“New Month, Same God, Fresh Mercy”
📖 Scripture — KJV
"It is of the LORD'S mercies that we are not consumed, because his compassions fail not. They are new every morning: great is thy faithfulness."— Lamentations 3:22–23
🌿 Devotional Thought
Today we turn the calendar to September.
A new month.
Soon the air will become cooler, the leaves will begin changing, and another season will arrive.
For someone walking through grief, changing seasons can stir emotions we weren't expecting.
Maybe you remember what this time of year looked like when your loved one was here.
Fall drives.
Football games.
Warm drinks.
Family gatherings.
Church activities.
Decorating the house.
Preparing for holidays.
Sometimes something as simple as cooler air can carry a memory.
And suddenly, your heart whispers:
“I wish you were here.”
If that's where you find yourself today, remember:
The season may change, but God does not.
The same God who carried you through yesterday is with you on this first day of September.
💜 Fresh Mercy for a New Month
One of the most beautiful promises in Scripture is found in Lamentations:
“They are new every morning.”
God gives us fresh mercy.
Not once a year.
Not once a month.
Every morning.
That means you don't have to have enough strength today for the entire month of September.
You only need today's grace.
Tomorrow morning?
There will be new mercy waiting.
The next day?
More mercy.
And on the days when grief feels especially heavy?
Mercy will still be there.
God doesn't expect you to store enough strength to carry yourself through every difficult day ahead.
He asks you to depend upon Him one day at a time.
🍂 A New Season May Bring Old Memories
As fall approaches, certain memories may begin returning.
Maybe your loved one adored this season.
Maybe there are traditions you always shared.
Perhaps the upcoming months contain birthdays, anniversaries, Thanksgiving, Christmas, or other dates that already make your heart feel uneasy.
Don't borrow tomorrow's grief today.
Jesus will meet you when that day arrives.
Today, simply live September 1.
Drink your coffee.
Say your prayers.
Love your family.
Do your work.
Take the walk.
Enjoy the sunshine.
Remember your loved one.
And trust God with September 2 when it comes.
One day at a time.
🌻 It's Okay to Bring Them Into the New Season
Turning the calendar doesn't mean leaving anyone behind.
Bring their memory with you.
Decorate with something they loved.
Make their favorite fall recipe.
Tell their stories around the dinner table.
Look at the photographs.
Listen to their favorite music.
Share their traditions with another generation.
Speak their name.
A new season doesn't erase an old love.
You can make new memories while treasuring the ones already written upon your heart.
There is room for both.
🕊️ Maybe September Can Hold Something Beautiful Too
Grief sometimes makes us afraid to hope.
We think hoping for something good somehow dishonors what we've lost.
It doesn't.
Perhaps September will contain a moment that makes you laugh.
A prayer will be answered.
Someone will surprise you with kindness.
You'll experience a beautiful sunset.
A grandchild will make you smile.
You'll hear a sermon that speaks directly to your heart.
Or one morning you'll realize:
“Today doesn't hurt quite as much.”
Receive those moments.
They aren't evidence that you're forgetting.
They are evidence that God is still giving you life.
🙏 September 1 Prayer
Heavenly Father,
Thank You for bringing us into another month.
For some of us, turning the calendar is exciting.
For others, it reminds us of how much time has passed since someone we love went Home.
Meet every grieving heart today.
As the seasons begin to change, comfort us when familiar sights, smells, songs, and traditions bring memories rushing back.
Thank You that Your mercy is new every morning.
Give us today's strength for today's journey.
Keep us from worrying about the difficult days that may be ahead.
When those days arrive, remind us that You will be there too.
Help us carry the memories of those we love into this new season while remaining open to the new blessings You still have for us.
Let September be filled with Your presence, Your peace, Your mercy, and Your hope.
Most of all, keep our hearts fixed upon Jesus.
In Jesus' precious Name,
Amen.
