“There Is No Time Limit on Missing Someone”
📖 Scripture — KJV
“The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart.”— Psalm 34:18
🌿 Devotional Thought
Sometimes one of the hardest parts of grief isn't only missing the person we love.
It's feeling like everyone else expects us to stop missing them.
Weeks pass.
Months pass.
Years pass.
Life continues moving around us, and eventually people stop asking:
“How are you doing?”
Their name may come up less often.
The phone calls checking on you become fewer.
Everyone seems to return to normal.
But your “normal” changed the day your loved one left this earth.
And there may still be days when your heart whispers:
“I miss you so much.”
Friend, please hear this today:
There is no expiration date on love.
And because love remains, there will sometimes still be moments of grief.
💜 You Don't Have to Apologize for Remembering
Maybe someone has said:
“It's been a long time.”
Or:
“You need to move on.”
Perhaps no one has actually said those words, but you've placed that expectation upon yourself.
You think:
“Why am I still crying?”
“Shouldn't I be over this?”
But grief isn't something we simply “get over.”
We learn, with God's help, how to carry it differently.
The tears may come less frequently.
The memories may begin bringing more smiles than sorrow.
Life grows around the grief.
But the love?
The love remains.
Don't apologize for speaking their name.
Don't apologize for remembering their birthday.
Don't apologize because a song still brings tears.
They mattered.
They were part of your life.
And remembering someone you love is nothing to be ashamed of.
🌷 God Doesn't Rush the Brokenhearted
Psalm 34:18 doesn't say:
“The Lord is near to the brokenhearted for six months.”
It simply says:
"The LORD is nigh unto them that are of a broken heart."
God doesn't carry a stopwatch into your grief.
He doesn't look at the calendar and say:
“You should be finished with this by now.”
He meets you where you are.
If today is difficult, He's near.
If tomorrow is wonderful, He's near.
If ten years from now a memory suddenly brings tears—
He will still be near.
What comfort there is in knowing we serve a God who never becomes impatient with our hearts.
🌿 You Can Heal and Still Miss Them
Healing doesn't mean forgetting.
Healing doesn't mean you never cry again.
Healing doesn't mean their absence stops mattering.
Sometimes healing looks like this:
“I miss you, but I can smile when I remember you.”
“I wish you were here, but I'm thankful for the years we had.”
“Today hurts, but I know tomorrow may be easier.”
“I will always love you, but I am learning how to live again.”
Grief and gratitude can live together.
So can sorrow and joy.
So can missing yesterday and looking forward to tomorrow.
Your heart is capable of carrying both.
🕊️ Speak Their Name
One of the greatest gifts we can give a grieving person is allowing them to talk about the person they love.
So today, let's do exactly that.
Speak their name.
Tell us something funny about them.
Tell us what they loved.
Share a favorite photograph.
Tell us what they taught you.
Tell us about the meal they cooked, the song they sang, the joke they always told, or the little habit that used to drive you crazy but you'd give anything to see again.
Their life was more than their death.
Let's remember how they lived.
🌸 Don't Miss the People Who Are Still Here
There is another lesson grief teaches us.
Life is precious.
While we remember those who have gone before us, let's also love the people God has placed around us today.
Make the phone call.
Visit Momma.
Sit with Daddy.
Hug the grandchildren.
Tell your spouse you love them.
Have coffee with the friend.
Take the picture.
Stay a little longer around the dinner table.
Someday, today's ordinary moments may become someone's treasured memories.
Love well while you have today.
🙏 Thursday Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for being patient with our grieving hearts.
Thank You that You never tell us we should be “over” missing someone we love.
For the person whose loss happened recently, draw near.
For the person who has carried grief for decades, draw near.
For those facing birthdays, anniversaries, holidays, and unexpected reminders, bring comfort.
Help us understand that remembering isn't failure and tears aren't weakness.
Teach us to carry our memories with gratitude while continuing to embrace the life You have given us.
Help us speak the names of those we love and keep their stories alive.
And while we remember those who are gone, remind us to love deeply the people who are still here.
Thank You for Jesus and for the eternal hope we have through Him.
In Jesus' precious Name,
Amen.
