You Don't Have to Catch Everything the Enemy Throws at You

“Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.”— Ephesians 6:16 (KJV)

☕ GOOD MONDAY MORNING!

Good morning, friends! 💜

It's Monday!

The alarm went off.

The coffee is brewing.

The weekend disappeared approximately twelve minutes after it started. 😂☕

And here we are again.

A brand-new week.

Before we start thinking about everything that needs to be done, let's spend a few minutes thinking about what God has already done.

Yesterday we talked about guarding our hearts.

Today we're talking about something Paul calls:

🔥 FIERY DARTS.

What are they?

Sometimes they're thoughts that seem to come out of nowhere.

“What if everything goes wrong?”

“You're not good enough.”

“God isn't going to answer.”

“Look at what everybody else has.”

“You'll never get past this.”

Sometimes it's temptation.

Sometimes discouragement.

Sometimes doubt.

Sometimes accusation.

Sometimes fear.

And sometimes one tiny comment from another person gets into our minds at 9:00 in the morning...

and we're still having an imaginary argument with them at 9:00 that night. 😂

Friends...

STOP CATCHING THE DARTS!

God gave us a shield.

📖 TODAY'S BIBLE READING

Psalm 91:1–7 (KJV)

“He that dwelleth in the secret place of the most High shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty.”“I will say of the LORD, He is my refuge and my fortress: my God; in him will I trust.”“Surely he shall deliver thee from the snare of the fowler, and from the noisome pestilence.”“He shall cover thee with his feathers, and under his wings shalt thou trust: his truth shall be thy shield and buckler.”“Thou shalt not be afraid for the terror by night; nor for the arrow that flieth by day;”“Nor for the pestilence that walketh in darkness; nor for the destruction that wasteth at noonday.”“A thousand shall fall at thy side, and ten thousand at thy right hand; but it shall not come nigh thee.”

Notice verse four:

“HIS TRUTH SHALL BE THY SHIELD...”

Our faith isn't pretending problems don't exist.

Faith says:

“The problem is real—but so is my God.”

🛡️ ARMOR OF GOD STUDY

🔥 What Is a Fiery Dart?

In ancient warfare, arrows could be prepared with combustible material and set on fire before being launched toward the enemy.

The goal wasn't simply to hit something.

It was to set something on fire.

Now think about that spiritually.

One little spark of:

🔥 Fear

🔥 Jealousy

🔥 Anger

🔥 Lust

🔥 Bitterness

🔥 Doubt

🔥 Offense

🔥 Discouragement

🔥 Unforgiveness

If we allow it to stay...

It can spread.

One thought becomes an attitude.

One offense becomes bitterness.

One temptation becomes a habit.

One worry becomes a whole night without sleep.

One comparison becomes dissatisfaction with everything God has already given us.

That's why Paul says:

TAKE THE SHIELD OF FAITH.

Don't wait until the arrow hits.

Raise the shield.

💜 TODAY'S FAITH THOUGHT

Faith Doesn't Mean You Never Feel Afraid

Sometimes Christians think faith means never experiencing fear.

But courage isn't the absence of fear.

Sometimes courage is saying:

“I'm afraid, but I'm trusting God anyway.”

Faith doesn't mean:

“Nothing bad can happen.”

Faith says:

“Whatever happens, God will be with me.”

Faith doesn't mean:

“I know exactly how this will work out.”

Faith says:

“God knows.”

Faith doesn't mean:

“I understand why this happened.”

Faith says:

“I still trust His character.”

Sometimes your shield is raised with a strong voice.

Other times it's raised through tears while whispering:

“Jesus, I trust You.”

Both count.

🏡 HERITAGE CORNER

🧺 Grandma's Clothesline

Do you remember clothes hanging outside on the line?

Sheets blowing in the breeze.

Towels clipped with wooden clothespins.

Shirts lined up one after another.

And if you were a child running through those sheets...

you probably got told:

“Get out of my clean clothes!” 😂

Before dryers became common in many homes, laundry day took work.

Wash.

Rinse.

Wring.

Carry the heavy basket outside.

Hang every piece.

Watch the sky.

Then somebody yelled:

“IT'S GOING TO RAIN!”

And suddenly everybody moved faster than they had all day. 😂

But those clothes came inside smelling like sunshine and fresh air.

Sometimes the simplest memories become the ones we treasure most.

Ask an older family member today:

“What household chore was hardest when you were growing up?”

You might hear a story you've never heard before.

