time how much I loved them.
Grief has a way of taking moments from the past and replaying them over and over.
And if we aren't careful, the things we wish we had done differently can become louder than all the things we did right.
Today, friend, I want to remind you:
Don't allow one regret to erase a lifetime of love.
đ You Didn't Know It Would Be the Last Time
Most of us don't know when a moment will become the last one.
We don't know which phone call will be the final phone call.
Which hug will be the last hug.
Which family dinner will become the last time everyone sits together.
Which photograph will become one of the last photographs.
We live ordinary days believing there will be another tomorrow.
That doesn't make you a bad person.
It makes you human.
You loved imperfectly because we all love imperfectly.
Only God loves perfectly.
So when your mind begins saying:
âIf only I hadâŚâ
Answer it with:
âI did the best I knew how to do with the day I was given.â
Then place the rest into God's hands.
đˇ Remember the Whole Story
Grief sometimes takes one difficult memory and puts a magnifying glass over it.
But your relationship was bigger than one moment.
Think about the entire story.
The laughter.
The conversations.
The meals.
The trips.
The birthdays.
The holidays.
The hugs.
The ordinary afternoons.
The inside jokes.
The times you showed up.
The times you helped.
The times you said:
âI love you.â
Don't let one chapter rewrite the entire book.
Love was there too.
And love deserves to be remembered.
đż Give God the Things You Cannot Change
There are some things we can fix.
If we hurt someone who is still here, we can apologize.
If a relationship is broken, we can try to repair it.
But grief sometimes leaves us with things we cannot go back and change.
That's when we must learn to surrender.
First Peter tells us:
âCasting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.â
That includes regret.
That includes guilt.
That includes the conversations we wish had gone differently.
That includes all the âif onlys.â
Imagine placing each one into God's hands today.
âLord, I cannot change yesterday. Please help me stop carrying what I cannot change.â
đď¸ Let Yesterday Teach You How to Love Today
We cannot return to yesterday.
But we can allow yesterday to change today.
If you wish you had called moreâ
call someone today.
If you wish you had hugged longerâ
hug someone today.
If you wish you had forgiven soonerâ
forgive today.
If you wish you had taken more picturesâ
take them today.
If you wish you had said âI love youâ moreâ
say it today.
Let regret become a teacher instead of a prison.
We can't change yesterday, but with God's help, we can love better today.
đ¸ You Are Allowed to Forgive Yourself
Sometimes we readily believe God can forgive other people, but struggle to extend grace to ourselves.
Maybe there is something you genuinely wish you had done differently.
Acknowledge it.
Learn from it.
Give it to God.
And then stop punishing yourself every day for something you cannot change.
God doesn't want you living permanently chained to yesterday.
His grace reaches backward into our regrets and forward into our tomorrows.
Receive that grace today.
đ Remember Them With Love, Not Only Regret
When you think about your loved one today, deliberately choose a beautiful memory.
Hear their laugh in your mind.
Remember their smile.
Think about something funny they said.
Remember a time you knew they loved you.
Remember a moment when you showed them love.
And whisper:
âThank You, Lord, for the love we shared.â
There may always be things you wish had been different.
But there were beautiful things too.
Don't lose those memories beneath the weight of regret.
đ Wednesday Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Today I bring You all of my âI wish I hads.â
The things I wish I had said.
The things I wish I had done.
The moments I wish I could change.
You know every detail of my heart and every part of my story.
Help me learn from yesterday without living imprisoned by it.
When regret becomes louder than love, remind me of the entire story.
Remind me of the laughter.
The conversations.
The hugs.
The ordinary moments.
And all the love that was shared.
Lord, I cannot change yesterday, so today I place it into Your hands.
Help me forgive myself where I need to.
And let what I've learned teach me to love the people who are still here more intentionally.
Help me call.
Help me listen.
Help me forgive.
Help me take the picture.
Help me give the hug.
Help me say âI love youâ while I still have today.
Thank You for Your grace.
Thank You for Jesus.
And thank You for the hope of Heaven.
In Jesus' precious Name,
Amen.

Then finish with this prayer:
âLord, I give You what I cannot change. Help me love well today.â

Don't let one thing you wish you had done differently erase all the love you gave. You didn't know which moment would be the last. You were human, and you loved imperfectly just as we all do. Give yesterday to God. Receive His grace. Then take what grief has taught you and use it to love the people around you today.
đ Release yesterday.
đˇ Remember the love.
đď¸ Receive God's grace.
đ¤ Love well today.
You cannot rewrite yesterdayâbut with God's help, you can let yesterday teach you how precious today really is. đ
