Not Everyone Has to Understand Your Story
📖 Today’s Scripture
"For do I now persuade men, or God? or do I seek to please men? for if I yet pleased men, I should not be the servant of Christ."— Galatians 1:10 (KJV)
Good Saturday morning, authors! 💜📖✍️
There comes a point in almost every writer’s journey when somebody doesn’t understand.
They may not understand why you spend hours writing.
They may question why you want to publish a book.
They may not like your subject.
They may criticize your style.
They may tell you there are already too many books like yours.
And sometimes the hardest words come from people whose encouragement we wanted the most.
If you’re not careful, someone else’s opinion can cause you to put down a pen that God told you to pick up.
Today I want to remind you:
Not everyone has to understand your assignment in order for you to obey it.
🌿 Listen to Wisdom—But Don’t Live for Approval
There is a difference between receiving wise correction and allowing criticism to control you.
Good authors need feedback.
We need editors.
We need proofreaders.
We need people willing to tell us when something isn’t clear.
We need to remain teachable.
But being teachable doesn’t mean allowing every opinion to determine your direction.
Ask yourself:
Is this correction helping me become a better writer?
Is it truthful?
Is it coming from someone whose wisdom I trust?
Does it align with God’s Word and the purpose He has placed upon my heart?
Receive what helps you grow.
Pray about what you’re unsure of.
And don’t carry words God never asked you to carry.
💜 You Cannot Write for Everyone
This is something every author eventually has to accept:
Your book will not be for everybody.
And that’s okay.
Some people love mysteries.
Others love devotionals.
Some enjoy romance.
Others want history, biographies, children’s stories, poetry, or Bible studies.
A book that deeply touches one reader may not interest another.
That doesn’t automatically mean the book failed.
Instead of trying to write something everybody will love, ask:
“Who am I called to serve through these words?”
Write faithfully for them.
✍️ Don’t Let One Negative Voice Become Louder Than Your Calling
Imagine receiving ten encouraging comments and one critical comment.
Which one do we tend to remember?
The criticism.
We can replay it all day.
Suddenly ten people saying, “Keep going!” become quieter than one person saying, “I don’t like it.”
Author, be careful.
Constructive criticism can improve your writing.
But destructive criticism can steal your confidence if you allow it.
Learn the difference.
You can consider someone’s opinion without allowing it to become your identity.
A bad review doesn’t make you a bad author.
A rejected manuscript doesn’t mean you should stop writing.
A disappointing sales month doesn’t mean your book has no value.
And someone failing to understand your vision doesn’t mean God didn’t give it to you.
🌸 Stay Humble Enough to Learn and Brave Enough to Continue
We need both.
Humility says:“I can improve.”
Courage says:“I’m not quitting.”
Wisdom says:“I’ll listen carefully.”
Faith says:“God gets the final word.”
That is the balance I want us to develop as authors.
We don’t want to become so sensitive that correction destroys us.
But we also don’t want to become so prideful that nobody can teach us anything.
Stay teachable without becoming easily discouraged.

Heavenly Father,
Thank You for every story, testimony, lesson, and creative idea You have entrusted to us.
Give us wisdom when others offer advice.
Help us recognize correction that can make us better, and protect our hearts from words intended only to discourage.
Keep us humble enough to learn and courageous enough to continue.
Help us never make popularity our purpose or approval our identity.
May we seek first to honor You.
Guide our words, our decisions, and our publishing journeys.
And when discouragement comes, remind us why we began.
In Jesus’ precious name,
Amen.
✍️ Today’s Author Challenge
Turn Criticism Into Growth
Think about one piece of feedback you’ve received about your writing.
Ask yourself:
1. Is there something useful I can learn from it?
2. Is there something I need to change?
3. Is there something I simply need to release?
Then take one positive action.
📝 Make the correction.
📖 Rewrite the paragraph.
✍️ Improve the chapter.
🙏 Pray about the criticism.
💜 Or simply say:
“I’ve learned what I can from this, and now I’m moving forward.”
Then write for 20 minutes.
Don’t let criticism have the final word.