“Remember the days of old, consider the years of many generations...”— Deuteronomy 32:7 (KJV)

📜 TODAY IN HISTORY

🇺🇸 September 14, 1814 — “The Star-Spangled Banner” Is Written

Yesterday we talked about the bombardment of Fort McHenry beginning on September 13, 1814.

Through the night, Francis Scott Key watched and wondered whether the American flag would still be flying when morning came.

On the morning of September 14...

IT WAS STILL THERE.

Inspired by what he witnessed, Key wrote the poem originally titled “Defence of Fort M'Henry.”

Those words eventually became the lyrics to:

🇺🇸 “THE STAR-SPANGLED BANNER.”

Think about the picture.

Darkness.

Explosions.

Uncertainty.

A long night.

Then morning came...

And the flag was still standing.

Maybe somebody reading this needs that reminder today.

You've been through a long night too.

Maybe emotionally.

Financially.

Spiritually.

Physically.

But look at you.

YOU'RE STILL HERE.

And God isn't finished.

“...and having done all, to stand.”— Ephesians 6:13 (KJV)

Coloring isn't just for children anymore.

Adult coloring books have become a popular way to slow down, relax, and enjoy a little creativity.

And here's your reminder:

It's okay to do something simply because you enjoy it.

Not everything has to be productive.

Rest is not laziness.

Sometimes your mind needs quiet.

Don't Let One Bad Moment Become a Bad Day

Something goes wrong at 8:05 a.m.

And suddenly we declare:

“Well, this whole day is ruined!”

Hold on. 😂

You still have a whole lot of day left.

A rude person doesn't get ownership of your Monday.

A traffic jam doesn't get your peace.

A mistake doesn't define your day.

A difficult email doesn't control your attitude.

A disappointment doesn't cancel God's goodness.

That's another fiery dart.

The enemy would love to take one frustrating moment and let it spread through your entire day.

Don't let it.

PUT THE FIRE OUT.

Pray.

Take a breath.

Reset.

Keep going.

“This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.”— Psalm 118:24 (KJV)

Not:

“This is the perfect day.”

It says:

THIS IS THE DAY THE LORD MADE.

That's enough reason to find something good in it.

🛡️ FIVE SHIELD-OF-FAITH REMINDERS

1️⃣ Fear isn't always telling the truth.

Check it against God's Word.

2️⃣ One bad moment doesn't equal a bad life.

Reset.

3️⃣ Comparison is a fiery dart.

Don't let somebody else's blessing make you overlook yours.

4️⃣ You don't have to respond to every offense.

Sometimes the shield of faith looks like simply letting something bounce off.

5️⃣ Remember what God has already brought you through.

Yesterday's testimony can strengthen today's faith.

📝 TODAY'S CHALLENGE

🛡️ BUILD YOUR FAITH SHIELD

Take a piece of paper and write:

GOD HAS BEEN FAITHFUL WHEN...

Then list at least five times God brought you through something.

Maybe:

💜 A financial struggle

💜 A loss

💜 A difficult job situation

💜 A family crisis

💜 An unanswered question

💜 A season when you thought you'd never make it

Keep the list.

The next time fear says:

“What are you going to do?”

Answer:

“I DON'T KNOW YET—BUT I KNOW WHAT GOD HAS DONE BEFORE.”

That's faith.

🙏 TODAY'S PRAYER

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for this Monday morning.

Thank You for another week.

Thank You for another opportunity to serve You, love people, and grow closer to You.

Lord, today we take up the shield of faith.

When fiery darts of fear come...

Help us raise our shield.

When doubt comes...

Remind us of Your faithfulness.

When temptation comes...

Give us strength to turn away.

When discouragement comes...

Remind us that our story isn't finished.

When comparison comes...

Help us count our own blessings.

When someone hurts us...

Keep offense from setting our hearts on fire.

Lord, protect our minds.

Guard our hearts.

Guide our words.

Direct our steps.

Bless our families.

Protect our children and grandchildren.

Strengthen marriages.

Provide for those struggling financially.

Comfort those grieving.

Bring healing according to Your will.

Bless those beginning another workweek.

Give strength to caregivers.

Protect first responders.

Encourage teachers.

Guide students.

Strengthen pastors and churches.

And Lord, help us remember:

We don't fight alone.

You are our refuge.

Our fortress.

Our strength.

Our defender.

And today we choose faith over fear.

In Jesus' precious name,

Amen.

Remember what God has done.

Remember what God has promised.

Remember who God is.

And say:

“I WILL TRUST GOD WITH THIS TOO.”

“What time I am afraid, I will trust in thee.”— Psalm 56:3 (KJV)

That's faith.

Not never being afraid.

TRUSTING GOD WHEN YOU ARE.
