Stop Waiting for Perfect—Give God Something to Work With

📖 Today’s Scripture

"For who hath despised the day of small things?"— Zechariah 4:10 (KJV)

Good Tuesday morning, authors! 💜📚

How many books are sitting unwritten because someone is waiting until they can write them perfectly?

Maybe you've rewritten the first paragraph fifteen times.

Maybe you keep changing the title.

Maybe you've spent weeks thinking about the cover when the manuscript isn't finished.

Maybe you have an idea you love, but every time you sit down to write, you immediately begin criticizing your own words.

“That doesn't sound good enough.”

Delete.

Write again.

Delete.

Write again.

And two hours later...

You have three sentences and a headache. 😊

Author, today's message is simple:

Stop expecting your beginning to look like somebody else's finished product.

Your first draft doesn't need to be perfect.

It needs to exist.

🌿 Small Beginnings Still Matter

Zechariah asks:

"For who hath despised the day of small things?"

We often want the big moment.

The finished manuscript.

The beautiful cover.

The box of books arriving.

The launch announcement.

The first sale.

But every finished book began much smaller than that.

It began with an idea.

Then a sentence.

Then another.

Then a page.

Then a chapter.

Don't despise the little beginning because you can't see the finished book yet.

God often develops big things through small acts of faithfulness.

💜 Your First Draft Is Allowed to Need Work

Can I give you permission today?

Write something that needs editing.

That's what editing is for!

Your first draft is not the finished book.

You can:

✍️ Rewrite sentences.

📝 Move paragraphs.

📖 Add chapters.

✂️ Remove sections.

💡 Change ideas.

🎨 Rename characters.

🔄 Rearrange the entire thing if necessary.

But you cannot edit a blank page.

Sometimes perfectionism disguises itself as excellence.

There is a difference.

Excellence says:"I'll give this my best and continue improving it."

Perfectionism says:"If I can't do it perfectly, I won't do it at all."

One helps you grow.

The other keeps you stuck.

✍️ Don't Edit Every Sentence While You're Trying to Create It

There is a time to write.

And there is a time to edit.

Trying to do both at the exact same moment can make writing painfully slow.

When you're drafting, allow the story to breathe.

Get the idea onto the page.

You may discover the perfect sentence later.

You may even discover the entire chapter belongs somewhere else.

That's okay.

First, create. Then refine.

Let yourself be a writer before asking yourself to become the editor.

🌸 God Can Grow What You're Willing to Begin

Sometimes we pray:

“Lord, bless my book.”

And God may be saying:

“Write it.”

We want Him to bless the finished dream while we're afraid to begin the unfinished work.

Prayer matters.

Seeking God matters.

But faith also moves.

Open the notebook.

Start the document.

Write the paragraph.

Learn what you don't know.

Ask for help.

Make mistakes.

Improve.

Keep going.

Give God your willingness, not your perfection.

💜 Don't Let Fear Hide Behind Perfectionism

Sometimes the real issue isn't perfection.

It's fear.

Fear of criticism.

Fear that nobody will buy the book.

Fear someone will find a mistake.

Fear we'll discover we're not as good as we hoped.

Fear of putting something personal into the world.

So we keep polishing...

and polishing...

and polishing...

because as long as the book isn't finished, nobody can judge it.

But eventually faith requires courage.

There comes a point when we have to say:

“I've prayed. I've written. I've edited. I've done my best. Now I'm going to move forward.”

🙏 Tuesday Author Prayer

Heavenly Father,

Thank You for every gift, idea, testimony, and story You've placed within us.

Forgive us when fear and perfectionism keep us from using those gifts.

Help us pursue excellence without becoming paralyzed by the desire to make everything perfect.

Give us courage to begin small.

Help us write the first draft without constantly judging ourselves.

Give us wisdom when it's time to revise.

Bring trustworthy people into our lives who can help us improve.

And remind us that our worth isn't determined by whether every sentence is flawless.

We give You our willingness, our effort, our creativity, and our words.

Use them however You desire.

In Jesus' precious name,

Amen.

✍️ TODAY'S AUTHOR CHALLENGE

WRITE THE IMPERFECT PAGE

Today we're going to do something that may make the perfectionists among us uncomfortable. 😊

Set a timer for 20 minutes.

Then write.

And you are NOT allowed to delete anything until the timer ends!

Don't fix every sentence.

Don't stop because you can't think of the perfect word.

If you get stuck, write:

“I'll fix this later.”

Then continue.

When the timer ends, look at what you accomplished.

It may need editing.

Good!

Now you have something to edit.

Yesterday there was a blank page.

Today there are words.

That's progress.

That's part of the journey.

Today, give yourself permission to write something imperfect.

Because an imperfect page can become a beautiful chapter.

A beautiful chapter can become a finished manuscript.

And a finished manuscript can become the book someone has been waiting to read. 💜📖✍️
