“When You Feel Forgotten in Your Grief”
📖 Today's Scripture — KJV
“When my father and my mother forsake me, then the LORD will take me up.”
— Psalm 27:10
🌿 Devotional Thought
Good morning, sweet friends.
As I sit here with my coffee this morning, I am thinking about something that doesn't always get talked about when it comes to grief.
What happens when everyone else seems to have moved on, but your heart is still hurting?
In the beginning, there may have been phone calls.
People bringing food.
Friends stopping by.
Cards in the mailbox.
Messages asking how you were doing.
People reminding you that they were praying for you.
And then, little by little, life returned to normal for everyone else.
The phone stopped ringing as often.
The cards stopped coming.
People stopped asking about your loved one.
And you found yourself sitting in the quiet, wondering:
“Does anyone remember that I'm still grieving?”
Friend, if that's where you are today, I want to remind you of something precious.
God has not forgotten you.
He has not forgotten your loved one.
And He has not forgotten the broken places in your heart.
đź’ś Grief Doesn't End When Everyone Stops Asking
Sometimes people assume that because we are smiling, we must be doing better.
Because we went back to work, we must be okay.
Because we attended a family gathering, we must be moving on.
Because we laughed at something funny, our hearts must have healed.
But grief doesn't work that way.
You can go to work and still miss someone terribly.
You can sit in church and cry during a hymn.
You can enjoy time with your grandchildren and still wish someone were there to see them.
You can laugh with friends and go home to an empty house.
And you can be thankful for the life God has given you while still grieving the life you once knew.
Just because someone looks okay doesn't mean they no longer need encouragement, prayer, or a listening ear.
Sometimes the strongest-looking person in the room is carrying a heart full of sorrow.
🌷 God Remembers the Tears Others Never See
I love Psalm 56:8:
“Thou tellest my wanderings: put thou my tears into thy bottle: are they not in thy book?”
What a beautiful picture of God's love for us.
The tears you cried at the funeral mattered.
But so do the tears you cried six months later.
The tears that came on their birthday.
The tears that surprised you in the grocery store.
The tears that fell while driving down the road.
The tears that came when you found something with their handwriting on it.
And the tears that nobody else knows about.
God sees them all.
You may feel forgotten by the world, but you have never been overlooked by your Heavenly Father.
He knows exactly where you are today.
And He is still holding you.
🕊️ Sometimes We Need to Tell People We Still Need Them
There is something else I want to share this morning.
Sometimes the people around us don't know what to say.
They may be afraid of bringing up our loved one's name because they don't want to make us cry.
They may assume we want privacy.
They may believe we are doing better because we haven't said otherwise.
That doesn't always mean they don't care.
Sometimes people simply don't understand what grief looks like after the funeral is over.
And sometimes we need to tell them.
It's okay to say:
“I'm having a hard day. Could you pray for me?”
“Would you mind sitting with me for a little while?”
“I would love to talk about Momma today.”
“I'm really missing my husband.”
“Could we have coffee sometime this week?”
You don't have to pretend you're fine just because time has passed.
Needing someone doesn't make you weak. It makes you human.
God created us for fellowship, love, and connection.
And sometimes healing begins when we allow someone else to sit beside us in the difficult moments.
🌸 Be the Person Who Remembers
Now, I want to turn this around for just a moment.
Is there someone in your life who has lost a loved one?
Maybe their loss happened recently.
Maybe it happened years ago.
When was the last time you checked on them?
Not just on the anniversary.
Not just during the holidays.
Not just when they post something sad on Facebook.
But on an ordinary Wednesday morning.
Sometimes a simple message can mean more than we realize.
“Good morning! Just wanted you to know I'm thinking about you.”
“I know you still miss your Momma. I'm praying for you today.”
“I was remembering something funny your husband used to say.”
“Would you like to get together for coffee?”
“Tell me a story about your son.”
Friend, never underestimate the ministry of remembering.
Sometimes the greatest gift you can give a grieving heart is reminding them that the person they love has not been forgotten.
You don't have to have all the answers.
You don't have to fix their grief.
You don't even have to know what to say.
Sometimes you simply need to show up.
đź’ś Their Name Still Deserves to Be Spoken
One of the things I love about grief support is giving people a place where they can talk about the people they miss.
We don't have to pretend they never existed.
We don't have to avoid their names.
We don't have to act as though remembering them is somehow unhealthy.
Tell the stories.
Share the photographs.
Remember their birthdays.
Laugh about the funny things they did.
Talk about their faith.
Remember the lessons they taught you.
And let another generation know who they were.
Their life was more than the day they died.
Let's remember how they lived.
Let's remember how they loved.
Let's remember the difference they made.
And let's continue carrying that love forward.
🙏 Wednesday Morning Prayer
Heavenly Father,
This morning, I lift up every person who feels forgotten in their grief.
Lord, You know how lonely this journey can become after the phone calls stop, the cards stop coming, and everyone else seems to return to their normal routines.
For the person sitting alone this morning, please draw near.
For the widow missing her husband, bring comfort.
For the husband missing his wife, bring peace.
For the parent missing a child, wrap Your loving arms around them.
For those missing Momma, Daddy, grandparents, siblings, friends, and loved ones, remind them that You see every tear.
Help us understand that grief doesn't follow a calendar.
Give us the courage to reach out when we need someone.
And Lord, help us become more aware of the hurting people around us.
Place someone on our hearts today who needs encouragement.
Help us make the phone call.
Send the message.
Offer the hug.
Share the memory.
And remind someone that they are not forgotten.
Thank You for never growing tired of hearing our prayers.
Thank You for loving us through every season of grief.
Thank You for Jesus and the hope of Heaven.
In Jesus' precious Name,
Amen.
